So I have to ask: were those videos softcore/"Cinemax" or fully-fledged porno films? (Guessing the latter based on the box graphics.)

Full on porn. We did have a section that was Russ Myers movies, Fritz the Cat, and basic soft core porn. However, thanks to the 80s and 90s, the horror and action section had plenty of B movies that had lots of nudity and sex. Lots of women in prison movies for some reason.

I used to have an ancient VCR that had these long mechanical lever buttons. The tape door opened toward the top - pop the tape in and push the top closed again.
It worked and never broke a tape.

Something like this:

Ahh the old top loaders. Some had fancy wired remotes but the cords were only 8 inches long.

I have a HUGE MP3 collection that started in 1997 and has been added to using newsgroups, Napster, Kazza, D++, eMule, FTP, torrents, etc.

Now I hardly listen to them because it's easier to just pay $10 a month for Google Music or Spotify. No more loading up my phone and trying to figure out what music I may be in the mood for. What really did it for me is the fact that I can play a certain song or full album of my choosing. LastFM and Pandora never let you do that, at least in the past.

I know this does not benefit the artist because they get paid next to nothing for streaming but I'm also not pirating anymore.

While we are kinda on subject, why do radio stations still pretend to take requests? Do you really think we believe that someone in TYOOL 2016 would make an actual phone call and ask them to play the same AC/DC song that's on a 48 hour rotation?

You can also do a double-sided DVD that you have to flip over

My copy of Goodfellas was like this. You had to flip it right as Karen was ringing all the apartments saying that Janice Rossi was a whore.

I remember people talking about how concert DVDs would allow you to change angles so if you just wanted to watch the bass player the entire time, you could.

I think The Matrix had this thing where a white rabbit would appear on screen and would trigger producer commentary or something if you click it.

LOST did this with the commentary tracks. The plane blew up and then you could push a button to see a small featurette on filming the scene.

X-Files season 1 did this in a few episodes too.

Cliff Stoll is actually a pretty smart guy and The Cuckcoo's Egg is an excellent read. Of you could watch the Nova episode about it.

If they made Windows free for users but cost money for Corporations/OEMs, I could see them sell computers with a tiny linux client installed that downloads and then installs Windows for you to save 20 dollars or whatever.

You can do this with Citrix. Just have a "blank" PC that has the Citrix client installed and you can stream the Windows OS to the PC. Once the user logs out their instance is deleted. Quite handy to keep malware and viruses from getting into your network and to keep users from installing unauthorized software. Handy too if you don't want to push an program update's MSI to 5.000 desktops. Just update once OS image and go.

There was a time in the early 80s when my mom would give me $5 and drop me off at the mall arcade while she went shopping. This was always my favorite.

I had one in 2002 or '03. It was Iomega's attempt to regain market share because no one was using Zip, or any other, kinds of discs.

I used a Zip drive (parallel port) all the time and never had the click of death. I got my first one in '96 or '97 and continued to use them up until 2011. I had an old file server that had an internal zip drive and I just used that to backup documents. That server eventually died and so I just use dropbox and google drive now.

From '97 to '99 I did IT stuff for a place that made keychains and similar promotional items. Our art department used Zip disks all the time because it was the only medium available that let you ship large Illustrator, Quark, of Photoshop files. We did have an FTP server setup but this was in the dial up days and no one had time to wait for the upload/download times.

In addition to the Jaz drive (1GB), Iomega also had the Ditto drive which allowed you to backup at much as 2GB to tape.

I posted this in another thread but I think if fits here.

Does anyone remember ColdFusion?

http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion-family.html

It's a markup language that also gave you scripting abilities to interact with databases. Really early versions of Facebook used this and I've also seen quite a few US government offices develop with it.

It's still around but other than updating legacy systems I don't think it's that big anymore. It was developed by a guy on the east cost and was bought out by Macromedia in 2001 and then came under Adobe when they bought them out.

I am obligated to develop primarily in ColdFusion because I work with someone who swears by it and thinks anything newer is just me being a hipster.

Just this past new year I had to write a python credit-card-charge runner because (his version of) CF's cryptography is so old Stripe retired it on the 1st, rendering our existing CF-based client useless. The new solution may be the foot in the door I need to get us to consider stacks that have matured within the last five years.

I was quite active in the CF community back in '00--'02 (In fact I got all my 9/11 updates via a CF user group listserv in real time) and yeah, some of them are quite BOFH types. Has this co-worker ever dropped the name Ben Forta? He's like the Steve Jobs of CF, or at least was back in the day.

Not bad really. $55 US for a boxed PowerJet

The complete DVDs are on Amazon for around $35. However I don't think the light guy would work on anything other than an old CRT TV
