I like how the pro-coup crowd in the me thread tactfully ignore mentioning how pretty much every coup in Turkey since the 60's was equally as much about suppressing Islamic "reactionaries" (as they called them as) as they where about killing communists

One thing you learn about Thatcher when reading about her governments NI policy is that she was really really thick and had to have everything about diplomacy slowly and carefully explained to here

BI NOW GAY LATER posted:Having things carefully explained to you doesn't mean you're thick. Thatcher didn't understand what Irish nationalism was and openly said she found it completely incomprehensible and just didn't understand what it was about. At an interstate conference. With the Irish Taoiseach. To his face.

On one side of the table you had a guy who had moved against the political current to arrange a top table agreement and was willing to force through unpalatable constitutional changes to cooperfast a diplomatic solution. On the other side you had a bemused Thatcher who didn't exactly understand what all this was about.

half of thatchers foreign policy involved sending notes to the foreign office saying "do this" and then them responding with "are you sure that's really dumb" and she would get really mad

now is the time to hastily switch sides and prop up a weak leader so overly reliant on support they are malleable to your whims IMO. Also a convenient opportunity to purge possible opponents In conclusion death to the illegal coup

I think the emphasis on democratising the inner workings of the labour party is going to run into problems as soon as a conflict between the unions and the membership surfaces - it was the new labour and soft left wings that dismantled the block vote in leadership contests and introduced omov against the wishes of the left wing of the party after all.

# ¿ Jul 22, 2016 15:34 |

Giving registered supporters a vote was savaged by the left wing of the party when it was initially suggested as the scheme previously had been dreamt up by the right as well
