Didn't the "draft" used to just be random picks? I don't know why they don't go that route again. At least it will stop making Smackdown leaders look like morons for making lovely picks. Hell, they could use it as a storyline point.

*Mauro shifts his eyes from left to right suspiciously*

The original Vince and Flair draft operated pretty much just like the new brand split draft, except it was a top six followed by a lottery off-screen instead of a top ten. It was the yearly drafts afterward that were random lotteries, usually with cross-brand matches to determine who got a lottery pull.

Every cruiserweight ppv match sucks in comparison to the matches on 205. Was the last good one like, Aries and Neville at Wrestlemania?

And one of those guys found a way to get himself fired/released and the other is trapped in “you owe us dates and we crossed a threshold of investment in you so we actually care about you going elsewhere” purgatory because he wanted out of cruiserweight purgatory.

I wonder what sort of money Neville is owed that he refuses to give up that prevents them from just cutting him that check and saying “best of luck, future endeavors, etc.” or if they are trying to ratfuck him on his release by trying to block him working for any company with a TV deal or something and he refuses because he knows ROH/NJPW/World of Sport/Impact/indies like MLW all would offer him dates and good quotes within like an hour of the announcement going live.

This should be a hint of the end point for most 205 guys.

I mean this is the purpose of NXT so why would 205 Live be different.

Considering Gran Metalik had the obvious warning sign of Mistico’s excursion into the company as a warning sign, he doesn’t really have anyone to blame but himself for his current situation. As well as everyone else, who just had to look at the fact that the last time a WWF non-heavyweight division was of any import, the title was in New Japan.

I wonder how many of those guys look at Zack and Ibushi and regret the choice they made.

Man, remember when they let Liger work the opening match of a TakeOver just because Liger wanted to say he had worked a match in WWE at least once, just to complete his bucket list? That NXT is so far gone now.

Well yeah, that’s fair, since when signing, especially in the middle of the Cruiserweight Classic, it all seems like it’s going to go great, and then it... doesn’t.

man after the first CWC I was really hoping they'd both sign but looking at what happened soon after, I'm glad they didn't. Maybe a few of the 205 guys enjoy more exposure than they would have received but ZSJ and Ibushi definitely didn't need it.

Crazy to think it was only two years ago. Between then and now, Zack has pinned or submitted multiple world champions in what’s the second or third biggest company globally (CMLL has to be considered bigger, right? The consistent sellouts of Arena Mexico and whatnot) and Ibushi went to the finals of the G1 while still not signing a contract with anyone. They’re treated as draws and not as cattle.

Considering all of 205 Live feels like they signed at the same time - they’ve brought up, what, like three or four people since the show premiered? - I do wonder what WWE intends to do once they hit the “re-sign or release” fork in the road. Do they just give up on a Cruiserweight belt and let most of the division go? Or do they give everyone slight bumps in pay to entice them to stay and keep the static pattern of “Hunter books a good show with things that will never really mean much because the build to the PPV is really just a build to the pre-show where apparently someone other than their normal agent decides they need to ‘slow it down’ to ‘make every move count’ or some poo poo”.

Rey’s run in WWE is one of the worst ever when it comes to how talented a guy is compared to how the company treats them.

I guess if a guy has a mask maybe they think they can sell a bunch of masks like Rey did/does.

It's really amazing how much they hosed up Devitt, they went to the wall with him out of the gate on the main roster and, you know what? It was working!

Then he busted his shoulder because of a misfired barrier bomb and before too long they're painting him pumpkin orange and setting him to wrestle Bray in drag

Wish I still had that screenshot of his stare into the middle distance that screams "I left an Armani endorsement behind for this, I was on billboards in Tokyo like three years ago, I think I hosed up bigly" during a backstage interview in the middle of his Corbin feud.

I do sincerely wonder if he made the demand to go down to NXT so that he could quietly slip out the back door when his contract finishes (it's hard to figure out when it ends, I've been googling around - he went to NXT in 2014, he would have signed an extension when he went up to the main roster in 2016, but I can't seem to find anything about a new contract since then, it just disseminates into him marrying the lady from Fox Sports and him returning to NXT) especially now that he could work both a cable TV wrestling product outside of WWE and have a big return run in New Japan.

I wonder how annoyed he must be with Hiromu being like probably the #3 star in New Japan behind Naito and Okada.

Actually, I imagine he's just incredibly annoyed overall after being so fundamental in the creation of Bullet Club and watching almost everyone else that got attached to it being bigger stars than he is. In his current promotion? AJ is in the sweet zone of perpetual upper-card, main event status. Elsewhere? The Bucks and Kenny and Cody have their own loving promotion. Even the Kiwi young boy he and Fale got into the Inoki dojo has already held the most prestiguous title in wrestling and is a cemented main eventer and is one of the most over heels in wrestling.

