“The personal, as everyone’s so loving fond of saying, is political. So if some idiot politician, some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, take it personally. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here – it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft-. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide from under it with a wink and a grin. If you want justice, you will have to claw it from them. Make it personal. Do as much damage as you can. Get your message across. That way, you stand a better chance of being taken seriously next time. Of being considered dangerous. And make no mistake about this: being taken seriously, being considered dangerous marks the difference - the only difference in their eyes - between players and little people. Players they will make deals with. Little people they liquidate. And time and again they cream your liquidation, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that it’s just business, it’s politics, it’s the way of the world, it’s a tough life and that it’s nothing personal. Well, gently caress them. Make it personal.”

Here's the thing.

I don't like the word "protest" for this. I prefer the word "demonstration." We are "demonstrating" that we can put people into the streets. You haven't even done anything yet and I can put 1k people on the streets of LA. You haven't even taken the Oath yet, and we have 1 million people in DC letting you know one thing. Do not. gently caress. With us.

As far as heads getting cracked...sorry, but pushing the state security forces into an over-reaction is also kind of the point. If you're gonna go out, don't count on coming back. You're putting your life on the line to prove a point, so if that point isn't worth getting arrested, hurt, or killed, then stay home.

Oiled and Ready posted:

Not gonna touch the nuclear war thing besides laughing at the idea an elected civilian can actually just launch the nukes if the military disagreed, we had a president with Alzheimer's for God's sakes.

Ok. So here's the thing about that dude. While it is extremely unlikely that Trump is going to wake up from a bad dream in a peaceful world and launch the nukes without the VERY SHORT (remember that) chain between him and the guys that actually push the buttons.

As far as the button-pushers go, forget it. They drill for this poo poo to make sure that the button by God gets loving pushed. A lot of these guys (silo commanders/nuke sub skippers) are both isolated and trained/conditioned to push the button when they get the order. If there's a drill (that you don't know is a drill) and you don't push the button, you are losing your command. I've known some high-ranking officers (and served on some nuke subs FWIW) and they are exactly the sort of steady person that will ABSOLUTELY push that button if so ordered.

So, let's get away from the "bad dream/Kim Jong Un made fun of his hair" scenario. There are two ways that DJT could gently caress up with the nuclear arsenal.

Fast: We are in a very tense international situation and are at DEFCON 2. At this point we are close to pulling the trigger and we are ready to go to war in 6 hours. DJT misreads something (he is THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN MAKE THIS CALL) and we go to DEFCON 1. Aka "Cocked Pistol." At this point, there is one person, generally a comparatively low-ranked officer in between the Tweetmeister and the GO order. This is why "temperament" got pounded on so hard in the election. This is a situation where you better have a clear head and nerves of steel. I am...unimpressed with this aspect of our CinC(elect).

Slow. Honestly, this bugs me a lot too, given the way DJT seems keen on trampling norms. At present, although they have been developed, there is no current standard for using a TACTICAL nuclear device in US warfare, and we have always taken the position that a nuke is a nuke is a nuke and using a 1kt to clear out a mountain stronghold and using a 10mt to vaporize downtown Islamabad are EQUALLY in deserving of overwhelming, unilateral response. I can easily envision DJT authorizing a change in the RoE that would allow a theater commander to use one. This would open the gates of Hell. It would no longer be unthinkable to use these devices in a "limited" fashion, and that, boys and girls, would be the ballgame. If not right away, within 20 years.

TL/DR: Nothing is keeping us safe from DJT killing the world with nukes.

What's the impediment to developing one? Nothing technical for certain? I know there have been a number of War College papers written about the use of tactical nuclear weapons in theater.

any way I could talk u into making a thread about that, with that as the OP?

because drat thats like, extremely my poo poo.

I am a long way from an expert on the subject, and I was a peon aboard the majesty that is our National nuclear deterrent.

I was mostly making the point in response to O&R that the system is DESIGNED to not have a bunch of decision-makers between "GO" and "LAUNCH." If POTUS says GO, then it is gonna happen unless something goes catastrophically wrong. The system is set up so that people can't second-guess the man making the decisions.

For additional fun, POTUS can send that authority down the chain. So, say we were in a conventional conflict with PRC over Taiwan. POTUS could, in the interest of shaving minutes or seconds off our response time, give the theater commander launch authority.

Sweet dreams, motherfuckers.

The phrase you're looking for is "Area Denial Weapon." It has the dual purpose of blowing the poo poo out of a target, and keeping an unprotected force from maneuvering through it.

I wouldn't know, but I just bet that there is a DOD manual establishing the "safe" rate of travel for, say, a Bradley Fighting Vehicle with personnel in PPE, to traverse a current "hot zone" with "minimal adverse effects to personnel and equipment." It's just the way these people THINK!
