I'd missed that BMJ report. Shame they only published it at a time where we've decided to ignore all experts in favour of what conservative journalists like Boris Johnson & Michael Gove think meaning it'll have absolutely no impact on the idiots in government, and honestly the opposition will likely be falling over themselves to distance themselves from sensible policy on drugs. But at least we can laugh at people on the Labour Party right who'd rather raise money to "fight" fellow Labour Party members than worry about combatting xenophobia, racism & fascism, presumably because idiots like Stephen Kinnock are too busy trying to get Labour's policy on immigrants to line up with UKIPs. Oh, actually that's not particularly funny, is it? It's just crushingly depressing. Somehow the knowledge that I'm right in agreeing with the OP about the failures of neoliberalism aren't particularly comforting in the light of all that. And yeah, 2017 will probably be worse unless all you care about is famous rich people dying. Although at least a few really great records have come out this year so it's not all bad.

I had a moderately sized post typed up that amounted to "No, regardless of whether Scottish independence might have worked before, it'd be suicidal right now" Then I remember that brexit was suicidal. Probably the best guide is to ask yourself what would happen if this was an episode of Black Mirror.

He goes back to sleep, a small smile on his face. The camera pulls back out the window to reveal, in the streets, Lord Farage's Fashbots on patrol, brown paper bags in shiny metal hands, while up the road a group of soldiers wearing the proud emblem of the United States of America and England and Wales apply jumper leads to the testicles of two men, chanting "flay away the gay". The twisted, hateful face of State Senator Tony Blair looks down with a horrible grin from a huge billboard bearing the slogan, "Things can only get better".
