Catching up on the last few days of posts in this thread has been loving wild. I think part of the reason a lot of this poo poo works is that it's hard to imagine a person lying on that kind of scale. Like, yes, everyone has told a few lies in their life, but most people do not compose an entire soap opera with multiple terminally ill characters and try to sell you on it as their actual existence. Our brains just aren't ready to deal with something like that.

When coolguye first mentioned some of this stuff on discord years ago I legitimately just thought TDI was doing a weird bit and didn't think much else of it. After all, it's not like he was expecting to be taken seriously, right? Right?

Anyway, there's actually a better but far less interesting and funny reason for there not being a mod challenge in LP since then; it's actually really difficult to make a mod challenge funny. Like. At minimum you need someone you want to ban or at least punish harshly over their bullshit. But also someone you want to potentially let off. Then you need a challenge that's appropriate to said bullshit that needs to be, you know, doable but just challenging enough to, you know, be a challenge worth overcoming for clemency, but also not something so specific that other posters can't also compete. Finally, the whole endeavour, including the competition itself, has to be funny. How that works exactly depends on the context but like. This is LP. We don't really have very many contexts.

It's really very rare for all of these elements to come together in LP. Hell it's rare enough we get the first and most fundamental element at all - the guy. LP is quiet and drama free for months at a time. And when something does come along, it is invariably either a minor dispute over spoilers or... the Pokémon Amputee Sex Slave ROM Hack LP Request Guy. Or wesflarger. Or... The Dark Id.

Also mod challenges aren't really, like, a thing across the forums anymore. The culture had long since shifted away from that kind of forums content creation and if punishments are called for they're usually pretty direct and swift. And if reactions aren't fast enough, well, see you in Forums Court SAD. Which is arguably sort of the replacement content, in a Jerry Springer-esque fashion.

making that kind of post has been a genuine hobby for that poster over a long enough period of time across multiple subforums that, I think, a lot of people are just exhausted of him

As far as I'm aware, Chip and Grant are the gold standard of VLP, a format that has largely been superseded by regular streaming for the majority of the Internet.

That's not a joke, cspam is infamous for taking the worst parts of politics doomscrolling and shoving them into an insular echo chamber that actively erodes your sense of personal shame and replaces it with outrage. Much of it performative, for clout.

Actually since you're here, and this is just tangentially related to the thread's ostensible brief, but I still think your playthrough of FFXIV where you pretty much ignored the story to just cruise the casino and nightclub RP scene was genuinely inspired.

It's a shame people got weird about it but I'm glad you did it, that was good stuff.

Never played FFXIV but I remember during the launch period when it was a cool thing to hate on it left and right because of Squeenix's sheer laziness in actually making a good game. everyone still dunks on FFXIV 1.0, even the guy who blew it up and used its remains to make the version of the game people talk about today

claw game handjob posted:

Since the thread's never going to happen, the game also has a happy ending I will spoil here.

The game was made by an artist and a writer who crowdfunded the whole thing in the kickstarter boom era. The artist proceeds to turn in everything to contract, down to the last letter: X sprites for Y characters, backgrounds, etc., and he gets done way ahead of the writer. Artist is also the person who had been doing the updates for people while the game is in development, so he just goes "I've turned in my work, you're just waiting on so-and-so to finish, have fun with the finished product, all!" and he gets offline for years and uses his half of the crowdfunding cash to pay his way through art school. As far as I am aware he is now just a big-boob patreon dude living happily, dunno if he has a good day job, never dug deeper.

The back half of the game has a lot of very, very bitter jokes from the writer (who sucks as a dude) about how because he didn't think ahead or get more work out of his partner or whatever, now every single NPC professor in the game is the same sprite, or there aren't enough NPCs, or...
