Hello.
The Democratic Party has been circling the drain and dying for a long time. But most of us were all just too busy stuffing our heads up our asses and huffing our own farts to realize it.

W hosed up, poo poo was a mess and Democrats were able to take back the House and Senate in 2006.

In 2008 Obama DOMINATED. Democrats secured their hold on the Senate and made gains in the House but we, unfortunately, did not get the filibuster proof majority we needed in the House for various reasons.

This looks good. This is super good and promising for the Democrats but we have to look beyond the surface because while we were making gains on the federal level we were losing ground locally and losing hard.

We lost governors. We lost many various other seats in local governments. Republican-friendly local legislators built an environment beneficial to Republicans while we rested on our laurels.

We should have rallied behind Obama and pushed lefter. But we got complacent meanwhile the Republicans had their own movement. They let their rage and displeasure with the election manifest behind the Tea Party movement. They rallied a disheartened and devastated base behind the cause of a more right-leaning party. The Republicans looked at a popular rejection of right wing conservatism and not only did they not balk but they said, "gently caress it, let's go righter!"

Local governments controlled by conservatives passed extensive Voter ID laws and gerrymandered loving everything. And federally Republicans did everything they could to just endlessly obstruct and block loving everything. They refused to work with Obama and they refused to compromise and find common ground.

Compare to now where Elizabeth Warren (I used to adore her, now I'm losing so much respect for her) and many others are saying they're willing to work with President Trump. Like, I know we've been crushed out of every branch of government and we do not have the power Republicans had when they were kind of in our position but even when we had them on the ropes we still opted to be the better person, respect them, and tried to play nice and all that got us is progressively more marginalized. The Republicans did not reciprocate, they spat in our loving faces. Now we are a toothless minority of a minority and we most likely can't do poo poo but Jesus loving christ gently caress us.

Mercy and kindness really is weakness.

Anyway, in 2010 Republicans rallied around their Tea Party movement, bolstered by new, young, fresh and more conservative blood and aided by the gerrymandering, voter suppression, and naturally low Democratic turn out Tea Party candidates dominated and Democrats failed to get the numbers they needed to hold the line. We lost the House and were just barely clinging to the Senate. And we lost more locally. It was the census year, lines were redrawn and gerrymandering reigned supreme.

The new Republican House majority continued to obstruct and block loving everything. We couldn't do poo poo.

In 2012 we lost the Senate and we lost more locally and unlike Democrats, who finally accepted W's Supreme Court Nominee after a bit of bullshit. The Republicans just completely blocked Obama's Supreme Court Nominees for loving ever. Sure we got one through (I think) but we're not getting the other one. Especially not now that they know they won the election and can get a SCJ they like.

So yeah, we got played. We played nice and tried to be fair and decent. The belief and understanding was that if we treated them with respect they would return the favor. They did not, so while we were being the Nice Guy Republicans plotted against us, spat in our faces, and stabbed us in the back. We got hosed.

It got this way because hardly anybody, especially Democrats, gives a poo poo about local elections. They don't bother to show up and vote but Republicans do. Because of voter apathy in the local scene we got pushed out and Republicans got to set the rules.

And because we didn't show up enough in mid term elections they got the House and the Senate back.

And because not enough of us got out to vote in the general election Trump won and they held and gained ground in the Senate.

So, if we're going to come back from this we gotta do what the Republicans did in 2008. We gotta start a movement. We have to create our own version of the Tea Party and we've got to rally behind it.

We've got to mobilize and vote in huge numbers in EVERY election. We have to vote Democrats into local positions and if there are no Democrats running for local positions people among us have to become candidates themselves and run in local elections.

And we have to win. We have to get out in enough numbers and climb out of this pit and we have to win. But now the voters are so apathetic and suppressed and the districts are so gerrymandered that it is going to be a huge loving uphill climb.

And we probably have to find a way to appeal to and win back working and middle class whites.

And good loving luck getting Democrats to get out and vote and loving care. Even now, in the height of our despair, the 49% of people who did not vote are just loving shrugging their shoulders and god loving drat it gently caress us.

