So here's the problem, freeper Jay Thomas. When a normal person - no less a normal politician - is confronted with something that they did in the past that people are criticizing, the correct thing to do is understand the criticism and then formulate a response that puts it to bed. If he'd said "Yeah, I was probably too hard on her" and then shut up, it'd have been over the next day. Instead he's been doubling down over and over and dragging it out now for four full days.

Freep at least seems to understand how bad this is.







This isn't even the ad on Machado. It's worth watching if you haven't seen it already.


For the record, the Machado tweets were at 5 AM local time. His tweets at 3 AM local time were on a completely different subject.
Factually false. He's talked about it every day this week. For example, the day after the debate he was interviewed on Fox & Friends (their morning show) and continued to defend calling her fat much to the visible horror of the hosts.

ICANN is enough of a bureaucratic mess already that moving them out from under government control can't possibly impact them in any actually meaningful way.

So why in the world am I posting a geektastic infodump in the freep thread?

Well, as part of the transition away from US government control, the administrative process for updating the root zone is no longer directly controlled by a US governmental agency. Instead that administrative process is controlled by ICANN and the multinational stakeholders that have always been involved because they actually own the physical equipment and connections that the internet already uses.

A conspiracy theory took hold that the US government was handing over control over the internet to an international body and/or the UN. That's bad enough, right? Well, given that the conspiracy nuts don't have the technical knowhow to understand what's actually happening, they have to make up facts like that all communication on the internet now has to be approved by a giant multinational globalist corporation run by Iran and Russia and China instead of the US.

And then Ted Cruz got involved, and a few state attorneys general and a lawsuit, and then a last minute ruling from a judge to ... ignore the objections of these nuts. Phew.

Anyway, there have been posts about "AMERICA IS GIVING CONTROL OF THE INTERNET TO FOREIGN DICTATORS!!!1" on freep many times a day for a few weeks now, but they get low amounts of traffic and I haven't looked at them to see if they're funny or useful or sad or in any way worth posting.

As I write this it's October 1 both UTC and on the East Coast, which means that the transition has occurred. Freep isn't taking this very well.


Oh my.


This isn't even internally consistent with the conspiracy!



I had the same thought on this. Just scrap it and start over, yet this time make it better.

Now on the other hand, let's give the idea a bit of consideration. If ICANN goes rogue, then yes, new root servers can be brought up to route around the problem without too much trouble, but imagine all the insane bureaucratic failures that'd have to occur for this kind of effort to even get started. We're talking about a failure to manage the internet from the very people that have helped coordinate, organize, and run it for decades upon decades. If we ever get to that point, something horribly wrong has happened and chances are that parallel competing root servers would be only the first of many things that would have to be brought up.

It's all Obama's fault anyway.











And judging from some of the blatant lies I have heard lately from people professing to be Christians. I am becoming less sure that is a bad idea.
