I did a 4 year engineering program in post-secondary, and all I got out of it was a diploma of technical studies and a certificate of competency. Not a BEng, not a BSc.

I'm real happy with what I ended up with, since the certificate of competency is the legal requirement for doing my job. People at work who insist on using their fancy letters after their names get to refer to me as "the reverend".

Sometimes I wish I had the opportunity to go back to uni, and study things I was simply interested in learning about, without the worry of how I'm going to pay back all the money I had to borrow to attend. Maybe that can be my retirement plan? Back to college so I can blow my retirement fund on tuition and partying.

more falafel please posted:

I had a friend who worked at white hen (kind of like the wawa of the Chicago area) and he would sell me cartons of camels, check my school ID that said I was 16 so the camera would have him carding me, and ring it up as "misc food" for 25 cents

poo poo, when I was younger, just confidently handing over legit ID that showed I was 16yo was often enough to convince the cashier to sell me booze or smokes. Many times they wouldn't check the date. The clerks either just wanted to show that they were asking for ID, or they were convinced by the manner it was presented, or they were in too much of a rush to bother actually reading the thing and doing a tiny bit of math. Other times they would actually read it, and give me the old double take Wait-a-minute, you're not 18!

strange mango for me today. I was nicely tired after dinner, and went to bed at 8:30 last night woke up feeling like I was ready for the day, and checked the clock, was 1-something am. now just past 4am. I think I might be having a nap today. Hope everyone has a good one.

yesterday was a nice day. we (myself, my wife, and our 4yo daughter) went up to the local mountain and did a bit of a walk from the nordic area to the downhill, and did a bit of sledding on the multi-use trail. had a nice little break with popcorn and hot chocolate while we watched the chair lift and fed the whiskeyjacks.

My sister in law just won Christmas. It was neck and neck between the two sisters, but she managed to find gluten free versions of stroopwaffels and salty licorice, very narrowly ekeing out a win vs Mrs. Chiller's gluten free shortbread.
I haven't had any of these in well over a year. These treats used to be right up at the top of my list of favs, until I found out they were killing me.

:siren:*BREAKING NEWS ALERT*:siren:

This just in, officials have reviewed the footage, and we apparently have a 3-way tie! I win, Mrs. Chiller wins, and her sister wins too!

stumbling around youtube, I came across a young lady who plays energetic slap bass covers of a lot of different Japanese pop songs, which led to other recommended videos, ending up at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l-qw9yRFOA

Why yes, I have attempted every method I can think of to unsubscribe and stop these people from spamming me, including phoning and explaining I'm not crossing the border for a service on my car. I did this 3 years ago. It stopped for a while.
Please don't take this as complaining. I'm amazed that someone went to the trouble of turning my number back on in their database during a plague. border's closed yo!

Basically given some medicines and a referral to see to GP asap in the new year.

So, not great news, but it's my first time as an adult staying at a hospital for something like this so if nothing else it was a fascinating experience.

Thanks for the push from you guys who told me to get it checked out, because there was a good chance I would have tried to stick it out otherwise.

How Wonderful! posted:

The CCCC trans thread is really great, a lot of heavy stuff comes up in it, as you might imagine, but a good amount of BYOB energy leaks downwards into CCCC so everybody remains pretty relaxed and nice.

Normally, I would keep my mouth shut, because trans chat is not my area whatsoever, but this being the chat thread and :justpost:, well here we go:

I've been trying to read various iterations of the trans thread, either in cccc or tgrs previously, mostly to try and make sense of a lot of questions and curiosities I have / had (not just trans issues, but when there has been forums turmoil in the past, various tgrs threads have been a nexus for the drama, and I wanted to figure out wtf was happening). But, it became abundantly clear very early in my reading that it is not the place for cishet monolingual anglo whiteboys to really say anything, and the residents of the thread are not there to answer my questions about trans-ness (I don't have an appropriate vocabulary, and this is part of what I'm trying to learn through lurking). A lot of my own incentive to read is to learn about people different from myself, and to gain a different perspective on my own internal thought processes. Trying to slough off the ingrained problematic thinking from my upbringing, and discovering there's a whole lot that I'm oblivious to.

Uh, not sure what to take away from that, other than thanks for the invite, but I don't think it's the thread for everyone.

yah Carcassonne! We play it with our little girl. super pared down rules, with no real scoring, and only now slowly introducing the rule where you can only play your meeple on the tile you just laid. She's finally figured out how to take turns with more than just two players, and is getting good at matching the sides on the tiles. we have the big box set with 5 of the expansions included. Everyone's fav is playing the shepherd, and drawing for sheep I put all the tokens in a little bag, so you reach in and see if you get a sheep or if you get a wolf, yah gotta howl woooooooooooooh!

On the other end of the spectrum, it has a nice thick rule book pamphlet, if you like to do a lot of reading to understand the game before you play your first round. (It's not a big rule book when compared to RPGs, but it is much more substantial than boardgames like candyland)

Great fun for the whole family.
