For an effort post: my pops is a Christian pastor and "Reagan" Conservative, and all that goes along with that. He thought that Hillary was the devil. He thinks that homosexuality is a sin. However, none of that stops my dad from being the kindest, gentlest person I know. He loves and appreciates every gay person he meets, never lectures them or imposed his viewpoints on them. He treats everyone equally. He sat down and had several lunches with an Aryan Neo-nazi and genuinely tried to help the guy, even though my mom is Jewish and in this dude's worldview she was subhuman. My pops is really into the bible, and because of that he would put himself in danger or even lay down his life for a perfect stranger, even if they were the sinniesst "sinner" who had ever sinned.

And yeah, he probably voted for Trump (I haven't asked and I'm not going to). It's not because he's malicious, "deplorable", a nazi, or evil. It's really depressing to me to see on here people vilifying the millions upon millions of people who voted Trump and painting them all with the same brush. That's how we lost, and we'll lose again and again and again if we keep it up. That Neo-nazi I mentioned? I my dad had just screamed, "gently caress you buddy, my wife is Jewish" and socked him, then the guy would have one more reason to hate Jews. Instead, because loving people like my dad and that guy's family reached out, years later he came back into the fold of the Chrisian church and recanted his nazism.

So yeah, happy thanksgiving everybody. Treat you family members who disagree with you with kindness. Forgive them their Trump support, for they know not what they do. Recognize that politics is temporal and fleeting, but that family lasts Ito eternity.

Or jut be a smug little bitch and make everyone hate you.

I live in Erie county. I work with the rural poor in Erie and Cattaraugus county. I used to be an environmental scientist until I couldn't stand seeing all the real and raw suffering the rural poor went through and went back to school to get into a social work program.

Dawg we can win over these people. They're desperate for any hope as their towns melt away and the only thing left is broken barns and faded painted advertisements. These places need the help that a party that isn't one of capital can give. Trump won't bring back the steel plants, but we sure as poo poo can put down factories to make wind turbines. Trump can't make things cost what they used to, but we can make them be paid what they should be. There's a core component of desperation and despair that if we just acknowledge and reach out to we can turn it into a willingness to work hard for political change. We just gotta try.

The idea that 30 minutes away from a city is just a wasteland isn't just wrong, it's unhelpful to our goals. The people out there aren't rabid racist hicks who supported Trump with all their heart and can't wait to burn mosques. Most of the people out there don't vote, and most of the people who vote don't give much of a goddamn poo poo about it. We can energize them. We're the only ones who can. We just can't rest in our enclaves and pretend they're all useless sub-humans.

People out there aren't just waiting for a minority to beat up, man. I'm sorry if you had a bad experience growing up or if there was a tragic event that made you believe this, but the rural poor aren't horrible monsters just salivating at the chance to shoot a black person. They're people. The most common political idea I see isn't racism or religious intolerance or even ethnocentrism, it's disenfranchisement. Most people don't think politics even fuckin' matters man. They don't vote. They don't care about political parties. They think every politician is a lying crook.

If this was the reason some people voted for trump I could understand the reasoning. I'd disagree with that reasoning based on everything he's done so far but whatever. The problem is I grew up in Appalachian PA, there are a lot of high school classmates who voted trump on my facebook wall. Based on their own words/posts they were not making some grand last stand against predatory capitalism. They're just really dumb and mean.

Its loving depressing.

E: I guess my point is these people are middle class and based on their dumb facebook posts look about equally comfortable as me. They're just horribly uniformed/misinformed, not desperate. I know my old peers in PA are not isolated and the sad truth is these are the people who elected Trump. I'm not mad because they didn't vote Hillary. I'm mad because they didn't stay home.

Appalachian Pennsylvania, well known for its total lack of working class people. And even the middle classes there are suffering from dying town syndrome.

That spite and meanness is an outgrowth of predatory capitalism, friend. They may not know exactly what screwed them, but they know they've been screwed and they're angry about it. Hillary smugly spoke down to them, called them deplorables and told them she was going to put coal mines and miners out of business.

hillary the predatory capitalist lost lol. unlike the paternal father-figure coal operators who swindled land owners out of mineral rights, destroyed the environment, poisoned the groundwater, gave generations of men terminal respiratory diseases, multiplied the incidence of cancer exponentially, took billions of dollars offshore without reinvesting to the communities, and declared bankruptcy "due to obummers war on coal" before retiring to their private islands.
