In addition to what Lotish said, they're a full-fledged class now with a huge list of powers instead of being a dinky template you stick on top of an existing soldier, and you seem to get them significantly earlier in the campaign instead of at the 2/3rds done point because IIRC you get them from either researching sectoid bodies or skulljacking a sectoid, and sectoids are one of the first enemies you ever see.

However, according to Jake they are very hard to get and you'll be lucky if you have more than one in your roster.

No, they are on a cooldown. In one of the previous streams a sectoid managed to mind control one of his soldiers (it was Jake "Hot Load" Solomon) twice.

Yes there is. You see that cross-hairs symbol to the left of enemy hp bar? That shows whether you are going to be able to see that unit from the location you are pointing your cursor at.

In that case, that tree between you and him is blocking your sight. Hardly a LOS bug.

Really loving the extreme amounts of :qq: about the difficulty this game is causing on metacritic and steam reviews. My favorites are the one that complain about turn limits because they like to "take it slow and plan their moves"

Some of the griping feels pretty deserved though honestly. When the game feels like screwing you in a real not-fun way, the procedural map/mission stuff can whip up some terrible things when you've got limited turns.

Like still a fun game, but some of the new stuff can feel pretty ugh.

Any game that involves RNG will have moments where the game just screws you over and you can do nothing about it. Sometimes you have to accept you lost and move on, and XCOM 2 is more forgiving at recovering your losses than XCOM: EU, I feel.

But if you reload over and over to get pass a mission (like some negative reviewers say they are doing), yeah I can see why it can be supremely frustrating.

Bugs and performance issues are legit bad though.

Bullpoo poo it is. Individual replacement soldiers are expensive and/or rare as hell. XCOM:EU let you buy Rookies by the dozen to feed into the meatgrinder.

But you can train those rookies to become squaddies for free, and replacement soldiers simply didn't exist in EU, with the exception of random mission rewards.

Money is also more abundant. In EU I'd frequently find myself out of cash in the middle of the month and dozens of things still to do. This game throws supplies and intel (which you can exchange for more supplies) at you at frequent intervals.

The timers are excellent. They create very tense situations and they require you to plan your moves more carefully, not less. Any feature that does that in a strategy game is a good idea.

My main problem with them is only a small chunk of the missions really allow for that. Mostly just Retaliation, Defend the Mcguffin, and sometimes supply raids.
Outside of that I always find I have to keep them moving along with the team so they are not left behind when we evac.
For investment I mostly mean taking them on missions where another class is better so they unlock the later tree perks that make them worthwhile.

Proper snipers are only inadvisable in evac missions, in my experience. There is nothing preventing them to sit back and shoot across the map while others accomplish the objective.

Run 'n' Gun is amazing. I have it on everyone. I haven't even tried conceal though.

Run n' Gun is still the same ability we love, but conceal is interesting for phantom rangers. Normally, you don't want your phantom ranger to get involved in an engagement, but that means you essentially have one less soldier in a firefight. Conceal lets you to use him once in a tough situation and still continue the mission with your concealed ranger. So it's a get out of jail card.

Alternatively you can have conceal on your blademaster and have him work as a semi-scout? I'm not sure to be honest.

Conceal works great on a blade ranger since they don't need rng. It lets you use them for the first engagement then recloak to figure out everything else, its p. great. Or its a huge escape button if you've over-extended them.

Phantom is super lame in comparison.

For blade rangers you should probably grab all the blade perks except RnG and grab conceal.

Well, the problem is you need a phantom ranger scout during the early game. Blade rangers can't fulfill that role until Lieutenant.

Evac them if the mission allows it. It'll save the soldier.

I think this will tie into tactical changes such as standard rifles being capable of light suppression, have to think more but basically there needs to be options that don't result in you losing a squad member because you didn't kill every enemy, which is the way tactical can work right now.

Alternatively, change the strategy layer so that losing 1 or 2 soldiers in a mission is not a big deal. If getting experienced soldiers through other ways (esp. during the early game) was a bit easier and more reliable it would mitigate the downward spiral tendency the game currently has.
