Hillary took Bernie's economic populist message and threw it in the garbage for "We spoke to a pageant contestant from 20 years ago and she says she isn't voting for you"

The trend of people going "It's not that America's racist, it's that she failed to court midwestern voters" is dumb. Yes, obviously in hindsight she should have done that. A person who called for banning the immigration of Muslim Americans. A person who openly mocked a disabled reporter. A person who showed profound ignorance every time he stepped on a debate stage.

Do you remember how the 47% tape or Dukakis in the tank or Dean's yell are remembered for helping tank their campaigns?

The shock is around the fact that none of that poo poo mattered whatsoever. The shock is around that Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio would have probably done just as well.

And like there are a dozen things you can nitpick about. If those campaign tanking moments actually were campaign tanking moments or the fact that the worst of the Trump presidency is probably going to be based on him being a Republican more than anything else or if people should've known better about who the people in our country are.

But people are shocked because they assumed that people would rise to the occasion or at least not vote for that guy. And that's not what happened. They voted for a guy openly hostile to women and people of color and Muslims. And going "WELL ACTUALLY..." and simply talking about Hilary's failure to assume almost every single poll that showed her strategy was working was wrong doesn't make you some amazing realist. The Democratic Party has become a giant fundraising machine, too often reflecting the goals and values of the moneyed interests. This must change. The election of 2016 has repudiated it. We need a people's party that's ready and able to oppose Donald Trump's Republican party, which is about to take over the three branches of our government, and poses a threat to everything we believe in. warning: long as hell

e: hell, there's even a great example of a rust belt worker with no prospects retraining into green energy just to try and make something of it and then finding no work anywhere near him. there's your loving angle

quote:

So Smith did something risky: Following a longtime obsession with wind turbines, he decided to switch careers and become a wind technician. In 2011, after training at a technical school in Sweetwater, Texas, he quit his job at Accubuilt. Unable to find work in Ohio, he was hired by AES, a Fortune 200 energy company with a large wind farm in Troy, Pennsylvania, about 470 miles away. Within his first year on the job, he says, he'd learned everything there was to know about fixing wind turbines, as well as many basic business skills. He soon advanced to become an environmental coordinator at the facility, handling emergency management plans.

But living so far from home was untenable. He had four kids by different mothers, ranging in age from two to 24. On Friday evenings, after his shift, he'd make the nine-and-a-half-hour trip back to Ohio. He'd arrive on Saturday morning, stay for a day – ''though I used to say it was 36 hours to make myself feel better'' – and then drive back again. ''You want to keep making that good money, but you don't want to leave,'' he says. ''I didn't say ‘bye' a lot of times. You get tired of saying ‘bye.' ''

Sometimes, Smith would drive all the way back to Pennsylvania too depressed to even listen to music. Back at work, he did his job but otherwise kept to himself. Finally, it all got to be too much for him, and he did what he felt he had to do, realizing it was about as financially unwise as anything he'd ever done: He left his job and moved back to Lima to take his chances.

It should be done, but that isn't the only answer.

it doesn't necessary have to be literally factories. there are tons of skilled manual labor jobs that we won't be able to automate effectively for decades, at the very least. Bernie's whole thing was rebuilding the nation's infrastructure, both because it's currently barely functional and because it's something we can employ a lot of people to do. The Tennessee Valley Authority is arguably one of the most successful government stimulus programs ever. Make half a dozen of those covering various impoverished areas of the country, focusing on green energy, and we're all a whole lot better off (and we can put coal in the grave forever).

Illegal immigration is actually bad for workers, because it allows owners to take desperate people and use them as tools to break unions, skirt workplace rights and regulations, and drive down wages. Legal immigrants can be allies and don't allow businesses to do those things if you have a real and meaningful system of worker protection. They also pay taxes and spend money in the economy where they live.

so allow workers to file labor complaints regardless of their residence status and that all goes away, and you still have a hard-working labor class who, as a reminder, commit LESS crimes than native-born citizens (https://www.americanimmigrationcoun...campaign=Buffer) and actually NOTICEABLY REDUCE crime rates in communities that have high numbers of recent immigrants moving in (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10940-013-9210-5)

mrmcd posted:

Another thing we need to point out is that the reason our military got to the size it is and spending on it almost never goes down, is because a large bulk of it is basically just a government jobs program to employ people without much other prospects, either through arms manufacturing or enlistment benefits.

So conservatives already support a massive scale socialist government manufacturing and jobs program, but one that is quite possibly the worst one you could design, because A) Private companies skim almost all the profits for their owners, B) Extra tanks, planes, and bombs that sit unneeded don't provide utility or improve the lives of anyone once they're built. C) Once you start building all this stuff, there's always going to be people on the hunt for an excuse to use it, and that leads to horrible hosed up wars and bad foreign policy decisions.

So let's take a big chunk of what we spend on military now, a big chunk of the taxes the elite aren't paying, and use it to build literally anything else. Provide capital grants to privately managed but 100% worker owned companies, so we can tell people "Not only are we going to give you the money to start a business, factory, startup, or whatever and provide jobs here, any profits will go entirely to the people who work there."

Put that out there, don't run from it, and let the Republicans poo poo all over it and see what happens. Maybe I'm wrong and that pitch goes down in flames but Jesus the safe mealy mouthed middle way version already failed.

i've been saying for years that military enlistment is excellent from a benefits and job training perspective and a similar approach should be given to people sent to work on infrastructure and public works projects instead of sitting on base in the middle east/asia jerking around, and then a few months ago learned about the Civilian Conservation Corps

i like to think that proved me retroactively right and we should just have one of those again

Findings from the analyses suggest that temporal change in overall homicide and drug homicide rates are significantly related to changes in immigration. Specifically, increases in immigration are associated with declining rates for each of the preceding outcome measures. Moreover, for several of the homicide types, findings suggest that the effects of changes in immigration vary across places, with the largest negative associations appearing in cities that had relatively high initial (i.e., 1970) immigration levels.

so immigration usually decreases violent crime in most communities but immigration to segregated neighborhoods (with more immigrants already there) actually have the opposite effect
