The new YouTube is garbage all around, but the thing that drives me most crazy is that it doesn't have navigation noises.

Does it make navigation sounds again yet?

You aren't supposed to get 4K streams from Movies Anywhere code redemption. Only movies purchased directly from Apple were supposed to get free 4K upgrades. You probably just somehow got them when you weren't supposed to and they took them away from you.

This isn't 100% true. If it was a 4k code to begin with it should update.

The steam store exists fully on the steam app already on iPhone, though. Do they get a cut of that?

Ummmm. No it doesn’t. It never has, and if it ever did it would kind of be big news.

While it doesn't have full integration stuff on there still comes up with searches, I think. It doesn't let you track it, add to up next, etc. though.

I want to watch movies and view pictures and gifs I have on a hard drive. The HDD is connected to my PC by USB.

What is the best way to watch your own movies AND see pictures on an AppleTV nowadays?

I currently have my PC sharing the HDD over my network via SMB which is accessed via Infuse on my devices-- didn't need Pro. It works but it's pretty jank and you can't see pictures.

I was thinking it would be a good idea to shove all my poo poo into a cloud storage option somehow, but since some of the things on there are homemade porn I'd be violating various TOS rules, even if they go unenforced.

So PS4 controllers work now. But Steam Link requires you setup a controller in the app. But the Apple TV already reads inputs from the controller as soon as you sync it. So you literally can't set it up because when it tells you to setup the B button, O on the PS4 app, it reads that as you pressing what TV OS has mapped as the menu button on the controller. So it takes you back. Great job, guys, everyone involved really knocked this one out of the park.

Are you talking about the beta?

Yeah. The controller works flawlessly on TV OS itself, for navigating menus, etc. But it's literally impossible to set it up in the Steam app. The hosed up thing is that Steam Link reads that it's a dualshock, so like... why do I have to tell it which buttons are which to begin with, if it knows it's a PS4 controller?

If you're using a developer beta that generally means you're getting the OS at the same time Valve is.

It’s a public beta.

Seriously, though, if you're seeing bugs, particularly recurring ones, REPORT THEM. That is the entire point of releasing public betas.

I’ve obviously done this. But the fact that this wasn’t something someone noticed the first day they had this available to them on Valves side is still ridiculous. Add to that the fact that it reads perfectly on the actual beta firmware and it’s even dumber.

I just thought it was a dumb funny glitch. But even more funny is everyone here jumping to defend Valve against someone calling a dumb glitch dumb on the internet.

Valve are a terrible, incompetent company. They make infinity money from Steam and yet haven't appreciably updated the client in years. The iOS app is still a basic web view that doesn't support the iPhone X resolution. It's silly to complain about bugs in a beta, but it's equally silly to assume Valve - of all companies - will actually fix it.

This. If this is actually fixed by the time it's out of beta then yes, it was a dumb beta thing. But the single intern who's in charge of this app probably isn't even thinking about it in between making DOTA hats, so I really, really doubt it's getting fixed.

If it works anything like iTunes family sharing (or is part of that) then it's not going to be useful for anyone but literal families, like parents with children.

Apple music family stuff works just fine with friend groups.

It’s not a separate option. It’s part of the Aerial screensavers. It took a few days and changing my update frequency to daily to get them to show up.

Is there a way to choose which screensaver you're using?

Anyone know the difference between English and English CC subtitles on Apple TV+ shows? Seems like same content but different fonts for some reason.

Closed captions usually provide written out noises and music cues. Basically they're made with the assumption the viewer cannot hear the audio, while subtitles assume the audio can be heard but you might need help with the dialogue for whatever reason.

So subtitle and closed caption/cc isn’t the same word for the same thing? Huh, didn’t know that.

Closed captions are for the hard of hearing, subtitles are for movies that have absolutely poo poo audio mixing where the dialogue is way softer than the sound effects so you gotta turn it way down to not blow out your speakers every time something happens.

Gf got me into subtitles. I was surprised how much dialog I missed in some of my favorite movies.

Audio mixing is poo poo for sure. Sometimes I wonder why they even add a line that’s said off-screen under someone’s breath. But movies gotta make the action loud!

It's gotten better but during the earlier days of blu-ray it seems like they were just putting the uncompressed theatrical mixes onto stuff, not realizing most people don't have a setup that can play that and have it sound good, and even those who do might not be able to play poo poo that loud. Dialogue should always be louder than music and sound effects when both are happening at once on home releases, as far as I'm concerned.
