It's not the nicest to look at, but I use the SMB/FTP functions for transferring stuff from my server and it works well. It has every feature I've ever needed including root functions. I also like how you can customize the toolbar to hide unused features. The non-ad version was $3 I think.

Don't use anything by Cheetah unless you enjoy China knowing all of your poo poo.

Signal is arguably the best and safest of the group, but telegram is the most popular and easiest to use. Threema has a really nice intuitive method of confirming identities, but it's the only closed source app among them.

Swipe for Facebook has a dumb name but is a much better wrapper app than Metal. So much better, in fact, that the Metal guy stole a bunch of code from Swipe.

It also has a fix to get around the forced Messenger thing.