And here he is, on NXT. Not even doing much of anything of note. I can't remember the last time anyone talked about Finn Balor since that time he did a Pele kick while slipping out of his leather jacket for his heel turn.

Poor Fergal. :(

He apparently mentioned last year he sees about another eight years left in him, I can't imagine he intends on spending most of those in WWE at this point, especially not when Tony and TNT would love to flip open the checkbook for him.

poo poo, an Apollo 55 reunion would probably move some tickets.

Don’t know if Bushiroad would spring for “You’re The Best”, though. And it wouldn’t be quite right without it.

But imagine them running Devitt/Ibushi now.

Or, wait for it: Real RocknRolla vs. The Aerial Assassin.

Mostly I think I miss the guy who reacted to an Anderson/Okada chain of reversals like so: :ohdear::newlol::ohdear::newlol::ohdear::newlol::ohdear::newlol::ohdear::newlol::ohdear::newlol::ohdear::newlol:RAINMAKAAAAAAAAH:kingsley:

Never mind his potential AEW matchups. Imagine Devitt/Darby. Devitt/Guevara. Devitt/Omega for the first time since like BOSJ 20 or whenever their last match was. He’s got so many more money matches outside of his current spot than he ever would inside, and while he said he did his art, now he’s doing his money, it’s gotta be real enticing to be able to do both.

In retrospect it's pretty wild that Devitt was the only BC leader to not hold the IWGP heavyweight title. I know he challenged Tanahashi and Okada and worked the G1 as a junior, but was there ever a plan to move him up to permanent heavyweight before he left?

From what I remember that was a big part of him leaving: the junior to heavy shift was even rarer back then than it is now, and dude isn’t especially big (remember this was a time before ZSJ was a socialist beanpole stretching everyone), so he felt like he hit the ceiling and wouldn’t get the shots even as they fed him crumbs like the G1 run and the title matches.

Had he stuck around, as the promotion changed, they probably would have said “gently caress it, he’s done everything he can in the juniors and women love him, let’s make him heavyweight and get that easy money”.

But I imagine if he ever does pull the trigger on going outside of WWE again, he’d make more money out of New Japan with the return run than he would sticking around.

I can see him taking a minor dip in pay to work four days a month, with a fifth day every few months or so, and then working elsewhere as he desires. Especially as he watches Jericho, Hardy, Moxley, and Brodie all enjoying themselves.

It’s sorta like how Bryan is like “maybe I’ll stop being an active wrestler” but we all know the moment he leaves WWE he’s gonna be ringing Rocky Romero hourly to get him in touch with someone to put him in a G1 tournament. Because you know that’s a bucket list thing for the dude.

Put it on first since he'll main event someday when he's holding the title. Punk wrestling again is also big enough it doesn't need additional pomp and circumstance, let punk's first match and punk's first aew main event be different matches. Also being first gives the rest of the card space without burning it the crowd, start high, let them drop a little, build to the main.

But also it won't matter in the slightest and the only reason Tony might be thinking about this as hard as we are is because he's also terminally online.

Nah, figuring out how to close out a show is important, you’ll notice Tony either closes with a big moment or a babyface victory so the show closes and the crowd goes home happy, which is important to get people to keep tuning in for the following TV. It’s only after a certain point, years of existence, when you can pull the downer ending and people are bought in enough to go “no, this will eventually end well, this will turn around”, and if you go back to the well too much - cough WWE cough - it’ll begin to put off portions of the audience and they won’t come back for anything but big marquee stuff and then drop back out again (in other words, WWE has made hardcores into casuals… by chasing casuals, who by nature aren’t going to stick around! They’re casual!). Tony’s 100% thought a lot about how to close something like this where he’s got two very easy choices for show closers.

So, Bryan in the post title match stuff? It closes the show. Kenny wins and nothing in the post-match except for maybe some Elite beat down on Christian or something? You end with Darby/Punk. If the crowd isn’t leaving buzzing or happy, unless you’re sure you’ve got them secured on the hook before they even arrived at the building (i.e, Naito at Wrestle Kingdom 12), you better make sure you put one in the water for them to bite on.

I mean this is sort of how the Dusty Finish worked - you give the crowd a happy ending, and then later, you invalidate it for a later real payoff but you still gave people that happy ending originally so they’d leave the building excited for the next NWA show to come to the area. Eventually it backfired because crowds stopped trusting the happy ending even when it was the real feud ender, but in theory, it made sense.
