trapped mouse posted:Right. It mostly happened in the 60s with the Kennedy (D) and Johnson (D, who doesn't get enough credit) administrations supporting civil rights. Johnson was even from the south, but even before he was the vice president he was in favor of civil rights. Nixon (R) realized he could win over southern states by being just racist enough, and that's the super, super oversimplified version. It's a pretty interesting subject. Prester Jane (formerly Prestor John) has a thread on authoritarians like sovereign citizens, fundamentalist Christians, and other nuts who are common in right-wing circles. One of the important things to take away from the discussion is that while the Democrats cut ties with left-wing radicals like anarchists around the 60s, the Republicans instead tried to court the right-wing radicals for votes (especially Nixon and after). This resulted in the current dynamic where the GOP has gradually become more and more controlled by the crazier side of conservatism like the Tea Party until we've finally reached the point where an openly racist fascist is the current front runner for the Republicans. The left-wing radicals weren't given the room to gain power like the right-wing ones, which is why you don't hear anything about an open Stalinist courting votes at the DNC. This is why very old school Republicans like Eisenhower or John Lindsay (former mayor of NYC through the 60s and 70s) are downright moderate compared to the current cream of the crop. Lindsay was even supportive of increasing the number of black-owned businesses in Harlem, something you'd never imagine any of the GOP presidential candidates trying to do.

I mentioned it in the food thread I think but a while back I was in a restaurant and they let a family bring their service pug in and walk all over the table they were sitting at. It didn't act very well trained so I kind of doubt it was a service animal. There's still debate and controversy over whether "emotional support animals" count as legitimate service animals or if you need to have a "real disability" to have one.

Child support is definitely one of those grey areas where a lot of people (feminists included) think that shady poo poo goes on with it. The most prominent being that courts tend to have an inherent bias toward mothers over fathers in terms of custody and demanding child support payments.

pastor of muppets posted:My brother-in-law has officially gone from far-left Berniebro to pro-Trump redneck in less than six months. I got curious and decided to do the math. The United States had 3.8 murders per 100,000 people (12,253 total), putting them at 121 out of 216 on the list (though this is a bit deceptive as the bottom half of the list has increasingly smaller differences, to the point where countries 191 and 204 have a difference of only 0.1 murders while the difference between 1 and 2 is 30.6 murders). Murder rates for cities: Detroit: 43.5 (298) Chicago: 15.1 (460) Washington, DC: 15.9 (105) New Orleans: 39.6 (150) That's a total of 1,013 murders in 2014 between all four cities. Eliminating those cities entirely from the list would bring the US murder total to roughly 11,240 (I had to use 2013 numbers for the national murder rate compared to 2014 for the individual cities). US population in 2013 was 316.5 million, divide by 100,000 to get 3,165. That's a rate of 3.5 murders per 100,000, which would bring us to....#128 on the list. What's impressive is that even the "third in murders" part that makes the US look awful is made up entirely for the picture. Literally every part of that is fictional.

Krispy Kareem posted:Those numbers are a little misleading also because even in a hell-hole like Chicago, most of the city is relatively safe. So saying there are 15 murders per 100k people - while technically correct, is still not a great indicator of the crime rate. It's probably 1 or 2 murders per 100k for the 50% of people who live in nice areas and 30 per 100k in poor neighborhoods. In general, even the national number is misleading. The United States is a really loving huge country with wildly disparate regions, to the point where sometimes it's hard to even think of it as a single nation except by the unusual number of American flags everywhere. If I remember correctly, the majority of murders in the United States are committed in a relatively small handful of urban areas; as that math showed, those 4 cities alone held nearly 10% of all murders.

What the guy did was terrible sure but I can't help but feel like it all could have been avoided if the guy got the help he needed. Instead of hanging around other weirdos that encouraged him to get worse how different would it have been if he was around people that said "hey dude you need to be in therapy and we'll help you get better, OK?" If you want to argue that pedophilia is a mental illness, then technically every pedophile is mentally ill. Though that gets into some rather uncomfortable implications about exactly what gets classified as a mental illness (is a foot fetish a mental illness, or does it only count if it hurts kids?). The sad part is that there's actually plenty of pedophiles who are ashamed of it and resisting the urge because they know it's harmful, but it's virtually impossible for them to get help because even admitting the attraction results in them immediately becoming a pariah and anyone who tries to help them in ways other than immediate imprisonment and watch lists gets accused of being a kiddy diddler themselves.
