I just bought an Oculus Rift and set it up yesterday.

This morning I ordered the Touch controllers from Amazon it impressed me so much.

My decision to get the Rift was based on the modular option, lower price, perceived higher quality, and accumulated impression that it is the more comfortable headset.

I have zero regrets, other than that probably next month they'll come out with a newer model with higher resolution display.

But that's the same opportunity cost for any gadget nowadays.

Hell, if it were a special size, you can get one of a thousand chinese manufacturers to make a small batch of them. It's not a sealed case, just a little support frame.

So why doesn't HTC just make them available to end-users?

The point stands that since they don't, the average person with no technical knowledge will be effed. I didn't even know about this when I bought my Rift, and learning about it only confirms I made the right decision.

I hope the new model Rift still uses/supports the same controllers/sensors whenever it eventually comes out. I just got mine last week, bought the touch controllers the day after I hooked it up and tried it out, and now am about to order two additional sensors to support full room scale without occlusion issues.

I'm fine with buying a new headset that supports a higher display resolution (hopefully!) but it would suck to have to buy new controllers and sensors too...

If you've got the money to spare and want the absolute best tracking for four sensors, it's recommended to grab one of these https://www.amazon.com/Express-SuperSpeed-Adapter-Dedicated-Channels/dp/B00HJZEA2S/ otherwise you'll quickly run into USB bandwidth issues. I've run three sensors + headset off a single good USB controller by downgrading one sensor to usb 2.0, but have not been able to get four working without at least two controllers.

Hey thanks! I honestly hadn't even considered that. I have an Asus ROG motherboard with ten built-in USB 3.0 ports so I just assumed I would be good. I'll order one of these also.

What's the effective per-eye resolution of the Rift for comparison?

The more companies that make headsets the better. Of course they're screwed if they don't make them Steam VR-compatible with existing titles.

I always wondered what a game that would receive an AO rating by the ESRB would be like. Hopefully the game will do well enough for Illusion to release more VR games.

Well? So what was the verdict?

Soundboxing is terrific. This is like the only game that can motivate me to work up a sweat, and when I'm in the groove I genuinely dance between punches. Some of the harder beatmaps astound me though - I can't believe there are people coordinated enough to hit all the notes... Also, I'm 5'10" and some of them have me stretching like mad.

Dirt Rally is also great, but I guess I'm more sensitive to motion sickness than I ever thought, because high-speed driving while seated stationary eventually makes me queasy.

Bigscreen/Virtual Desktop are so close to being monitor replacements. Once the headsets get to like 8K resolution everyone will be using these in place of flatscreens.

Based on how much I like Soundboxing I'm going to buy Holodance and Audioshield tomorrow when I get paid. I have an Oculus Rift though - can anyone confirm Audioshield works with Oculus Touch even though it doesn't list compatibility in Steam?

So I did buy Audioshield and Holodance yesterday. Today is the first chance I got to play though, and I just finished a marathon in Audioshield. I haven't tried Holodance yet - maybe tomorrow.

I think Audioshield looks terrific. On max settings the orbs look fantastic, the stadiums are very cool, and I love the translucent shields, particle effects, and futuristic style. It's awesome that you can play anything, and on the hardest setting I think the music almost matches beats. I like the mechanic of different "attacking" orbs with single, multiple straight-on, and sweeping left-to-right or right-to-left multiples, and the combined shields to parry the occasional purple storm.

I have a Rift, and it played perfectly with Oculus Touch.

I wish the Soundboxing dev and the Audioshield dev would hook up and compare code and notes, because I think the fusion of both could be loving amazing.

I know this is probably old hat to everyone in this thread by now, but I just got my Rift maybe a month ago and all this stuff is new to me still. Recommended.

I also bought Wilson's Heart and Prey. drat it's a crazy good time to be a gamer.

I played Holodance briefly yesterday - I am too caught up in Prey right now to spend too much time with other games. But I have to say that of Soundboxing, Audioshield, and Holodance, HD definitely has the best beatmatching. The precision on the tap mechanic to the songs is absolutely perfect, and it has an interesting mechanic with timing as well. The story mode dragons looks lame, and the included music is pretty blah, but it shines in that it includes osu! support. There are literally over 547 beatmap packs on https://osu.ppy.sh/p/packlist and so you can have thousands upon thousands of tracks perfectly mapped to the beat to play with.

The couple osu songs I played were pretty tough, because they include additional mechanics like tapping then dragging the notes in different directions, but they all seemed to have multiple levels of difficulty in the beatmap file itself.

I would rate it recommended as well.

And Rift is cheaper even if you shell out for a third sensor.

Especially so since you don't have to buy the headset audio adapter thingy for the Vive.

If I was to read into that price drop (and the length of time the sale is running) I would speculate that this might be an opportunity for Oculus to rid themselves of stock, prior to unveiling a new revision of the Rift. It has to happen sooner or later...

No matter what though, it results in a very significant price difference between Oculus and its only real competitor. If Oculus has achieved a sufficient reduction in production costs to be able to sell them at that price and still make a profit, then Vive will find itself at a market disadvantage if they cannot similarly reduce price.

Look, I loving hate social media. I don't have a Facebook account and never will. But I bought the Oculus Rift after serious comparison against the Vive. Touch is better than the Vive wands. The Rift headset is more comfortable and lighter. Resolution is essentially identical. At the current price the decision is a no-brainer.

I know there's the main fight between Vive and Oculus, but do you really feel like a second-class citizen with Oculus + Touch on Steam? Have developers (who don't have exclusivity deals) been rather good about supporting both?

Even the titles which don't even list support for Oculus Rift typically work just fine with it.

Example: FORM

In most cases the developer just doesn't own a Rift and is hesitant about flagging their title as fully supporting it.

Not if you specifically play games that aren't designed for room-scale: flight simulators and driving simulators and the like. There are plenty of seated/standing in place VR games.

The Rift is perfectly capable of room-scale experiences - it just likely requires a third or fourth sensor (depending on room size) to work best.

I don't think there are many countries that have made that into a formal consumer protection yet, though.

Didn't this thread go through the exact same thing but with the Vive instead when one dude's wand controller battery crapped out? End result was some wit recommending the goon contract with a factory in China to make a small batch of replacements.

I'm genuinely curious about HTC's cost to manufacture a single Vive. We know they're selling them for a profit, and that business model makes sense as they're not able to offset the hardware with software (game) sales.