It was a nice ride everyone.
RIP.

HOLY loving poo poo STOP. You don't understand. You think it is easy to just pack up and leave and go where the grass is greener because that is probably what you did and it was easy for you. But you are not them. You do not know their situation. Their whole life is/was in that lovely dying town. Their whole community. Their friends are there, their neighbors are there, their community is there, their churches/places of worship are there. They have spent decades being a part of this city. I am sure a not insignificant sum of them are living in houses that have been in their families for generations. Their schools are there, their entire history is in that town. They had their first date there, lost their virginity there, got married, started a family, raised a family there. And you would just tell them to pack up and move? To leave everything behind? It's not so easy for them. Lima Ohio is not loving Centralia Pennsylvania. You see a people clinging to the past and dying in obscurity who need to move on for their own sakes. But these people see it as abandoning their history and their way of life.

Even if we were able to, by some miracle, move an entire community to a better location you assume they'll be able to integrate. To qualify and get the jobs that are available. To adapt. Maybe they would, but they might not.

On paper it looks good to consolidate the spread out population into bigger cities. More people = more demand and more demand = more jobs etc etc. But it doesn't always work like that. The demand is already in these cities and no one is investing. Also, you're forgetting/neglecting the human element. You're taking the people out of the picture and you are ignoring their wants. You come swooping in thinking you know what's best for them but you've already marginalized them. You are failing to see them as people. If you come charging in as the great savior of suffering whites and forcibly relocate them they are not going to look at you favorably. They are gonna see you as some loving rear end in a top hat making them leave their homes. They'd probably loving riot. These struggling people already justifiably believe their way of life is under attack and you wanna do this? Jesus loving christ.

I like the plan to plop down government run factories that make stuff in as many dying piece of poo poo towns as we can idea better. If the jobs are there people from surrounding areas might actually self consolidate for their own benefit rather than being forced by us and resenting it. And if we go full on FDR and lock/fix housing prices so they don't start getting ridiculously expensive once the area gets prosperous and there's a high demand to be there we can make sure the people who really need to be there can still afford to.

Racism and avoiding the south etc.

Woah drat. I am a cis bisexual disabled white woman who grew up in poverty but even I don't know what it is like to be an easily identified, and thus discrimated against and targeted, minority. But all your life you have probably been told to be careful and be wary. I have no doubts that you have experienced many situations where you have been actively discrimated against. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to see this country embolden and legitimize hatred, intolerance and fear the way it has this election. I imagine you feel quite rejected and unwanted. But I'm making a lot of assumptions.

Racism is a serious problem in this country and we need to talk about it. And we cannot ignore that our future President is a person who campaigned on racism and that we, as a country, accepted that. This is not meant to imply that all Trump supporters are racist. But it is a factual statement. Trump was endorced by racists and supported by racists and people supported him and voted for him. Again, this does not make them racists. But it is still troubling that they did not find his racism objectionable enough to vote differently.

But as it has been said, most of these people are not effected by racism and they were desperate and suffering and Trump promised them salvation. They were probably largely not concerned with the consequences of their decision (the emboldening and legitimization of racism) because what was foremost in their mind was their own struggles. It is hard to consider and support the suffering of others when you yourself are suffering.

I have come to realize that a person can be a "good person" and still have horrible beliefs. They don't go out of their way to commit hate crimes but they /believe/ in stereotypes and prejudices. They are influenced by rhetoric and agendas that appeal and pander to their fear and hatred. They support candidates and legislation that unfairly targets minorities. They go about their lives being good spouses, providers, parents, workers, worshippers, etc never actively hurting anyone and ignorant of the effects the policies they and their candidates push and support continue have on the underprivileged and how they continue to perpetuate a system of discrimination on an institutional level.

And yes, by supporting Trump they are championing his beliefs and even if they are merely one of the proclaimed apathetic supporters that were sold on his policies and promises they are still perpetuating bigotry.

