for all that uc gundam spends a lot of time on how evil cyber newtype development is, it really does work. it's just that cyber newtypes can't possibly beat stronger natural newtypes in gundams. of course, no one except bright expects gundam protagonists to show up and muck about all these super weapons that run on cruelty even though that happens every time.

r-reco should have spent more time on the story than on fights, sure. that's probably true for most gundam shows. however, the many grunt and one-off mechs in g-reco were excellent so it wasn't all bad.

sayla definitely had the capability to fill char's role of mysterious subversive ace pilot, but i'm not sure what possible circumstances would actually make her do so. she never really gave a poo poo about any of the stuff that drove char.

if sayla had started piloting in space instead of after the white base came to earth she probably would have left amuro in the dust. she took to it crazy fast and started developing newtype abilities almost immediately after they returned to space.

when i was watching that show i thought the same about why the side with limited supplies and support went with the convoluted and delicate victory. but nah, uso just kept getting enough parts to make a dozen gundams which he used as consumable weapons.

it was really funny how at the end there weren't really any second tier good guys left standing to fight alongside allenby. so, they pulled out the sinister blind assassin as a newly valiant heroic figure. the guy who compensated for his blindness with hearing. in space. piloting the mandala gundam, which is a serious contender for goofiest gundam in the show which is saying an awful lot. even better, the mermaid gundam pilot was a good guy who only had to retire because his gundam broke down. also, they pumped out a bunch of mermaid gundams in a background shot. he did not return for the final battle.
