Republicans are in a tough spot. If things got bad enough they could come out and say they're not going to defend Trump anymore and instead they'll focus on congressional and states races. The thing is they kind of have to cling to the possibility of winning the presidency, because losing that almost certainly means losing the Supreme Court.

My feelings of schadenfreude are immense.
They're stuck with him now. They had the chance earlier in the spring to stop him at the convention, but they never found a strategy and now they're screwed, to the hilarity of everyone watching them flail around as a party.

When was the last time you had Republican politicians openly saying they will vote for/campaign for their party's opponent in a presidential race? Certainly not in my lifetime.

Right Wing Twitter is freaking out about this because the WSJ wrote some article claiming that it was a hostage pay off.

Meanwhile there is substantial evidence that Reagan secretly negotiated with the Iranians in order to make sure the American hostages from the Embassy weren't freed until after the election in 1980 so he would win.

Remember that he specifically says "well if Hillary wins in November and gets to appoint her judges", which blows a hole in the Trump camp explanation that ''oh, he was just saying that gun owners need to go vote for him". He's clearly saying that if Clinton wins extrajudicial methods will be needed to ensure she can't appoint judges who will take your guns.

Unskewers are likely to blame. I'm not a pollster, so I don't know if not being a registered voter automatically excludes you from a LV poll (even though you say you'll likely vote this election), but the thing is this:

1. if Obama was /so hated/ by America for ruining it after 08, how come we didn't see a massive flood of new voters in 2012 to vote him out?
2. Hispanics and Muslims are registering for the first time in droves because Trump pissed them off.
The media isn't covering much of the reality that Trump has zero campaign infrastructure anywhere. That's going to be a massive disadvantage come November. Say what you will about Romney's messed up analytics and terrible internal polls, but he at least had a semblance of a ground game.

I suspect a lot of non-Americans from countries with UHC have a hard time understanding how Americans put up with their crappy health care system. I honestly get the politics behind the US system and understand why reform is so hard. However I have to admit to an irrational instinct to personally blame Americans for failing to implement UHC, like are you guys too stupid or something? A bunch of total backwater nations managed to implement single-payer, you can't seriously claim it's impossible in the vaunted US of A etc etc.

Re the Aetna thing, I honestly thought Obamacare was a major win for the insurance industry. Mandating everyone buy private health insurance and suppressing any sort of public option seemed like an insurance company CEO fever dream. I was completely wrong, they can't even keep up the pretense of the private sector being able to provide health insurance for the entire population. The insurers leaving the exchanges are all but formally announcing they only want to insure people who don't have any real health issues and let the government deal with the rest.
I'm just hoping that this leads to an actual public option, but I tend to doubt it. The main problem I had with Obamacare was exactly this: that it was a half-measure at best. Granted, going from our current system straight to single-payer would be messy, but considering how the right-wing has acted like Obamacare is basically that anyway, that's what they should have done. People like Max Baucus in the Senate ensured that there would be no public option though, since they were buddies with the healthcare industry.
