anime was right posted:

democrats: "republicare will kill millions of people either directly or indirectly. medicare for all will save millions of lives and be cheaper" repeat x infinity right now.

yea this is really all they have to say about the ahca over and over again

im listening to a really interesting ted talk (lol i know) about what makes homo sapiens different hisgorically and evolutionarily from other higher order primates, and the author's contention is that we uniquely have the ability to tell eachother stories. Thagt in turn allows us to create ideas, narratives, religions, concepts for larger and larger groups to rally around.

He believes that the reaction against globalism and neoliberalism is because there is no broader vision articulated as a part of it, that its proponents have lost the thread of why that unites large groups of himans in a shared goal. As a species we are now dealing with a global economy and global climate and global resources, but approaching it all on national scales. This is why climate change deniers are almost always nationalists, because nationalism explicitly does not have a eay to deal with a global problem, so thsy deny its existemce entirely.

dont agree wjth everything he is saying, but thw thrust of his argument that a globally interconnected world needs a global vision (and government) to survive is well made

how does what i said apply to dems: one of their failed slogans of 2016 was "america is already great", a terrible, explicitly rractionary one lol

not just a lack of vision, a lack od vision for thr country so profound the slogan only evem makes sense when used in contrast with their opponent's message

One would think with numbers like that, Democratic politicians would be falling all over themselves to be associated with Sanders, especially considering the party as a whole is more unpopular than the Republicans and even Donald Trump right now. Yet instead of embracing his message, the establishment wing of the party continues to resist him at almost every turn, and they seem insistent that they don’t have to change their ways to gain back the support of huge swaths of the country.

quote:

Sanders’ effect on Trump voters can be seen in a gripping town hall this week that MSNBC’s Chris Hayes hosted with him in West Virginia – often referred to as “Trump country” – where the crowd ended up giving him a rousing ovation after he talked about healthcare being a right of all people and that we are the only industrialized nation in the world who doesn’t provide healthcare as a right to all its people.

quote:

But hand wringing by Democratic officials over 2018 candidates is really just the latest example: the establishment wing of the party aggressively ran another opponent against Keith Ellison, Sanders’ choice to run the Democratic National Committee, seemingly with the primary motivation to keep the party away from Sanders’ influence.

They’ve steadfastly refused to take giant corporations head on in the public sphere and wouldn’t even return to an Obama-era rule that banned lobbyist money from funding the DNC that was rescinded last year. And despite the broad popularity of the government guaranteeing health care for everyone, they still have not made any push for a Medicare-for-all plan that Sanders has long called for as a rebuttal to Republicans’ attempt to dismantle Obamacare.

quote:

As Politico reported on the Democrats’ post-Trump strategy in February, “Democratic aides say they will eventually shift to a positive economic message that Rust Belt Democrats can run on”. However: “For now, aides say, the focus is on slaying the giant and proving to the voters who sent Trump into the White House why his policies will fail.”

In other words, they’re doubling down on the exact same failing strategy that Clinton used in the final months of the campaign. Sanders himself put it this way in his usual blunt style in an interview with New York magazine this week – when asked about whether the Democrats can adapt to the political reality, he said: “There are some people in the Democratic Party who want to maintain the status quo. They would rather go down with the Titanic so long as they have first-class seats.”

lmebo the dems learned nothing and will continue to lose elections

listen, single payer healthcare will never, ever, ever come to pass, I'm not a fan of a $15 minimum wage, and furthermore,

Idk at this point it would be great for it to be a commoj thing to acknowledge hillary was a bad candidate who ran a bad campaign based on assumptions that this would be a regular cycle when it was clear that it was anything but, and maybe we should critically examine and take some lessons from that.

sadly nobody in the broader dnc party apparatus seems capable of saying "yeah we relied too much on oir flawed Hadoop polling and based too many strategies on the flawed assumptions it generated", instead its Comey, misogyny, and russians all the way down. Just a lil contrition. Thats all.

Because it's the first special election after a DNC chair election in which all candidates promised to support state parties aggressively. It's about showing the base that you meant it and showing the flag in some of these high-profile elections. Even a pittance would avoid the stories about the DNC abandoning the race. An investment that would have paid off in the long run.

Concerned Citizen posted:

i mean yes, if the purpose of a symbolic gesture is to appease people, and it fails to do so, then it is best not to do the symbolic gesture because money is actually valuable. it's the elections equivalent of gifting someone a "i'm with stupid" shirt - sure, you gave a gift but it was kind of poo poo. literally no one is gonna praise the dccc for buying a $20k mailer in a red district, for good reason.

if you are trying to flip the seat, then spend enough money to flip the seat. if you aren't trying to flip the seat, then you are spending something on nothing.

Kids, you didnt try at all, and failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.
