This thread is for discussion of all things crowdfunded, from Kickstarter to Indiegogo. Post links to your Kickstarter here along with your pitch, draft Kickstarters you need advice on, and trad game Kickstarters you've seen and liked.

THE RULES

1. If you have a Kickstarter and you'd like to see it discussed, make your pitch here and people who are looking for things to fund or new games can check it out.

2. Once it has been funded you can go ahead and start your own thread since it is, with the aid of your fellow TG crew, likely a published game in its own right and you are now a famous game designer!

3. This is for discussion and announcement of trad game projects. Discussion on how Kickstarter or the industry works in general is better suited to the Industry Thread.

Their first social goal is 1000 shares and their first stretch goal is 75k (more than twice the funding amount) for a $25 game. They're expecting a lot of backers.

The last two Legendary Showdown KSes hit 100-200k and a lot of those backers will be interested in another expansion to the game they have, so they're probably a right. This will be harder on the goon than the Kickstarter.

Honestly I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been a big tabletop Kickstarter for a game about Those Dang SJWs yet. I think various OSR people making GBS threads themselves about Feminists Online to drum up book sales proves there's a market for it even in niche spaces. Someone with actual followers launching a Kickstarter for The Free Speech Teen Panties RPG could make some mad bank.

I think it was poorly thought out on my part to pair discussion of Mikan and GMS. I am morbidly curious about what exactly happened with Mikan and I think other folks are too. When the information presented is "people on the Internet harassed them" it naturally leads to speculation and assumptions about what that harassment consisted of and whether it was serious enough to go into hiding over. That latter question is assuming that Mikan would make an irrational decision about going into hiding, and so it's actually pretty insulting to ask. For the people asking about whether the harassment was really that bad, keep in mind that you're indirectly insulting a victim by doing that. That said, I'll say I'm curious about what happened but I respect Mikan enough to think they made the best decision for themself.

This seems like a good post to end this on, so I am putting a lid on this for now before you folks start eating each other. Post about Mint Works or Fragged Empires or What Ho, World! or something.

This obvious joke does bring a real question: Did anyone else try the Transmedia Empire idea after GMS shot himself in the foot with an assault rifle for half a decade?

7th Sea took a shot at it at $1.25M and there have been a few Kickstarters that tried to do it. I'm pretty sure someone tried to rip off Hearthstone that way but it's probably long since failed and I can't find it now.

You seem like a cool skelly and were also a cool santa so I'm thinking about giving your anime a shot. Is it purely a visual novel or is there any interaction/branching plot planned? I don't really know much about these things, so I'm not sure what exactly that entails.

There's gonna be a lot of interaction but I'm probably gonna avoid branching. I'm a little wary of it because it could easily turn into a ton of work, and I'd rather not ruin my ~transmedia empire~ on my first attempt!

Hey folks. I'm planning to Kickstart layout and art for a new edition of Retrocausality, a time travel game I made in like 2013 but never got professional work on. I already wrote the book so I'm aiming for a low-cost campaign that doesn't need much more writing/editing, if any. How does this draft look?

E: I'm using some placeholder art for now, the final will have a different header and a bit more art in the description.

Evil Mastermind posted:

real edit: there's no way he has permission for all that art.

Other problems I've noticed:
  • When I first saw this I wasn't even sure he had the rights to Superhero: 2044. Apparently he does and he's even got Lou Zocchi (who was involved in the original) on as an advisor, but the pitch does not mention these basic facts. This is an advertising softball.
  • This game seems to be selling itself on having the rights to re-release ~the original Superhero RPG~, but the pitch is all about D&D and how he wants to make a game as popular as D&D.
  • You'd think people who play other superhero RPGs are potential backers, but other superhero games are only mentioned in the pitch to bad-mouth them like it's a failed niche he intends to revive:

    quote:

I was looked at with a smidge of skepticism when I began discussing with people the possibility of doing an RPG based on comic books and super heroes. Basically it was like the movie Forrest Gump when Tom Hanks goes to buy a shrimp boat from an old mariner on the Gulf Coast- “ Is ya stupid or something?”.

    quote:

Both major comic book publishing houses have had offerings by game developers over the years but each one had it’s flaws, critics, and detractors. If you are making game based on popular heroes you start out with certain disadvantages. Extremely powerful characters cannot be watered down or large corporations who make billions on T-shirt sale get nervous. Game mechanics and gameplay balance ne damned. The smaller companies without a major DC or Marvel license in hand seemed to give up on the visual demands of the comic book public right away. So lack of visuals in the comic book realm is sure death. Many of those games presume the creation of a compelling comic book universe from scratch. Good luck with that.
  • This is extra weird because the game is apparently written by Ross Payton, Steve Perrin, Jennifer Schoonover, and Wayne Shaw, who all have credits on other great superhero games. I would namedrop the gently caress out of these people. Instead they're only mentioned in the softcover book reward tier and two of them don't even get credits listed. Why is the pitch putting down other games instead?
  • The art team is also pretty good, and also only mentioned in the hardcover tier. It's the longest backer tier description by far, and most of it is misplaced promo. This is weird considering half the entire page is selling the game on the strength of its art.
  • The story the pitch tells is exaggerated at best. He says he "found" SH:2044 when he "began to look at older games" but in articles like the one I linked above the creator says SH:2044 is a childhood fave of his. This is a minor thing but what? :v:
  • This:

    quote:

The result is a universe specifically generated FOR a game as opposed to a makeshift retrofit of popular characters into a game.
is a hell of a thing to say when the first two adventures are Dracula and Arkham Asylum (it's literally called Arkham!), you namedrop Van Helsing and Cthulhu, and you're literally using Marvel's Thor.
  • The Photoshopped mockup art is kinda awkward, especially considering one of them is literally has a Marvel panel on it.
  • The Gameplay section is badly written ("Game play can be quick and simple, where you use the stats on the character profile to a multi-level game with in-depth rules and guidelines which include purchasing enhancements, equipment and vehicles." is a hell of a sentence), which would make me worried about the book's writing if I didn't look at the backer tiers.
  • The risks and challenges section's two paragraphs are "The hardest part... is looking this good!" and "we did a bunch of research into what the fans like and we're going to do a shitload of playtesting!". I know almost everybody just uses the "Risks and challenges" section to brag about themselves these days but come on.
  • Comic Sans.