But again, it's not about you it's about them. It's about their wants and their needs and while for some it was personal for many it was simply survival. Hillary told them the truth, that coal was dead and manufacturing was dying. That they'd have to change and adapt and work. Trump lied to them and told him he could bring coal back and bring manufacturing back and bring them prosperity. And it didn't matter that he is racist, and it didn't matter that he could not actually do it. They needed saved. Democrats have been promising suffering whites salvation for years and largely failed to deliver. Trump is just doing the same drat thing.

And dismissing all Trump supporters as a bunch of racists and bigots is not doing you any favors. It is being elitist. You are not seeing them as people and you are not listening to their problems. Just because some of them might be racists and bigots does not mean they all are or that they are unworthy of help or sympathy. Where is all our much lauded liberal tolerance when it comes to people we disagree with? We are dehumanizing them and not bothering to even get to know them and just writing them off as a whole and isn't that what they are doing to minorities? We should be reaching out to them and helping them.

Also, calling someone a racist/bigot does not stop them from being racist or bigoted. The best way to combat racism and bigotry is to integrate with them and reach out to them. Because many of them are very isolated. Once they begin personally knowing minorities as people it becomes much more difficult for them to dehumanize and dismiss them.

Of course, it is not a minority's job to fix white people. But that doesn't change the fact that people who grow up in areas with greater diversity and interaction are statistically less likely to be racist/bigoted.

But yeah, I can understand not wanting to muck about with people you feel don't even see you as a person and who you feel threatened and intimidated by. You have no obligation to put yourself out there.

Just, try not to be as equally consumed by hate. Don't be reduced to their level. These are still people and I believe most of them can be reasoned with.

But, I'm a white person and I hardly know poo poo about this. I definitely am not intending to excuse racism in this post, racism is inexcusable. I just don't like how liberals have been propping ourselves up and spitting down on people who are suffering and lashing out. Especially when liberals have our own problems with racism. We are not immune.

In short, I'm a loving idealistic piece of poo poo.

Tim Kaine wasn't doing anything and he was boring but popular so... yeah. Double down on the boring to protect the few seats in the Senate they still hold.

Whether this is just a cover and Hillary just loving hated the idea of socialists or near socialists being involved is probably not worth debating since she took 90% of Bernie's platform and made it her own. Guns!

I still remember all the times my sexist alcoholic chain-smoking father took me out to the gun range and let me and my brothers shoot his guns. It was actually quite fun and it helped me get over the gender socialized shyness and passive permissiveness that is beaten into many girls. I also liked the smell of gun powder and was a good shot! One time one of my father's friends showed up with an old black powder rifle and I managed to convince him to let me shoot it. It had intense recoil and I think it might have fractured my collar bone because I was in pretty intense pain and it was bruised, tender and sore for weeks. I'll never know though, because dad begged and bribed me not to tell my mom (I wasn't gonna anyway) and not to go to the hospital because he didn't want to get in trouble and it healed naturally on its own and I recovered.

Later he taught me how to shoot a bow and we would go out hunting and I actually killed a deer once (it was 5 points I think? It has been a long time.) And he taught me how to skin it. (I still remember how and it's come up a few times but that's a story for another time.)

Anyway, he never taught us gun safety. One of his friends did and warned us that they were dangerous and not toys and could hurt or kill people. And going to the range and hanging out with all these old white guys had me pick up a lot of their mannerisms. I became more brazen, shameless, and outgoing. My sexist dad letting me get involved in a "guy thing" was probably a huge influence on what made me such a crass smart rear end tom boy.

And that is the story of how my sexist father, who endlessly quoted bible scripture at me about how women need to shut up and be obedient to men and who was bullied by his friends into letting his bored daughter, who he was sidelining and neglecting, participate in guy stuff with her brothers, turned me into a raving bisexual feminist. Thanks guns!

