Lord Koth posted:For the other side of the coin, you occasionally had instances where captains would defy orders in order to render aid. After the Second Battle of the Java Sea, LCDR Shunsaku Kudo onboard IJN destroyer Ikazuchi, along with its division mate Inazuma, quietly made the decision to defy the significant risk of submarine attack in order to render aid to the survivors of USS Pope, HMS Encounter and HMS Exeter, rescuing hundreds of men out of the water. Might've been more humane to let them drown than be POWs

The Marines were a distraction that successfully baited the Japanese into sending their carrier fleets. Extraction was never part of the plan.

They were specifically not used against Germany due to fears of reverse engineering. That changed later in the war but it was strictly an anti-Japanese weapon / anti V1* weapon at first. *inside England so doesn't count e: Did a quick wiki and the first time VT fuses were used in a non-naval or non anti-air capacity was the Battle of the Bulge, where it decimated German troops in the open. Imagine how bad that would've been for the 101 if the Germans had that tech. 3 DONG HORSE fucked around with this message at 23:36 on Jan 5, 2018 |

The difference is that unlike carrier ops, you need to deal with strat bombing practically every day. If you changed Japanese logistics capability and gave them a unified command structure, I think they would've lost in 1946 instead. Add more stuff like the above post mentions and maybe 1947 but I don't see a win anywhere. You just can't beat a nation that can outproduce the entire world on its own. The US had loving ice cream machines on their ships!

Well, maybe not as bad as the Civil War but that's kind of cheating.

So, what are everyone's thoughts on auto sub ops? I always leave that on (grabbing subs as I need them for specific areas), but I really have no idea how (in)effective that function is. I am planning on starting a new game tonight.

Thank you for the comments on sub ops. I started the game with it off. You guys are right - it isn't that much more effort than a normal setup.

Docked ships provid 50% of their AA so maybe CVs can provide a little bit of CAP? Need someone more familiar with the game to confirm. I've never been in a situation where I've had CVs under repair at a port under attack.

2/1942 and I'm struggling to escort anything. A brutal December 7th combined with an aggressive defense in the DEI that backfired spectacularly led to a severe shortage of ASW. The Kido Butai decided to cruise through and wreck EVERYTHING. The oceans are scary and I am afraid of everything right now. This is way more fun than Sir Robin though. 3 DONG HORSE fucked around with this message at 00:03 on Feb 23, 2018 |
