Mantic's Warpath pledges are now filtering down to their backers and tentative readings of the rulebook (for vanilla Warpath and for Warpath: Firefight) point to it being a good game. So it should do for 40k what KoW did for WHFB in terms of filling that niche.

Did GW actually completely stop localizing their product names? I know for 40k and WHFB there were quite a few things that were translated from English into the local market languages -- definitely not everything, but some (here in Germany, a Space Marine Librarian is a Scriptor, or a Dreadnought is a Cybot, and iirc a lot of Tau vehicles were translated). I ask because I just checked the GW website in Germany to see if they actually bothered translating lovely loving names like Bloodsecrators or Bloodbloods or whatever into other languages, and the answer is nope.

Someone was posting in the Mantic thread a week or so ago about their first games of it, and they were very positive. The rulebooks themselves are also super, super well-made (like, physically), if that counts for anything. The fluff itself is pretty decent too, despite some weird editing decisions in the setting sourcebook that was included in the Kickstarter,

Don't confuse Warpath: Firefight with vanilla Warpath though. Vanilla Warpath is a multibased game that seems to have been Ronnie Renton's pet project, while Firefight is the 40k-but-good style game that the fans really screamed about wanting. I haven't seen really anyone at all talking about vanilla, and Firefight has been getting the majority of the attention from consumers (rightly so). This isn't to say vanilla Warpath is bad necessarily, it's just that Firefight is what the market wants.

Casino dice are pretty lovely for anything but casino games because they are designed with hard 90-degree edges that make them bounce far more when thrown down a felt-lined craps table. Throwing casino dice around on your kitchen table is going to give you really lovely randomization and also possibly chip your table.

If you want to have an encounter with the absolute dregs of the geek community, try running an anime tabletop rpg like my friend did at our local university society.

He had to bring deodorant because the stench of some of the players were physically repelling him.

I think this is more a feature of anime groups in general. At my university, the anime club apparently had to rotate its meeting place among the various residence halls because no one hall would tolerate them for very long (because of the smell). Unfortunately my hall leadership decided they'd be the ones who ultimately welcomed them, and declared that the anime club could meet on my floor, in the floor kitchen (which was right across from my doorway).

The smells that came out of there were... strong, and would take a few days to air out. When they met we even took to rolling up a towel and jamming it into the crack of our door to try to keep the smell out.

My roommate invited a friend from anime club over to our apartment one day in university. Our apartment was 3 stories and we had to sit on the 3rd floor while this guy lounged on the first for several hours. We informed the roommate that this friend was never to be invited back. The stench was loving ungodly.

Oh, a good friend of mine had the most anime roommate in first year. We'll call him Harry.

Harry was, at first glance, a pretty nice kid. Kinda short, pudgy but not obese or anything, with long shoulder-length hair that was (at first) well-groomed and washed. After talking with him for a few minutes, you'd get the impression that he was a doted upon and sheltered rich kid, but he wasn't at all an rear end in a top hat about it and was generally pretty humble about his upbringing. He had odd word choice, but that hinted more to his sheltered life than anything else (an inside joke among the rest of us who were the closest things to friends he had was that he would often ask if we wanted to go to dinner in the dining hall, and that he could go a minute or two before the rest of us to "requisition us a table"). Weird, but harmless.

We didn't mind too overmuch, since Harry also was pleasantly introverted and often would smile and tell us no thanks, he didn't want to go out with us that day, he'd rather stay home and play Guilty Gear or something. One of the Chinese exchange students liked to watch people play video games, and apparently did it a lot with Harry. When Harry wasn't gaming, the exchange student would float around to other rooms and watch us. If I was playing Halo at the time, he'd plop down on our couch and demand "you play Harry game, I watch." Guess he didn't care for shooters.

Fast-forward through to the end of the first semester. Both guys in the room (Harry and my friend) weren't exactly the cleanest, but Harry's half of the room was just... ungodly. Piles of trash everywhere (not really any food stuff as far as I can recall, mostly just books/mangas/wads of discarded paper from notes and coursework). I had no idea how he managed to even get to his desk -- until I found out that he at some point had given up trying to wade through the trash to get to his desk, and instead chose to do his work on the top bunk.

The wall beside Harry's bunk was a boogerwall. Despite owning tissues, Harry seemed to have grown a collection of boogers that must have been intentionally placed or wiped on the wall next to his pillow. There were also... strange white specks on the window just next to his bunk.

One night (I think it was during finals week), another friend in my group spotted Harry's laptop unattended and alone in the residence hall's study lounge. As many 19 year olds would do, he thought he'd hop on it and prank him with the old "take a screenshot of the desktop and set it as wallpaper, then hide all the icons" trick. That's when he discovered Harry's folder... of underaged furry porn.

It was the end of the year, but Harry got an intervention. Not just about the porn, but about everything -- the trash heaps, the boogerwall, the white stains. I'm not really sure what became of him after that -- most of us moved out of the dorms after that year, and the group kinda split up around campus. Occasionally we'd see him on campus and make friendly but brief smalltalk, but that's it.

I mention the story because Harry is the reason why the anime club set its crosshairs on our residence hall, as he was its treasurer or something.

RagnarokAngel posted:

I understand some people legit have medical problems that cause them to smell but when you don't shower daily that's like clinical depression level issues.

I think a lot of it is just ignorance, honestly. We had another guy who was otherwise totally normal, except that he literally had no idea that you were supposed to watch your crotch. Had never soaped up down there, ever. Thankfully, he had a somewhat patient and well-groomed roommate who sorta explained to him how showers work.
