Isn't "all of my friends should be friends with each other" the first entry in that old essay about nerd fallacies about friendship? You're taking it like three deranged steps further with "all of the people who pretend to have the same friends by listening to a podcast should be friends with that podcast's friends"

Arf is a known troll. Not sure if anyone remembers, but he was disrespectful to the regulars of various fat-mocking GBS threads, and he failed to show respect to the Goons who made an app that plays The Crazy Frog theme whenever someone dies on Mt. Everest. For years he has failed to treat the kind of threads where people post about bitcoins and how huge the xbox is, with the gravitas that they deserve.

Now he has gone completely off the rails, and he is saying things like "Floppy Drive Marcus"; he needs to be stopped.

Can you please expand on this for people that are curious but don’t want to watch a whole documentary?

Game Theory is based on the idea that everyone is suspicious and untrustworthy and will betray and harm each other whenever it benefits them or even just because they feel like it. Like most economics it doesn't hold up to actual double-blind scientific testing and isn't real science, instead it was largely just Nash filtering his undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia through little games he and his peers would play together and declaring anyone who didn't fit into his expected outcome as an unfit test subject. This model of humans being madmen that would turn on each other in an instant was basically the cornerstone of all post-WWII social policy and Cold War military strategy and led to the hostile isolated hellscape we currently inhabit.

Adam Curtis is good and all his docs are worth watching IMHO.

Freakonomics may legitimately be one of the most psychically poisonous works of the 21st century, it's made so many people who ought to know better think economics has any value.

There are so many openly gay comic people that struggle to get work, hiring a straight white guy to make a comic about the gay experience in America is some major cringe even before you factor in him having Stonewall all be white cis men.

Yeah man, maybe this medieval society should’ve thought of that.

This is why we're blessed to live in the days of fandom wikis where people who would spend their lives trying rules-lawyer the creator of the universe can instead squabble over whether Blade Runner takes place in the Fallout universe.

Then Lowtax posted or tweeted like sa should be more like kiwifarms, over there when they dox someone they make funny photoshops like this [posts terrible photoshop] hey guys seriously why doesn't SA make funny photoshops anymore etc.

that should be quoted at the beginning of this chapter in a book written about somethingawful

Man someone from Portal of Evil eulogizing all this is so fitting.

I was really confused how that thread spanned 16 years with 3 pages. I didnt even know we had a dedicated review forum.

The Film Dump and Blockbuster Video are both longstanding monuments to the fact that the people who complain about Cinema Discusso aren't actually all that interested in posting about movies outside of doing so in opposition to them.

Video games existed, but none of the rest of this was a thing then. Maybe I’ve forgotten how annoying they were in the intervening decades

If you're an Old I can get the confusion, back in the 70s and 80s "nerd" usually referred to someone who actually was smart and had an interest in useful and lucrative fields like electrical engineering and computer programming but was awkward or dressed weird. But Revenge of the Nerds gave way to Comic Book Guy in the 90s and much like how Radio Shack went from selling actual electrical components to selling toys and cell phones the word "nerd" is now mostly associated with people who think consuming electronic entertainment or esoteric hobbies means you're smart.

I meant 2007, stupid autocorrect. Seeing people go from dismissing T&E as monkey cheese horseshit to the modern community of people slapping their knees at like a decade of On Cinema deep lore continuing to pay dividends and appreciating what fantastic satire their work is makes for a great ride.

That part might almost provoke some existential crises now.

My current friend circle has multiple people in their early- to mid-20s for whom My Little Pony remixes were their version of All Your Base or YTMND in terms of the thing that got them into internet meme culture and which they are now nostalgic for. Also universally they all have traumatic experiences with being in a pony Facebook group or fan site and having adults send them porn or try to sexually roleplay with them because they were too young and naive to understand that it was one of those communities and they were intruding on adult spaces because they only saw the cartoon horses from a show meant for kids and assumed it was for them.
