A detail of the Quinn story that usually gets overlooked is, Baras has had that dude's back for years before you met him, saved his career and probably his life. They're friends, to the extent that either of them has friends. It's not just pragmatism that makes his choice difficult. He's caught in a war between his two most trusted allies, and obviously feels pretty messed up about it.

He's not my favorite companion in the game, but I don't hate the guy.

Trying to do all eight stories in a row may have been a mistake. A "so burned out I can't find the wherewithal to play during 250% XP" mistake.

I have run into this problem because of the one-two punch of the DvL event, where I leveled a shitload of new characters in a row, and then the new story chapter hitting right after that, which I burned through on my main character and then went "OK, this is a good stopping point, I can put this game down for a while." I basically have yet to pick it back up, aside from the occasional check-in about once every two weeks...

The super XP isn't that much of an incentive anymore, because XP is cheap, and the CXP thing just looks so grindy I never bothered with it at all. Haven't gotten any characters further than like rank 5. Now would be the time to do it, I guess, but... I have other games.

I'm ostensibly a roleplayer (been out of the scene a long time, honestly) and Strongholds are fantastic if you're into giving your characters a story. I set up Tatooine as a whole outlaw town that sprang up around an abandoned Hutt palace, where my character set up a semi-legitimate swoop garage to fix up old speeder bikes and sell 'em to gangsters and pirates. I don't do a whole lot with it but it's fun to run around in there, and sometimes new decorations come out that open up new ideas and it's lots of fun. Also I trade keys with my friends; one guy set up an elaborate casino on Nar Shaddaa that is really drat impressive.

Another element that's cool is that I make video game mods, and I like MMO's, but you can't usually mod MMO's... just for balance reasons if nothing else. With strongholds I get to have that creative outlet in a setting where I usually don't. So that's appealing in its own way. Also I'm an artist and I guess I like building stuff in general.

Functionally, they do have the advantage of being a spot you can instantly teleport to from anywhere, with fast access to mail, cargo, vendors, and GTN.

So I can totally see that Strongholds aren't for everybody, but I'm like THE target audience for that poo poo.

Light/dark choices do affect the outcomes of the class stories, but in fairly minor ways. Mostly you do the same stuff for different reasons, but sometimes the differences are interesting. Basically it's just enough to keep a repeat playthrough of a class story from being entirely boring.

The most significant light/dark plot differences are probably in the Sith Warrior story; it's the only one where you actually get a completely different version of a companion (almost zero shared dialogue, different appearance options) based on light/dark choices.

There are a few unique bits for neutral characters too. Again, the Warrior is a high point for this.

That's not really to say the Warrior story is the best or most complex all around, it just does the most with the alignment system. The Agent story has the most unique plot branches, but they're somewhat independent of light/dark. Honorable mention to Smuggler for having a really satisfying dark-side ending; light side smuggler is loving boring.

That's true, but all of those things are only affected by specific choices, right? Not alignment?

Like for example for the Warrior companion thing, you can theoretically max out your dark side alignment before you even meet Jaesa, but then make the appropriate "light side" dialogue choices and end up with the light side version of the companion, right? Or is she actually affected by how many dark/light points you have at that given time?

Choices impact things here and there definitely, but I was under the impression that nothing was actually tied to your dark/light alignment.

There ARE parts of that story where the dialogue is different based on your current alignment. Jaesa using her power to see your true nature, the reflection you meet on Tatooine razzing you if you're not evil enough. You're probably right in that you can still choose at any point to suddenly go against type and pick the other dialogue option, though.

I am a huge, huge Star Wars fan, but sometimes I wish they'd just made a Mass Effect MMO instead, so they would not be restrained by somebody else's canon and continuity and they could just do whatever the gently caress they wanted, without being in this damned if you do, damned if you don't situation with the audience.

No, you lose out on all of that, and you also have no history with the class companions when they come back. I ended up rerolling my old instant 60 character as a level 1 because it was kind of depressing having no past. Leveling up is so fast anyway, it's just not worth it.

Basically you should hold onto that boost for when you want a high-level character for some functional reason, and don't care about titles or story.

They've always had some facial hair options, it's just mixed in with the cybernetics options and not on a separate slider, and a little limited compared to some other races. My friend made a cross-faction "undercover" version of one of his characters and found an option that's the same cyborg parts plus a big cheesy mustache, and we all had a good laugh about that.

Some races straight-up do not get any facial hair at all, like Mirialans, and that has always bummed me out. I want my old green Jedi to have a mustache...

Here's a question: Which class has a Dark Side path that is the least stupid and cartoonishly evil? So many of the choices seem dumb and can forget consequences. Like it'll be Light to save someone and Dark to kill them, even though saving them leads to them being brutally tortured for information. So I can hurt the war effort and immediately kill a person and be Dark, but I can keep them alive to suffer for months and then be paraded around and executed and that's Light. Sometimes they remember though, so it'll be Light to kill some robots with tortured human brains inside them, but Dark to send them back to the Empire to keep serving. Is there any story that is Dark, but more of a stone bastard rather than a giggling sociopath?

I'll always recommend dark side smuggler. Light side is kind of boring, you just run errands for the Republic for half of it. Dark side smuggler unleashes a lot of righteous vengeance on the road to building a criminal empire. The ending is a lot more satisfying.

Naming the speeder piloting as "character perks" has me a bit worried that it's going to be an annoyingly huge credit (or hutt bux) sink, after they finally got rid of the pain-in-the-rear end training costs of the old piloting skills...
(Edit: The right way to do it would be the same as the old skills... free training at the appropriate level, purchasable as perks at lower levels.)