So yeah, guns are alright. And we should all be allowed to arm ourselves as well as we can in case we need to have an uprising or something. But I also don't think people who are going to use guns for the wrong reasons should have them. I just don't think there's an effective way to determine who is a safe, responsible gun owner vs someone who is a potential spree shooter. And as someone who has a lot of significant mental health issues (the source of my earlier mentioned disability) I do not like the idea of profiling and denying the mentally ill access to guns as they were good for me and the mentally ill have a right to protect themselves too.

Wow, I'm a loving terrible Democrat. :v:

Hey I wanted to thank you for sticking with this thread, and I really hope others from the campaign are watching this thread and taking notes.

These people just want their lives back. They used to go to work, bond with their co-workers, bitch about their managers, and spend 8 hours a day doing something that was useful. Then they went home to their house and their wives and their kids and felt good about putting in a full day's work. They turned on the TV, maybe cracked open a beer, and had conversations about being able to take that vacation in a few years, or maybe this year we'll be able to redo the bathroom. Yeah maybe they weren't the smartest person in the world or "management material" or whatever the gently caress people judged them by, but they woke up every morning, put their pants on, and showed up to work 2 minutes early to Do Something that needed to be done. They worked hard and were loyal and were proud of it.

Sending these people a check in the mail might keep them from literally dying, but it won't Let Them Live. These people want want to go Do Something. They want to be useful. They want to have co-workers they can laugh with and managers to bitch about. They want to count down the days until that vacation. They want to feel proud again.

The Democratic Party switches between ignoring these people and sneering at them for their silly, backward, uneducated ways. The GOP tells them "We can't fix this but I swear those idiots broke it, and I'll go punch 'em in the nose for ya!" Maybe 10 years ago when the factory closed down they weren't susceptible to that message, but after 10 years of no jobs and watching their town fall apart and their buddy's suicide and the divorce and their kids fleeing for the loving hills they're god drat angry. And you know what? They have every loving right to be angry, because they were loyal and they worked hard and in exchange the capitalist class sold them the gently caress out so some loving CFO could watch his loving numbers tick up a hair.

We can 100% offer solutions to this as a party without sacrificing a single god drat thing. We can build green energy factories in these counties. We can build research centers in these counties. We can build healthcare centers in these counties. Take whatever liberal priority you can think of and we can build something here to help fix things nationally and help these people locally.

People are saying we just need to bump this group or that group's turnout levels back to Obama levels. Great! I do too! But here is something we can do in addition to that! Here is something that helps people who have been savaged by the capitalist class and helps fight global warming or helps advance research or helps improve healthcare in this county. Why the gently caress wouldn't we want to do this?

Amen.
Jesus loving christ capitalism.
We are fed thus crock of poo poo that if we work hard and do a good job we will be rewarded. That we can't accept help or free hand outs because needing help and charity is weak and a sign of failure. We are told we must provide for ourselves and if our situation is poo poo we have to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. But all that work hard and don't complain bootstraps bullshit did is create a labor class that was ripe for exploitation. That got underpaid for their work. And when their needs and costs started cutting into profit margins these people's loyalties were not rewarded. They were thrown to the loving wolves and abandoned while the companies they had loyally worked at for decades hosed off to China, or India, or Vietnam or Bangladesh or wherever so that they could make a bigger profit for themselves.

And Democrats told them they would help then and kept them on the line and strung them along and never really loving delivered and gently caress us. Now Trump is doing the same. And Trump is right to blame the establishment and blame the Democrats. But he's not right about blaming the Mexicans and the Muslims. They should not be angry at the people who are just as much victims of this flawed system as they are. This crab bucketing, this divisive tactic of divide and conquer is what is keeping Americans from creating real change. We're too busy squabbling and hating each other to focus on the people really at fault which is the rich elites, the corporations and our bought politicians who sold us out for their own profit and continue to bleed us dry.

We were so worried about corporate interests controlling the government but they always have and by voting in Trump we have handed the government over to corporate interests completely.

Hawkish Democrats getting baited into wars.

*breaks out her tinfoil hat and places it on her head*
Hello.

