i used to get a kick outta calling my racist cousin from Vidor (super racist town in east texas) racial slurs since they made him so mad the n word is the worst thing you can call a white racist person in their mind but you can change it up too by using some classic terms from the 20s

Yeah it's easy to just be Neville Chamberlain or whatever, and because most of your families (mine included) are powerless and ineffective it's fine to do I guess. But it's nothing to be particularly proud of.

NY dems need to get their fuckin' act together, dawg For a democratic stronghold, the parties are hard to get involved with and hold no fuckin' events and are harder to learn things about and from. This complacency is shameful and ridiculous, and a symptom of the long-term and far reaching hollowness of the democratic party. If you don't wanna talk about politics, fine. That's OK. But if you talk about politics, make it matter and do something.

Sure buddy, derision's really gotten us far I live in Erie county. I work with the rural poor in Erie and Cattaraugus county. I used to be an environmental scientist until I couldn't stand seeing all the real and raw suffering the rural poor went through and went back to school to get into a social work program. Dawg we can win over these people. They're desperate for any hope as their towns melt away and the only thing left is broken barns and faded painted advertisements. These places need the help that a party that isn't one of capital can give. Trump won't bring back the steel plants, but we sure as poo poo can put down factories to make wind turbines. Trump can't make things cost what they used to, but we can make them be paid what they should be. There's a core component of desperation and despair that if we just acknowledge and reach out to we can turn it into a willingness to work hard for political change. We just gotta try. The idea that 30 minutes away from a city is just a wasteland isn't just wrong, it's unhelpful to our goals. The people out there aren't rabid racist hicks who supported Trump with all their heart and can't wait to burn mosques. Most of the people out there don't vote, and most of the people who vote don't give much of a goddamn poo poo about it. We can energize them. We're the only ones who can. We just can't rest in our enclaves and pretend they're all useless sub-humans. Grondoth has issued a correction as of 01:57 on Nov 28, 2016 |

I'm sorry if you had a bad experience growing up or if there was a tragic event that made you believe this, but the rural poor aren't horrible monsters just salivating at the chance to shoot a black person. They're people. The most common political idea I see isn't racism or religious intolerance or even ethnocentrism, it's disenfranchisement. Most people don't think politics even fuckin' matters man. They don't vote. They don't care about political parties. They think every politician is a lying crook.

As a very rural liberal I agree we need more outreach and the way Bernie (Peace be upon him) tried to directly appeal to the best interests of these voters was one of my favorite things about his campaign. As a sane person though voting for Donald Trump was an objectively loving stupid thing to do. These morons will be shamed for it, both by us and the inevitable passage of time.

I don't think you understand quite how much despair the working class of this country is in at the moment. Hillary was more of the same, everyone knew that. Anything is better than neoliberalism when you've been destroyed by it, even some kind of wishy washy pseudo fascism.

If this was the reason some people voted for trump I could understand the reasoning. I'd disagree with that reasoning based on everything he's done so far but whatever. The problem is I grew up in Appalachian PA, there are a lot of high school classmates who voted trump on my facebook wall. Based on their own words/posts they were not making some grand last stand against predatory capitalism. They're just really dumb and mean. Its loving depressing. E: I guess my point is these people are middle class and based on their dumb facebook posts look about equally comfortable as me. They're just horribly uniformed/misinformed, not desperate. I know my old peers in PA are not isolated and the sad truth is these are the people who elected Trump. I'm not mad because they didn't vote Hillary. I'm mad because they didn't stay home. old beast lunatic has issued a correction as of 21:13 on Dec 2, 2016 |

Appalachian Pennsylvania, well known for its total lack of working class people. And even the middle classes there are suffering from dying town syndrome. That spite and meanness is an outgrowth of predatory capitalism, friend. They may not know exactly what screwed them, but they know they've been screwed and they're angry about it. Hillary smugly spoke down to them, called them deplorables and told them she was going to put coal mines and miners out of business.
