Saturday Night Live used to end a bunch of their sketches with a Lambada dance party when they couldn't think of any other way to end them and movies like Caddyshack also ended with dance parties, which is pretty much what that Simpsons episode was referencing since Rodney Dangerfield was in both.

Emma Watson is still really popular, the CGI looks just fine to most people who aren't animation nerds and the original animated Disney film is still so massively popular that people are more than willing to go see an 'updated' version. Also people loved the live action/CGI Jungle Book in 2016 so they've got high expectations for the next Disney live action/CGI adaptation.

Haledjian posted:I don't think it's an unfounded criticism, but it's a little overstated--Pixar has 13 feature films, not counting sequels. Disney has well over 30 2D-animated movies (many of which look super similar to each other) so it's easy to pick out the outliers. The "samey" 3D Disney movies number maybe 6 or 7. So there's going to be plenty of time and opportunity for them to diversify their art direction. The other factor is that Disney is pushing the Disney Princess brand pretty hard so all their new princesses are going to get crammed together with their older characters on merchandise forever and ever so they need to be stylistically compatible with Sleeping Beauty and Snow White and all the rest. Of course the non-Princess movies don't have that excuse ...

For comparison, Star Wars: The Force Awakens' day 4 domestic total was exactly $100 million higher than BatB.

Correction: they just got the BO actuals and it's actually the 6th biggest domestic opening of all time, pushing Iron Man 3 down a rank. It came really close to taking the 5th spot. Of course this means that we'll now get LIVE ACTION DISNEY REMAKES FOR THE REST OF TIME.