Once upon a time I ran a D&D 3.5 campaign where the PCs were sent on quests and missions and such by the king of a kingdom. Seems simple enough.

He sent them out to slay a local goblin encampment.
He sent them out to take out a den of bandits who were disrupting the trade routes
He convinced them to kill off a powerful group in one of the neighboring cities by feeding them a ton of lies and propaganda that they believed without question.
Eventually they got pretty high level and he was still sending them out to do random clean up and whatnot. When they stopped getting experience for the low level encounters the party sorcerer finally got frustrated and asked why the king did not just send his military to dispose of the skeletons in the graveyard

The king bluntly told them that he had no military. He had strong alliances with all the neighboring kingdoms through the power of trade and marriage arrangements. Having a standing military around would just worry his neighbors who would make a bigger military and then their neighbors would make an even bigger military which he would have to respond to with his own bigger military and so on. It was much cheaper and more efficient to simply hire a group of adventurers to handle this stuff than invest in a standing military which he would then have to keep happy and fed or they might depose him. The money he saved was used to keep his alliances strong and make himself insanely wealthy. The party got fed up and left to find higher level encounters and the king hired a bard to spread the message for his dire need for adventurers.

The moral of this story. When you invest a lot of money into something (and we invest a lot of money into our military) you wanna get your money's worth. So we throw our huge over funded military around willy-nilly playing world police because that money has gotta go somewhere. It helps that the military contractors who have plants that make jobs in states pay big money to their campaigns and make big money making things to supply the military even when the military itself has said it does not need all this stuff. Military bases in states have their own microcosm of car dealerships and diners and bars surrounding them and those bases and the soldiers within can often be the only ecomony in that area. The only thing keeping people employed and creating demand. You can see why there is a lot of resistance to closing bases. Finally, starting a war makes the military contractors very rich and if it's in a lovely oil rich country it makes the oil executives very rich. Which makes their donations to the campaigns of politicians very generous.

I really wish we had the numbers to filibuster in the House but we do not and it will probably be a long time before we do.

It's a shame. Because we could bring Keith Ellison in to explain to Republicans what sharia law really is. I mean, they wouldn't listen and wouldn't care and it would change no minds or do anything but it would be cathartic.

It just seems to me that questioning the system is going to be a much easier sell than questioning the presidency. Liberals are still obsessed with decorum. You could see it in the way Clinton and Obama called for everyone to unify under Trump, as if they weren't effectively the leading voices of the opposition party. Most of the liberals are going to fall in line too, because they think if you follow the rules then you're legitimate by default. The rules were the problem.

This is one of the things that really makes me sour by the way. That liberals fall in line, are more willing to cooperate, and try to play nice with others. When Democrats controlled the House and Senate at the end of the Bush years we not only worked with Republicans and let then pass legislation but we, after a bit of bullshit on our end, actually accepted his Supreme Court Justice nominee.

If we had sat on that nominee and just rejected it forever like the Republicans are doing now we could have given a liberal SCJ to Obama and the Voting Rights Act might have not been gutted. Instead we decided to be the better man and do our job and play nice and our maturity was not reciprocated. When the Republicans got the House back they made no attempts to work with Democrats. They just blocked everything. Shaming them and pointing it out and complaining about it was just met with sneers and declarations that their refusal to negotiate was not them being assholes but because Obama was weak and couldn't lead. loving jackasses.

Now they're gonna stack the courts with conservative pro-business jerks and THAT COULD HAVE BEEN US.

We could have installed someone liberal instead of Alito. We didn't need to capitulate. The economy was in shambles, we knew we were gonna win the election. Why the gently caress, why the gently caress did we give them Alito?

We could have had Ginsburg, Kagan, Sotomayor and [Insert liberal judge here]. We could have had a near-majority! We could have had a chance of protecting the Voting Rights Act!

But instead we played by the rules and our respect and cooperation was met with belligerence. The Republicans didn't care about being fair, their districts were safe as gently caress, there would be no consequences for just being jackasses. We got played.

gently caress us. gently caress us forever for being such beta cucks.

