What are the chances that decrypting a 45 gig preload is gonna take longer than just downloading it once it's unlocked?

Oh totally. One of the perverse downsides of downloading 17 mb/s is that it almost always takes longer to decrypt the game than it does to download it!

This is textbook firstworldproblems though.

Besides the Long War Thin Man.gif I hope that there is footage of xcom blowing up buildings and collaborators.

Can Iron Rose's easier LW mods be installed on an existing campaign or would I have to restart? I'm using a release version of LW.

They're all tested and compatible for LW's final release, and can be installed anytime you like. Both the patcherGUI mods and the easier long war DCG. Doesn't have to be before or after a campaign, though changes will of course not be retroactive. Fortunately most of the changes don't need to be retroactive, the only big thing I did that won't transfer is I increased the minimum mobility a soldier could have by 1, but that triggers on recruitment so only new soldiers will benefit.

define "old laptop"

Because I wouldn't want to run EW on anything less than Haswell integrated graphics. Xcom 2 will probably want a discrete card unless you're willing to turn down the resolution to like 720p.

I am getting x-com as a birthday present for my little brother anyway as we both have steam, so it should be fine anyway. But as in "unpleasent" do you mean "crappy graphics" or "everything is terrible forever".

The problem is that the minimum specs required is a GTX 460 GPU. That's around 11x faster than the Intel HD 2000 that's in your laptop. So it's not really crappy graphics more than I'm just not sure it'll run at over five-ten frames per second. I really doubt it will be playable. Heck EW is barely playable on integrated graphics and Xcom 2 will be much more demanding.

That being said, y'know, there's no reason not to buy the game, try it out, and get a refund if your gameplay experience isn't acceptable.

Still I'd want to save up for a new computer if you're interested in PC games. You want a computer with a dedicated graphics card - for a laptop the GTX 960m is about the lowest I'd go on that front, and that comes in a couple laptops around the $850-$900 dollar mark. It meets the minimum requirements to run Xcom 2, but doesn't meet the recommended requirements.

Better is if you can get a laptop with a 970m, which is roughly equivalent to a desktop GTX 960, which is itself roughly equivalent to the GTX 770 that is the recommended GPU for Xcom 2. a laptop with a 970m will run you around $1500.

Alternatively you can build a desktop with a 960 or a desktop 970 (roughly 60% more powerful than the desktop 960) for around $1000-1100 USD.

Tl;dr this game is likely not playable on any integrated graphics card, but you can find a laptop that will play it for around $900 or so.

The XPS 13 is a bit of an exception to the rule since iirc it has iris HD 520/530 graphics, which are significantly more powerful than most forms of integrated graphics.

Torrannor posted:

I was 12 years old when I realized that I’m not really a man at heart, but rather a 19 foot, 10.5 inch long gatling gun strapped onto a 24,959 pound airframe.

All my life has been a lie but I’m setting that right today. I was designed to kill Alien Supply Barges. From now on, call me “Raven-1.” That’s my real name.

I’m having plastic surgeons attach a Phoenix 30 milimeter rotary Cannon, 1,200 pounds of titanium armor, and two TF34-GE-100 Elerium Afterburners to my body. Central Officer Bradford said I’m loving stupid and I can’t be a jet, but I’m beautiful and I am a goddamn jet.

If XCOM won’t pay for me to get the surgery, I’m just going to bring in Code Pink and point out that that Manning loser is getting hormones and he’s in a gene clinic so why shouldn’t a perfectly well-adjusted and honorably serving soldier have the right to be who they truly are, a metal killing machine?

I am so sick and tired of being oppressed. Now we Ravens are on the Council's chopping block. It’s sickening to see all the white cisgender nazi shitlords literally raping my people with their actions.

It’s my right to spray 2,100 to 4,200 depleted uranium rounds per minute at both soft and hard targets and if you don’t support me and my transformation then you’re an aerialphobe and need to check your weapon platform privilege.

In the DefaultGameCore.ini there is a Second Wave option which you can set to 0/1, but it does nothing. I really want something akin to Not Created Equal and Hidden Potential, there is also a stat range for new soldiers in the same file with these values:

LOW_AIM=55
HIGH_AIM=75
LOW_MOBILITY=11
HIGH_MOBILITY=13
LOW_WILL=25
HIGH_WILL=60

Pretty much the same as it was in Xcom when you had the Second Wave options turned on. But how do I activate them ?
