That said, 8th edition also introduced a limited command resource (Command Points) that the game has needed for a long time, and helps smooth out some of those issues by re-rolling bad rolls. They weren't around before 8th, and they aren't currently being used enough in the ruleset that was released, but the current idea is that they'll be adding in faction-specific uses for them. As-is, their more interesting uses tend to be tied to specific missions/scenarios, which is fine.

And a lot of these issues could have been easily solved with alternating unit activations, which GW should have implemented. But baby steps, I guess

Agreed.

I could see that being a potential tournament issue if it weren't written clearly enough.

TheChirurgeon posted:

All well and good for tournaments, but ideally the game you play is balanced enough that knowing the mission and opponent in advance don't guarantee you a victory, especially if the opponent has the same knowledge. No idea how 8th edition 40k is going to fare on that front. Seems much more balanced than 7th, but that is like the lowest possible bar to clear.
Oh, for pick-up games where having specialists needed to accomplish a particular objective are less of a thing (e.g if you're using the "20x20" mission system), it's not even an issue. Infinity balances remarkably well across 7 factions and 12 sub-factions. But the topic was about objectives, so it seemed pertinent to mention.

FYI, cat update. Crash the cat got his jaw wires out yesterday. He's now basically ready for adoption - fully recovered his weight, growing fur in all the places he was wounded or had to be shaved for various procedures, pretty bored of being stuck in a bathroom all day every day, super affectionate and desperate for attention as always, and no longer a gross smelly mess.

He's still an FIV+ cat of course, but he's no longer in any danger of dying and he's definitely going to make someone a great pet. If you know anyone who would take this cat, please PM or email me. I'm in the san francisco bay area and will transport him a modest distance but taking him out of state is not really an option.

Here are a couple pictures of Crash from last week, enjoying head rubs. He has areas of fur above his eyes that were shaved in order to do surgery on his eyelids - they also trimmed his whiskers short - so that's why his face is a bit funny-looking.

On a less cute note, remember how one of the key complaints about Infinity was the sexism implicit in many of its sculpts?

And how poor, poor GW fans were always left behind, what with their company being more interested in the "ew cooties" pre-adolescent market?

Fortunately there are some cool and good third-party vendors ready and willing to help! :)

Busty commissars aside, was actually looking mostly at their SoB range of figures, wish I had backed when I had the chance. Would love a small-ish army of them.

I'm quite fond of their Kurganovas and Iron Empire minis. I'm getting some of the former to make a Shadow War Kill-team, and, maybe, one day, an actual Guard army.

The Jailbirds would make good Catachan/Conscript/I want a pin-up girl armies I guess. Or maybe even Necromunda gangs.

I really want to like their SoB stuff, but I have this thing where I cannot accept SoBs that don't have the Fleur-de-Lys. It's probably my Joan of Arc complex. :v:

I'm getting my hands on some of the Russian SoBs (hopefully tomorrow) and they look like they'll be pretty sweet.

Xarlaxas posted:

The Raging Heroes renders on the TGG2 Kickstarter don't show any, maybe they added some later? I missed the KS. The Grishnak guys in Russia basically have all the SoB markings on them (including the Fleur-de-lys!) which makes me super happy.

It's really weird that the *one* thing that the companies making "not SoB" keep on leaving out is the Fleur-de-lys: it's not like GW can copyright that, unless they want to go to war with France. . . . :v:

Sounds awesome: you must do it.

Also, speaking of Proxies/counts as: https://www.ragingheroes.com/products/kst-red-hammer-command do these gals look too heavily armoured to be regular/veteran Guardsmen? I feel they don't look heavily armoured enough to be Storm-troopers, but are certainly a bit more armoured than a conscript. . . .

Maybe I could use those as Veteran Guardsmen and then https://www.ragingheroes.com/products/kst-peoples-legion-command as "regular" guard, so it's easier to tell them apart in the field.

LeBron and KD are good, but Draymond is a little bitch.

Also, how are people not making more out of Harden basically begging for the MVP every interview for the last half of the season? It seems like Americans genuinely aren't noticing how pathetic it is, if a player behaved like that here they'd be smashed before, during, and after the game by fans, players, and pundits alike, and never win anything.

No, I just saw a bunch of earnest discussion in the 40K thread about the merits of porn figure manufacturers with nary a batted eye, and thought it made an amusing contrast to the amount of hand wringing going on when it's nerd-politically opportune to wring.

No, I think GW themselves are fairly OK for sexism in wargaming miniatures. Largely because of the lack of female representation, but the absence is better than a sufficiently bad presence.

And I do think that absence is because GW have long consciously aimed for a pre-sexual boy audience. The pornographic void that your Raging Heroes and your Kingdom Deaths and yes, to a degree, your Infinities are now pouring into exists because GW left that sweaty western otaku money on the table, when they could easily, easily have gone for it. And that is something I will give them kudos for.

I wasn't even talking about the NBA, but it's good too. The current style of pick and roll, perimeter defense and then crazy 3pt shooting/fast break layups/iso play is really enjoyable to watch.

I think Harden mugs for the awards less than Westbrook did, and either way their level of prima donna-ness still feels way lower than your typical top Euro league striker, so I can live with it. And really, that ego is what leads to NBA stars being petty with each other on Instagram, which is great off-season entertainment.

It can also be that. Context is important. A child wearing their bedsheets on Halloween would probably not object to being called spooky, whereas in that same scenario, if you mistook Jeff Sessions for a kid dressed like a ghost, he would probably be very upset.
