Is there even a difference nowadays? They seem to get the same budgets and put out pretty remarkably similar work (see: the Planes movies, which are garbage but look on-par with WDAS' stuff if not slightly better than some of it).

Like honestly if I'd heard that Frozen was by DisneyToon and Planes was WDAS, I would have 100% believed it. The two studios seem basically indistinguishable beyond what they're put to work on.

You can get away with more in animation. The first Rebuild of Evangelion movie also got a PG-13 and is brutal as gently caress, and even has a quick boob flash in it.

My complaint is more with backgrounds, for example, than female character design in isolation. You can only really tell if a setting is from Frozen or Moana based on what it literally is (e.g. tropical beaches or snow).

Meanwhile, you will not mistake a background from Sleeping Beauty with one from Beauty and the Beast or Home on the Range.

you're also comparing 2D animated movies made across a way longer period of time with CG movies made 2 years apart from each other that probably have a huge proportion of shared animators. comparing Dumbo to Pinocchio would be a little more fair, and you'd find a lot more similarity between those two (for example).

That's... that's a pretty big gap in quality, though. Book of Life was solid, and only really hampered by the live-action stuff, whereas Free Birds was really bad.

e: Also the Ratchet and Clank movie is kinda decent, actually. It's kind of a case where they made the best adaptation they could of the source material, it's just that nobody was asking them to adapt it. I really think that if it had come out as an original IP, instead of being based on a video game, it might have still bombed (because an action-y kids movie is always a gamble, they'd usually rather see the grown-up action movies and in the age of PG-13 they usually can) but it would have probably done a lot better with critics.

So, out of curiosity since the movie came up earlier: has anyone tried to get the uncut version of Land Before Time released, or is it just sitting there in Bluth's vault still?

(For anyone who's not aware, the movie had 11 minutes hacked out of it before release for varying reasons. You can find a breakdown of the edits pretty easily if you look, and while a couple of them are fair enough, the changes to the ending are absolutely bizarre, as are a few of the other excisions earlier in the movie.)

I agree that Imaishi is probably better but I don't think Shinbo is actually a pedo? The Monogatari series is horrible because NisioisiN, the writer of the books, is a huge pedo, but as far as I know everything Shinbo's done without his involvement has been fine (Madoka didn't have any pedo poo poo at all and I don't remember there being any in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei).

And Madoka is almost entirely non-objectionable. Even the "graphic violence" is... literally two short scenes in the entire run, one of which is mostly offscreen and the other of which is in silhouette. I also don't have the first clue what "bondage shot" is in the OP.

e: that said, nobody was putting it forth as especially family-friendly, either; it's a 12 in the UK and that sounds about right. I just sort of take issue with the idea that it's directed by a pedophile, because if anything, it almost seems the polar opposite given how non-sexual of a show it is.

Sort of tangential to the discussion, but... is it just me or is there kind of a weird double standard with anime vs. other media?

Like, the #1 TV show in America is Game of Thrones, which is basically a hair away from being rape porn. And yet I don't see anyone saying we deserve another 9/11 or Pearl Harbor for making a loving bad TV show.

Meanwhile, Your Name having a boob joke in it, despite the movie being innocuous enough to earn a PG rating, makes it completely and utterly irredeemable and evidence that the Japanese are culturally inferior.

Like, does this not strike anyone else as extremely loving weird? Am I the actual weird one here for not being absurdly grossed out whenever something from Japan brushes up against the topic of sex? :psyduck:

I could only watch the first episodes of the new FMA and Hellsing series. Having the characters randomly turn SD and spout stupid jokes just kills any appeal the shows might have. The original shows, rough as they may be, at least stay fairly consistent throughout. It would be like if Ghost in The Shell had the major turn SD randomly to say something wacky - just because the manga did it doesn't mean it works in animation.

I'll give you FMA, but Hellsing is never really incredibly serious even in its "normal" bits; I mean, keep in mind it's a show about John Woo Dracula and a big titty lady with an anti-aircraft gun fighting cyborg Nazi zombies. The OVA has pretty much the perfect tone for the material, and going ultra-serious was an extremely bad call for the TV anime.

it'll either be good, but completely unrecognizable and with an entirely different vibe and sense of humor (a la Teen Titans Go or MST3K) or it'll be straight up incredibly bad and not understand what made the original good at all (a la Samurai Jack or Powerpuff Girls)

What are people's choices for the longest running show that was great the whole time?

if we're just talking animated, Archer's been around a while and has only slightly dipped in quality (and the dips in quality are, in my opinion, made up for by those seasons being fairly experimental and doing rad poo poo with the format).

e: also Samurai Jack s5 was good for 3 episodes and then nosedived off a cliff. those 3 episodes are legitimately fantastic, but as soon as the arc with the Daughters of Aku ends, the show just immediately has no idea what the gently caress to do with itself. it was never meant to have a serialized plotline, having one turbofucks what made the show good to begin with, and it wasn't a particularly good serialized plotline, either.

So I just saw Captain Underpants

Pluses:

- the animation is loving fantastic. like, this movie is worth seeing for the eye candy alone.
- George and Harold are the most adorable kids in recent film history.
- speaking of, the movie is super super ultra gay and completely unapologetic about it.
- Ed Helms is absolutely hilarious as Mr. Krupp and the title character, and clearly had a ton of fun with both roles.

Minuses:

- TOILET HUMOR EVERYWHERE. this would seem obvious, but it's not really the presence of it that's the issue, it's the execution. when the movie's making a joke that isn't based on a bodily function, it's insanely clever; the movie gets some great mileage out of the duality between rear end in a top hat Krupp and dumb, nice giant kid CU, for example. but as soon as toilets or poop or what have you come up:

like the movie honestly thinks that just showing you a toilet or saying "poop" is the same as making an actual joke, and... no, it's not. at all.

- honestly the movie suffers a lot from trying to hit the Standard Kids Movie Beats. there's several plot points that just... feel kind of useless (the whole thing with George and Harold getting separated goes basically nowhere and the movie even pretty much cops to this).

overall I'd say it's worth seeing if you can put up with the toilet humor, but... not perfect, which sucks because it's so loving close.