I haven't touched starfighter in years, even though it was fun, because it was such a grind. It sounds like they're putting some effort into fixing that, which is awesome news.

This is also something I've repeated many times but: Dark side smuggler is significantly better. Light side smuggler is just an errand boy for the Republic and ends with a fizzle. Dark side smuggler is taking sweet revenge on every fool who ever crossed you and slowly building a criminal empire. The difference in quality is pretty significant.

I think Bounty Hunter might be divisive because it's not as much of a power fantasy as most others... you really do get kicked around a lot. But it's a great scrappy underdog story in my opinion. It's way more Firefly than Star Wars. It's you and your ragtag group of friends against the whole galaxy, just trying to make a space buck and live another day. Also I think the story works a lot better on every level if you keep Mako with you the whole time. Whether you're a male character playing the love story, or a female character palling around with your best friend, Mako and the bounty hunter get a lot of good scenes together.

Nerd Of Prey

The warrior has a section where they have to assign members of their team to carry out different parts of a mission, and you'll have varying degrees of success depending on who is assigned to what job. The trooper should have had a lot more scenes like that, since you're supposed to be leading a squad.

The male bounty hunter may have the best voice combined with the least reliable performance. For the original game, he's a super hard-rear end that sounds like he's been smoking since birth and it's perfect. However, in some of the free expansion-y content, he'll sneak in a heavy lisp where he apparently gave no shits about his delivery. From what I hear, he's back to normal with the paid/real expansions, although I can't say for sure since I've only played them on other characters. It's hilariously weird and really hard to miss, so I'd say his quality depends on where in the story you happen to be.

I've been playing vigilance guardian (AKA vengeance juggernaut) since beta and I could never find another class or spec that I had as much fun with. To me it's about the "bag of tricks," they get so many cool situational skills, it gives you a great sense of control over a fight. Lots of interrupts, and you can reposition yourself or your foes pretty fast by leaping and pushing, especially once you get a lot of skill points to shorten your cooldowns. The rotation only really matters if you're doing tough group content, otherwise you have a lot of freedom to gently caress around and improvise. Admittedly this could all have a lot to do with my crazy level of familiarity with the spec after years and years of playing it, but it's super fun.

I will say that the most fun I ever had in PvP specifically was playing tank spec in low-level PvP. Nobody expects a tank in low level matches. I was just piling up the trophies in there. Good times. I also had somebody a good five levels above me try to take out my juggernaut tank on Tatooine, and I absolutely crushed him.

What's funny is, before the game released, I was really into the concept of a Jedi character who focused on the Force, so I was going to have a consular as my main. But it turned out guardians get the most fun Force powers. Nothing is more satisfying than the push. I remember some guy tried to gank me on Makeb once and I just casually flung him off the nearest cliff.

Of course I also misjudged an angle once and hurled an enemy across my own goal line in huttball... :sweatdrop:

I think, like most classes, it will always play better if you stick more to a character concept than an alignment. But the smuggler story is way better if you stick to the dark side choices when it's a major plot point, particularly in the later chapters.

I'll always ride for smuggler chapter 1 as the best story content in the game. It's easily got the best villain in the whole game. He's probably in the running for best villain in A video game if you ask me. You LOVE to hate that guy, and the conflict is so multilayered and personal. And then the whole Risha / Nok Drayen storyline is really interesting, and there are so many unique supporting characters with real personalities, like the overbearing customs agent on Taris. And it stays funny the whole time!

It takes a nosedive when you wrap up all that and get sucked into the Empire/Republic conflict, and basically that's when you should go full-bore dark side on the story choices and be a crime boss instead of an errand boy. At least you get a fun ending out of it that way.

I'll always have a soft spot for the female smuggler voice, because it was one of the first characters I played and her line readings are so quirky. She plays it with a cowgirl twang and an undercurrent of crazy, and if you are playing a ruthless criminal, it works great. But I will agree that storywise you're better off with the guy. (It is always fun riling up Corso by flirting with other dudes though.)

Risha really is badass. I never really thought about it, but not only does she buck the trend of female romance options always being young subordinates who you completely creep on, she's your freakin' boss for half the game. She's dragging you along on HER adventure.

Thanks for the heads-up about this; I got about 20 command levels each for two of my characters yesterday.

I also found out after some trial and error, not every daily mission on every planet gives you the crazy bonuses, but you can tell at a glance; when you mouse over the mission before accepting it, it will list the CXP rewards and those numbers are in fact accurate. It also shows up correctly in your quest log. This allows you to very quickly figure out what's worth doing on any given planet.

Out of all the daily areas I tried, Yavin 4 gave the greatest amount of total CXP, roughly equivalent to two other planets' dailies. Be sure to do all the bonuses there too!
Note about Yavin: One of the quests causes a bug where you can no longer use mounts/speeders on the planet, which is super annoying, but if you port to your stronghold and back really quick, it fixes it.

In my experience, this type of thing is not likely to be hit with rollbacks. What they consider to be an exploit is usually something a player wouldn't ordinarily do, like continuously buy and sell the same item when there's some sort of credit glitch, or something else where it's obvious people figured out a way to cheat by doing something unusual.

What we're dealing with here is people getting a little extra benefit by playing the game 100% as intended, i.e. doing quests. It would be really weird for anybody to decide that simply doing quests is cheating. When things like this have happened before (and they have happened before) they have always let it slide.
