I'll never quite understand the appeal of glow in the dark components in games. Like, are there people who are ACTUALLY playing their game in the dark to get any value out of them? And for what amount of time would that actually be effective anyway? Or do people just like the soft whitish-greenish color of GITD stuff or something?

I have a glow-in-the-dark Gamescience set (including such strictly necessary dice as the d3, d16, d24...) and a glow-in-the-dark FATE Cthulhu horror set. The main "use" is to flick off the power when you lose a die to find it, but it's mainly just a novelty, since most glow-in-the-dark paints require it to be pitch black for their light to be visible. But then, nearly all the dice marketed for the RPG hobby are novelty dice of one sort or another, given the variety of colors and styles out there.

In an ideal world, nude minis would be NBD.

In a hobby where objectification and alienation of women is an ongoing and persistent issue, it's more of a factor, particularly when the norm in minis is to solely depict them as pinup models with tits akimbo. Things are slowly changing in that regard, but slowly. It has less to do with the relative amount of clothing (though that is a factor) and more half the population being depicted overwhelmingly as gently caress targets.

As far as pinup stuff goes this seems relatively harmless but there's just a larger picture where a lot of folks are either just annoyed or tired of this sort of thing. Even if you don't agree with the sexism angle there's more than a small degree of oversaturation, and this KS in particular seems like it's delivering the fully clothed versions almost as a form of apology more than anything else. When you have the pinup outfit right next to it, it reeks of wanting to eat your cheesecake and have it afterwards, so to speak.

It's good to see but I have zero interest in the old Deadlands system. To me, seeing the conclusion of their plot point campaigns (and the game's metaplot thus far) feels a lot more significant. Still, it's almost like seeing the beginning and end of the line at the same time.

Well, it's about a highborn Italian manchild who seeks revenge through often the most underhanded, sociopathic means available, who frequently avenges wronged women and betters the world by raising a society of poisoners and facestabbers.

That doesn't make it bad, it just has a fair deal of commonality with his writing ticks.

Looking forward to seeing the new Pixel Tactics set, but I'm one of the few serious devotees of the game here. Hopefully it means in the future they'll be able to do something more elaborate like an Exceed set, but that'd take a lot more work. As it is, it's a much better use of the license than previous efforts, IMO.

My Son is a super huge Mega Man fan, so I backed this for him, kind of as a Holiday present, and so he can experience the, uh, wonders of Kickstarter. Is the game actually any good? I picked up some other actually released pixel tactics for him to learn first and have something on the actual present opening day.

I'm biased as the former Pixel Tactics GenCon champion, but it's a lot of fun. It's kind of swingy because the effects of cards can get pretty wild, but relies on doing 2-out-of-3 (or more) matches to mitigate that. I really like all the tough tactical choices positioning presents. I can't say with certainty, but Mega Man at least gets to come in a late period of development where they know how to balance the game better than they did in early sets.

Xelkelvos posted:

IMO, the concept is interesting in parts, but it's super swingy with everything. Everything is resolved through dice rolls and there's no real way to mitigate a bad roll once it hits the table. All players can do is generally anticipate risk where they can and deal with the fallout when they can't. Combat is even worse as hit locations upon damage resolution is generally randomized. Roll to defend, roll to hit, roll to see if it deals damage. The damage system and how the bosses (the only thing you actually fight) work is pretty interesting as they are basically on autopilot through a deck of cards and dealing damage removes cards from that deck, limiting the opponent's abilities the more damage is dealt.

Yeah, dumb tit poo poo aside, I liked the grim idea of humans struggling against a monster-infested world, but ultimately what I've seen seemed to be rolling a lot of tables for random stuff and then having a fight that may be affected by that random stuff. People talked it up to me at GenCon so maybe there's something I'm missing, but it mostly felt like a game where the only thing to do tactically is memorize the card decks to know their effects and to card count and act based on that.

There's plenty of play in one box, but two boxes are better. Plus you don't get stretch goal cards with only one box.

In general Pixel Tactics is most balanced when both players are playing the exact same decks, but having more than one type of deck would help provide a lot more options. I have no idea how well the two decks will measure up against one another but it's likely not a big deal.

Let's not forget Robotech RPG Tactics. And while you can mostly blame Palladium, the original rules put together between them and Ninja Division (aka Soda Pop) were dull, minimum-effort miniatures rules. And that was even before Palladium got their hands on the controls of the veritech and angled straight for the ground.

You could just ape what happens in TV shows, but... ugh, then you'd be contributing to the problem.

I'm not sure a tabletop RPG is where you try and raise awareness of the realities of our legal system. It needs to be a fun story, not a trial primer.

Ultimately it'd have to ascribe to the rules of drama. I feel lazy in bringing up Dramasystem, but it could work for doing a single trial - the real issue is that something like L&O would require a lot of one-shot characters which Dramasystem would need some tweaking to handle. But it'd be a good place to start - one of the main issues I could see in doing trials in RPGs is that there isn't much reason for witnesses to cave in aside from the handwaviness of most persuasion skill mechanics, and Dramasystem fixes that. Of course, it would also presume players would have to be taking up all the roles - prosecution, defense, and judge at the very least. If you're looking to a game where players are solely on the defense or prosecution team, it would probably require something different.

The idea of Dark Souls + Monster Hunter as a campaign minis game is a pretty cool one, and they have talented artists. But it's one of those properties that mistakes vulgarity for maturity, and doesn't have a consistent tone as a result. It's hard to invest emotionally in the grim struggle for survival in the face of poo poo-eating and dick-stealing... and that's before we get into porn minis. They obviously enjoy doing porny minis, and that's not bad in and of itself. However, you have the issue that they were originally put alongside imagery of women being victimized with heavy sexual overtones, in an industry that already has trouble depicting women as more than cleavage stands. You also have the whole thing where the pinup minis are "non-canon" despite being notably used to market the game... a bit of wanting to have it both ways. "See, you can play Kingdom Death for the articles."

I mean, say what you want about Soda Pop, at least they own being anime creeps. It's not the 25mm tits alone that makes KD:M offputting, after all. If nothing else, a game that markets itself with the word "boutique" while seeking to produce dung beetle-themed pinups deserves a raised eyebrow at the very least.

But it should be a thing that's a very deliberate notion that's important to the game... but usually it just seems to be a cargo cult mechanic that goes in games because D&D had it and if it was good enough for Gary it's good enough for your pulp treasure hunting game, political vampire drama, or Sailor Moon.

You have a legal requirement to not confuse customers by stating or implying a trademark infringement, but there is no legal protection for competitors claiming that their products are compatible with yours.

I think she's referring to the Pathfinder Compatibility License, which lets you use an official PCL logo and the like, but has specific restrictions. Not that Paizo seems to watch products that use it very closely, but really egregious violations might catch their eye.
