I think it's probably genetic, but more in terms of inherited behavioural characteristics. We've got an obesity epidemic because we live in an environment of overabundance that doesn't exist in the developing world. Human behaviour is to consume based on your available means, eating more than necessary in times of abundance to make up for the times we lack the same resources. Only in the West we never have periods of going without certain crops and livestock. If we sustained ourselves without importing foreign foodstuffs, we'd be forced into a season-based diet that our physiology is far better suited for because it was the norm only a century ago. e: This is just my undergraduate opinion, of course. I am not a dietician. Endman fucked around with this message at 11:56 on Feb 9, 2016 |

Nibbles! posted:Over abundance of lovely foods mostly. It's pretty hard to overeat on fruit and veg, very easy to do it with simple carbs and fats. If you look at labels when you buy stuff sugar is in pretty much everything processed, and the stuff that proudly displays 'reduced fat' will have a shitload. Not to mention the extremely disingenuous "average serving" based on what I can only assume is the food intake of ants.

BlitzkriegOfColour posted:I don't see why police can't be equipped with a non-bullet rifle that fires a GPS into an offending car, or a high speed drone, or gently caress, something. It's 2016, and our institutions seem to be incapable of inventing creative technical solutions to simple problems. They have high speed drones or, as they're more commonly known, helicopters. There's really no need for police to engage in ridiculous high speed chases. I also support speed limiting cars. It's really not a big deal and the technology has existed for almost a century.
