Ohhh yeahhhhh new month

I am going to continue playing Yakuza: Dead Souls and finishing the DLC case from the new Phoenix Wright game

Yakuza: DS doesn't have GREAT gameplay but it's fun enough blasting zombies in Korean Soap Opera Crime Land

Yeah the gameplay itself is fun when it isn't tied to a Bad Setpiece Torture Rack

I would say the price of a used disc is worth it just for Mercenaries

Welp OK I'm gonna do it; I'm gonna play all the Yakuza games (that have been localized)

First game; few hours in:

It's aged pretty well in terms of looks- it kind of cheats in the city scenes by putting this weird blurry filter over everything so you can't tell how low-poly things are in general but it winds up giving the game kind of a unique look.

Fighting gameplay is simple but good enough brawling and trying to set up Heat Moves has not gotten old yet

This is one with an English dub and it's bad in places but amusingly so. Doesn't really bother me.

You have this quasi-open-world design thing going on but in a good way where actual Things To Do are densely packed into a relatively small area that feels alive with activity. Lots of personality in the environment. The JRPG-style random thug encounters on the street have not become annoying yet- don't know how fast it loaded on the original hardware but I'm emulating off of an SSD so the load times are veeeery minor annoyances.

I'm really enjoying the game so far!

That's how over the course of three years you go from having a good laugh over people pledging thousands of dollars on non-existent space ships in a game that doesn't exist to assembling the entire timeline of the life of one man who works for the game's company while going on witch hunts to purge the totally existent and malicious spies from other forums trying to get in the way of you continuing to repeat that people arepledging thousands of dollars on non-existent space ships in a game that doesn't exist.

Yeah this seems about right- things are genuinely funny at first because people are spending thousands of dollars on spaceships that may or may not ever exist and insisting that THE GAME IS COMING OUT AND WILL BE THE BEST THING EVER and Gary Oldman looks like he's making a duckface in CG and oh man ha ha what dorky fake space videogame weirdo folly doth proceed in this sphere

Home sick all weekend so I made it through Yakuza 1. It gets a little more janky towards the end of the game with some of the enemy types (the kung-fu guys that flip all over the place and the guys with guns are just super annoying) but I'm glad I saw it through. I'm disappointed I didn't see more of the crazy eyepatch guy.

Also started Yakuza 2- the controls during fighting feel tighter somehow. It's also way easier to line up heat move since it seems to be a lot less specific about where you need to be to start one up.

Translation seems a lot more natural in this one as well- I guess it would have been nice if they would have given English voice acting another shot (it's really bad in the first game) but subs are fine for me.

Also not sure if it's the emulator or what but they seem to have really gone nuts with the Soap Opera Filter in this one in certain cutscenes

There doesn't seem to be any weird control gimmick; appears to be just a traditional console with the ability to do on-the-go stuff

I guess the one wrinkle is gonna be if there's any difference between the "console" and "handheld" versions of the games. Is all the hardware for the system contained in the little screen dealie or are devs going to need to consider two different hardware profiles when they're developing games?

I dunno the difference between whatever stouts, porters, ales, or any of that stuff

Ah Porters as well as Stouts are beers made with roasted malts, giving them a dark color and a mild-to-strong coffee/chocolate sorta character in addition to the regular ...beer-ey flavor

good stuff but people who only like domestics may be kinda put off by them as they're pretty different

I feel like wheat beers are good entry points into the Beer That Isn't Budweiser segment

in general things with higher ABVs will have stronger flavors (although this isn't always true) so try and pick out a lower one if you don't want to get slapped with malt and hops

Yep, more booze/volume.

You'll just have to ask what's a wheat beer and what isn't- I'm sure the bartender at a place like that would know. They've got a pretty mild flavor compared to a lot of other craft beers.

By no means limit yourself to them though- if you're feeling saucy try an IPA, a typically pretty-hoppy high-ish ABV beer that almost every brewery makes at least one of one of due to their popularity.

Or a Pale Ale, basically the little brother of the IPA in terms of hoppiness and typical ABV.
