yeah looking at super old cars you can see why early electric cars were actually competitive for a while even though they were lovely heavy rear end bullshit full of lead-acid batteries or why steam engine cars lasted as long as they did even though you needed to fill the water tank before every trip and start it 10 minutes before you actually wanted to go anywhere to give the boiler time to warm up

meanwhile i just put gas into my 98 toyota every once in a while and take for granted that it will take me however far i need to go, whenever i want, and that it'll probably last for another ten years with minimal maintenance

Moist von Lipwig posted:we will likely never surpass the energy density of gasoline with battery technology even if you have to cart around your own oxygen it's still worth it gently caress even if you have to bring the oxygen and gasoline all the way from earth to, like, mars, it would still be worth considering having a gas engine in your rover

i love how "dumb looking spinny thingy that's going to get knocked off in so many parking garages" is still apparently the best solution we have for lidar? at least the receiver is super tiny now http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/semiconductors/optoelectronics/mit-lidar-on-a-chip dunno why they can't use a DLP chip for the laser projector

Sagebrush posted:i made some fermi estimates i like this but i think some of your numbers are just a bit off; unloaded tanker car is closer to 30 tonnes for example, also that 0.1 s i think is actually an overestimate. if we assume a train car is basically a rigid chunk of steel then the delta t is roughly the length of the train car divided by the speed of sound in steel, which ends up being something like 3.5 milliseconds so 15 MPa of instantaneous pressure upon impact, or more than 2000 PSI (although if you assume the force gets to act through a longer distance, i.e. through a fleshy meatbag human body, then the pressure will be lower, though still quite enough to squash you like a grape getting hit by a hammer)
