unless the actor or whoever is actually interested in a topic, and excited to learn about it (see: tony robinson docos being generally pretty good), it just comes across as marketing

I typed out a big effort post but somehow it ended up disappearing. Anyway there is defiantly a sub-class of documentaries where a famous actor actually knows a lot about a subject and really cares about it, plus they are obviously great on camera which can't always be said for many academics no matter how photogenic they are.
Anyway I was going to recommend Peter Capaldi (Dr Who) on Scottish art and Simon Russell Beale on Sacred music. Obvs both BBC4 because who else cares about that poo poo.

i was in the rijksmuseum in amsterdam a few weeks back, interesting similarities in style and dress in some of the scottish portraits to dutch ones from the same era
