Now-former President Wing abolished the presidency while we were holding the election. A perfect end to a great thread. Sorry Debs, you were just too late.

The path was too dark Honestly, though, looking through presidential history has really contextualized the Trump for me. All this has happened before. I thought Hilary would crush him like Nixon crushed George McGovern, but it turns out she was ----that super corrupt/powerful senator from the late 1800s. Blane? Clay?

Well theoretically the electoral college could turn the other way if they exert their own personal judgement towards a more sane option, but historically unfaithful electors haven't mattered much (except maybe in 1876? It's a little ambiguous.) Kind of weird that the original purpose of the system, voting for people who you think are reliable enough to choose the president because it's hard to keep track of national politics in the 18th century, is mostly paved over leaving nothing but a relic that skews votes weirdly.

"I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we begin by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes." When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty-to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." -Abraham Lincoln Post relevant historical quote from American History ITT

"In its history, an enormous number of people have contended for high office. While some of these individuals have attractive platforms, strong managerial experience, and a network of backers, others have not. In certain elections, picking a candidate might entail sacrifices, either in policy or experience. The Prohibition Party, for example, once campaigned on a platform of civil rights, women’s suffrage, child labor laws, and the national prohibition of alcohol. Other parties might make wild promises, but provide no realistic way of achieving those ends. " "...I am consumed by self-loathing..." -QuidProQuid

"Not so long ago men stood in marvel and awe at the cities, the buildings, the schools, the autobahns that the government of Hitler's Germany had built -- just as centuries before they stood in wonder of Rome's building -- but it could not stand, for the system that built it had rotted the souls of the builders. And, in turn, rotted the foundation of what God meant that men should be. Today that same system on an international scale is sweeping the world. It is the "changing world" of which we are told. It is called "new" and "liberal". It is as old as the oldest dictator. It is degenerate and decadent. As the national racism of Hitler's Germany persecuted a national minority to the whim of a national majority, so the international racism of the liberals seek to persecute the international white minority to the whim of the international colored majority, so that we are footballed about according to the favor of the Afro-Asian bloc." --George Wallace, 1963

"Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide." --Abraham Lincoln