Democrats had their chance in the 2008 congress. They had gigantic almost super-majorities in both the house and senate and the presidency. They proceeded to use this overwhelming mandate for change and an economic crisis to be what ralph nader predicted: corporate stooges. They spent their 'political capital' licking the boot of wall st and the health and pharma corporations.

There are dnc sycophants that will now come out of the woodwork and cry about the majority in congress not being that big and that those darned republicans were just so obstructionist. This is just so loving ridiculous it boggles my mind.

Look at this poo poo:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/111th_United_States_Congress
Party standings in the Senate for most of this Congress
57 Democrats
2 Independents, caucusing with Democrats
41 Republicans

Final party distribution in the House of Representatives
Democratic Party: 255 members.
Republican Party: 179 members.

Democrats had ~58% voting share in both chambers.

Democrat sycophants are literally arguing that democrats can't do anything meaningful and will roll over and die and just be corporate stooges unless they get over 60% in both houses. It's loving incredulous.

Democrats deserved this loss.

No. It's not. Look, the Democrats loving suck. They are corporate shills selling out to the highest bidder. They are incompetent and short sighted. They lost a huge majority in 2008 practically overnight.

But don't pretend they didn't need 60% to do anything. Republicans publicly swore they would filibuster and block everything. They gloated about it. It was their loving plan. There are recordings of Mitch McConnell straight up saying, "Yeah we're just not gonna let them do poo poo."

There is no way to shut down a filibuster other than having enough votes to get the law on the floor.

Democrats COULD have done something if Republicans would have worked with them but they filibustered and refused.

If they had gotten 60% would they have done anything progressive? Probably not. They are all in the loving pockets of the banks/wall street/big pharma/etc pick your loving poison.

But Republicans were dead set and dedicated to not giving them a chance to do anything. And that is simply a fact.

What country are you from? It's understandable you might not know the sheer level of Republican obstructionism if you're not from here, but they filibustered their rear end off from 2007 to 2012, 380 total filibusters if I remember right. edit: We went six years as a nation with no budget. Their feelings get really hurt when the voters don't vote them in.

Republicans can get laws passed with a near majority, democrats require a super majority + a few to get past the blue dogs. That's the advantage of one party being an authoritarian party and another being a compromise party.

This this this!

When viewing the history one that goes from the 1800s to today please remember that the Republican Party was actually once the more liberal and progressive party. I'm not exactly sure when it started to shift but the poles had definitely majorly realigned pre-FDR. But I do know shift was finished around LBJ's time when all the anti-civil rights Democrats fled to the Republican Party.

If you really wanna help the progressive take over of the DNC make Keith Ellison happen and get out and vote for Democrats in EVERY election. The reason Republicans were able to get this stranglehold is because liberals can't be hosed to vote in local and state elections. We gotta change that.

Helldesk & similar IT peons would probably benefit a lot from unionization but it'll never loving happen for the reasons already discussed itt

Tech companies have gotten really good at getting their workers to work more than they should for less compensation/benefits.

Loving that shift towards hiring contractors instead of actual employees. They don't have to pay benefits and the contractors have significantly less job security. So good. So beautiful.

The shift from awarding workers a set number of paid vacation days a year to allowing them unlimited vacation time. Sounds good but it had the (intended) result of workers taking LESS paid time off because they did not want to be judged by their peers for not working or something.

But they screwed themselves too. Right now getting your diverse multi-disciplined workers to brainstorm with each other is all the rage because innovation good. But the companies are finding the workers reluctant to do so. Managers and senior managers bitching about how different branches won't talk to each other or work together. Assume it's out of elitism or greed, that their workers in Division A think they're better than the workers in Division B. Or that workers just don't want to share the credit/reward, etc. It's actually because the company puts the workers on needle thin deadlines and time spent consulting with/engaging with other branches is time not spent finishing the project on time so they are discouraged from and punished for trying to get other disciplines involved. Way to let your toxic, work to death environment stifle creativity and innovation.
