My concern with security management by third parties is not so much that they're hackable, but that what recourse do you have when you do end up compromised. Who licenses/bonds/audits password management firms? (Arguably the same framework as banks or attorneys would work, but what government is going to take up the fight to make evidence collection harder.) Do you even have any option other than lopsided arbitration and having to do the same security cleanup as you would with a local/bulk-storage database?Geektox posted:As far as LastPass vs. KeePass vs. 1Password goes, as long as my passwords aren't compromised I personally really don't care much if they get attacked. Dropbox has been subject to breaches before so if that's the concern then why even have your password vault in the cloud at all? The password vault isn't plaintext (not even its metadata is, beyond filesystem minima) and can be given any extension without affecting its readability. Also at least for KeePass you can use an additional file (labeled 'private key' but it can be anything, and shared directly/locally rather than through the cloud or it defeats the purpose) in the encryption process. Cloud storage is just a bag-man. dont be mean to me fucked around with this message at 22:00 on Nov 16, 2015 |

Is there a calculator for Android devices that are not on Marshmallow that doesn't suck? The default calculator for Marshmallow Nexuses actually sort of qualifies, because they finally added back the degree-mode and it can deal with calculations with many significant figures (for example, actually returning 720 instead of 0 when fed with (1015+7.2-1015)*100). I'm sure it falls down in other places, but even that puts it ahead of most default calculators. It can be sideloaded onto other Marshmallow phones, which is goodish (put it on the Play Store already Google), but Lollipop stuff not so much. EDIT: On that note, if any of you know of a good place to find formulas that shouldn't break calculators but frequently do it'd be much appreciated. dont be mean to me fucked around with this message at 00:04 on Dec 30, 2015 |

Three Olives posted:I'm I the only one that vastly prefers the Google Now launcher over Nova and Launcher Pro? It felt like both offered way, way too much customization options that I would have to endlessly dick with to get it to my liking where Google Now is basically featureless but clean and easy to use. I don't know if I'd call it a vast preference, but at some point yeah messing with folders and margins and animations and stuff gets real old (I used Nova for two years), and you realize that Google's actually kinda sorta got a hang of this.

NOVA LAUNCHER (Prime): Out of curiosity, is there a way to make groups appear in-line in the app drawer, rather than in folders or tabs? Yes, I know you can rename things to fake it, but A) if I didn't care about how things looked I would have stuck with Google's launcher, B) it cuts into the one line caption for your drawer icons, and C) it only lasts until the app is updated. dont be mean to me fucked around with this message at 06:07 on Mar 13, 2016 |

All I need is something simple to sync occasional shorts notes and lists between my Windows desktop and some Android gadgets. I'm not in a power user scenario here. I don't mind buying an app if needed, but I'll be damned if I'm giving Evernote 8 bucks every month. Google Keep and Microsoft OneNote are the obvious ones; both have the advantage of being included in free omnibus accounts you probably already have.

Google Play Newsstand has been around for a while and Google went back and brought their old news and weather thingy into this century. I'm not going to say Never Don't Google, but they're pretty good at giving people plenty of reasons to use their stuff and few reasons to stop using their stuff.

But we won't care about RCS when the stars have gone out GutBomb posted:WebOS (palm pre) had it right in my opinion. It integrated all of the available IM platforms along with SMS and MMS into its messaging application and just treated them all the same. It prioritized the platform where the message recipient was marked as available at the time. A modern implementation of something like that would be awesome and then it wouldn't matter what anyone was using, it would all just appear there. The first two paragraphs are pretty much my thoughts on it too. Blackberry needs to be done, though.

Today I learned that you can't restore a phone backup in the Android first-run wizard without restoring the corrupt system settings that caused you to have to wipe in the first place, and if you set up as a new device you lose your entire Google Drive backup for the device. Unless I'm blind or something, there needs to be a way to just restore app data, not the phone configuration. dont be mean to me fucked around with this message at 04:59 on Sep 30, 2016 |

There's also a Chrome extension, and ... well, there's no point suggesting a Chrome app because Google's pulling apps off of Chrome for general-purpose computers soon.

GIFs are one of the few things around these days that isn't hardware-accelerated. The general-purpose CPU in your phone, which is more of a processor of last resort with as many specialist processors a typical phone has in 2016, has to put full power to running the GIF. A full-3D or full-vector or UHD-video live wallpaper might actually be less intensive on your battery.

I use FF on all my PCs and wouldn't mind getting away from Google a bit more on my phone (I know, I know, I'm using Android on a Google Pixel phone). It works well enough for things I still actually use the Web directly for on smartphones, but admittedly that's not much of my phone usage profile. I suppose it's more about its capacity for containment than its direct utility or performance for me.
