I like how Sucy is shaping up to being something like an rear end in how she just experiments on you without your consent or knowledge but otherwise is kinda chill; like she takes it as payment for tolerating you in her presence.

Diana being actually flustered about praise she didn't earn, and perhaps guilty about it is really nice. Like what if Draco had a sense of honour.

The extra world building and Luna Nova being something of an international multicultural school is nice.

Terrific

also, boooooo to the witch hat only sometimes being part of the uniform

Her skirt seems longer and more modest than in the ED/other materials, which I like; and what ever happened to the thing where the skirt for flying on the brooms is also supposed to be some sort of pajamas for modesty security reasons? I liked the idea but I haven't really seen anything to indicate it since.

I have a feeling that if Twilight was written as a Japanese light novel and adapted into an anime I'd probably unironically watch it. It's the typical sorta fantasy wish fulfillment thing, bland everyday normal person gets swept up into strange happenings and falls in love with a mysterious demihuman and ends up in a love triangle/harem situation with other demihumans because they love the character for their honesty and bland kindness.

But in this case it's genderflipped so I'd 100% watch it because I have an odd fondness for Otome.

The only reason why I don't read Twilight even though logically it's basically what I already like based on its tropes is because of some troubling things about one of the books being a giant metaphor for abstinence before marriage that I don't care for and don't wish to endorse.

Seems very Ghibli to me in a good way for some reason.

I expect Andrew is meant to be a recurring character? I don't get the sense that his arc is complete; but I think he probably had fun adventuring with Akko though right?

I really like how Chariot really is the perfect role model to Akko and was just as much a mess at the start and getting into messes.

The way it showed how Chariot earned her powers through blood, tears, and folly was really nice and a good wake up call for Akko.

It's been annoying me how even though part of her motivations almost begs for her to have an almost Hermione like enthusiasm for magic, she doesn't really take it seriously at all and treats Luna Nova more like a fancy prep middle/high school.

The show is 25 episodes long. Give her time -- Akko's gonna pull a Noriko (Gunbuster) on us, just wait and see. Basically, this first arc was just Akko having to learn that you have to work hard to succeed at your goals, and that awesomeness doesn't just fall in your lap from the get-go. That's going to make it really worth while when she ends up saving the world or something by the end of the series.

That teary-eyed moment at the end of it plucked my heartstrings. Wonderfully animated!

Just to be clear, by "annoying" I don't mean the show annoyed me in this regard of her characterization; but rather that she annoyed me with her flippancy. I look forward to her growing more as a person. :)

I think the fact that she came out of that adventure suddenly able to understand fish hints at her underlying talent.

I thought that was her botching transforming back to Human; but yeah, Akko really needs a break in the form of some sort of talent. Harry had skill at flying on a broom, was decently good at teaching others, parseltongue, and could cast some advanced spellcasting (Patronis? Am I forgetting anything?).

Harry also could ace potions with the right instructions if Snape ever gave a drat. :v:

I think it'd be hard to have a grander plot with stakes when the magic system is a little less clear than Harry Potter's was.

If they can pull it off great, but right now my expectations are firmly in "The daily adventures of Akko and friends".

This was a solid episode. It was funny, heart warming, adventurous, I felt like we had a bit of solidity to the world building, and the headmistress got some good moments.

I didn't expect that twist from the Pirate guy, and I liked how the headmistress was surprisingly nonchalant about seeing her deadbeat dad again.

LWA seems to have something similar to the Typemoon Universe except to a lesser extent when it comes to magic; you have socio-economic forces grinding down the practicality of magic to the point that it's mostly running off of its fumes, the allure of magic, and the sense of wonder and specialty it enjoys keeping it going.

The Communist Manifesto describes the process of capitalism grinding down the once sacrosanct professions down to a T and Andrew's dad presumably being some sort of rich mogul seems like an excellent stand in for the forces of inevitability.

What magic is left with, is something comparable to the specialist antique craftsman, and Akko will blaze a trail to find Magic's new and proper place in the modern world.

I don't really like trite love potion stories but I do have a fondness for "Love potion turns out to had never worked all along because those feelings were real." And it made me happy they vaguely went that direction.

I sorta feel like Diana getting caught up in a fit of narcissism was a little unfair though, TV Diana isn't really an rear end on screen towards Akko, just short on patience and understandably exasperated with someone she feels is stomping over her own hard work and lineage.

The saddest thing this episode though is that is legit jossed the fan theory someone posted I really liked about Akko possibly just being really rich and her parents paid for her way in to Luna Nova.

It could still be true that Akko doesn't really understand what "affluence" is compared to an Earl and thinks she's just middle class or whatever but I liked the idea that she was offhandedly loaded.

I dunno why but I liked the first Andrew episode and also liked this one; can't put my finger on the different elements in terms of character development, plot, and story beats that come together.

I compared LWA with HP in what if HP didn't have Voldemort and Harry got to live a happy life with his still alive parents but still got on adventures with Ron and Hermione.

Nitrousoxide posted:

Being the chosen one is much more like being Harry than anything else. Harry, in fact was not really terribly good at much magic except for flying a broom. His grades were always below average in most classes and was thrown into the wizarding world at a much later age than all of his classmates. He was only comparable to the rest of the wizards and witches because he had his unusually powerful artifacts like the sword, phoenix wand (comparable to the staff Akko gets) , and a couple of teachers who would surreptitiously bail him out from time to time (Snape/Dumbledore/Ursula).

Not completely accurate, there are some plot important "difficult" spells that only Harry shows aptitude for (Patronus); and Harry comes off as really good at passing his knowledge back to his classmates (Dumbledore's Army).

Then also if he's taught correctly he's very quick to pick up difficult spells/potions like from Snape's notebook.

Akko putting her name in the Goblet of Fire or otherwise being a bit of an anti-Hero in how she's so driven by what is most commonly seen as a villainous virtue, Ambition; are all kinds of interesting to think about.

What if Akko is this series's Tom Riddle? :aaa:
