That's a bit of a stretch. The actual quote was that the fed will be looking into states which go against federal laws, and that because of the opioid epedemic among white people, they will be cracking down on recreational marijuana (although there was also some mumble mumble about how they totes think it's a legit medical drug). So they're totally for states rights to individually decide to ban trans people from bathrooms, and totally against states' rights when the federal government's administration disagrees.

I was gonna post this in "crazy political poo poo" but I figure someone in here may be able to actually school me on what the awful, awful gun-stealing law Brown passed two years ago was, that some mouthbreather "professional gamer" on facebook posted and then defended by cl;aiming that she was stealing his guns "over two years ago!!!" I looked around for a good 20 minutes and all I could find was some story about a gun shop bitching that they may have to get a background check on people before they can be allowed to handle firearms in a gun store. Internet - educate me! Or am I right and this dude is just a gamergating #MRA trumper who thinks that pewdiepie was edgy and not "actually racist." coyo7e fucked around with this message at 05:17 on Mar 1, 2017 |

I watched a live stream of the 'proud boys' in berkeley today and it was really interesting. White guys with 3' long 2" hardwood dowels and 4x6" flags taped to the dowel, 70 year old white guys in leather vests with straight up pieces of 2x4, white guys wearing motorcycle helmets and plywood shields and utililikilts.. When they backed off behind a concrete wall o stay on the high ground, one white guy with a top-knot pulled a knife (and eventually was escorted to his car).

I've seen a few people passing around a video of Lake Oswego's proud boys rally from yesterday, where one woman is surrounded by a bunch of them and just starts waving the bird.. Generally the people sharing this are saying "this is why you cannot reason with liberals" so that is a thing which happened. In the video though, at least half of the people surrounding the woman seem to also be known white supremacists. Mercury reports that the guy giving the heil hitler sign at the women was actually attempting to pray for and lay hands on her to heal her. https://twitter.com/itsmikebivins/status/838132771943919616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw https://www.flickr.com/photos/bkerensa/sets/72157677526584674 (why the gently caress is there a guy in a coolie hat?) https://medium.com/@bkerensa/lake-oswego-police-let-3-percenters-militia-assault-counter-protestors-96828fb09e88#.l141ywfmy

Yup! I find it funny that some of them couldn't be proven to have been handling weapons..? Wha? They just showed up to fist-bump with all their whitebro friends who brought guns, yeah loving right - I know white guys who like guns, and those dudes would've been lent a firearm or laughed off the property. Also uhh, Ryan? I think? Bundy has been shown to have contradicted himself under sworn testimony according to some other stories I saw today - about whether or not he'd planned to occupy the malheur facility before they just "spontaneously decided" to do so since they just happened to be chilling in eastern oregon in the dead of winter - as one is wont to do when he has a ranch in another state. This included some other testimonies that Bundy made everybody turn off their phones and laptops and leave them outside the room during the planning, "so nobody gets interrupted by ringtones" during the meeting which didn't happen, which didn't happen before the spontaneously decided to show up with guns and flags and MREs. My favorite part was how Bundy claimed that "federal employees were free to come and continue to perform their jobs" while the place was occupied.

It's not as though there are hundreds if not thousands of years of combat training methods from various cultures, which might involve using hands, a stick, or a tazer, or hell even something as innocuous as steel bracelets, against a non-projectile weapon and/or unskilled opponent. I mean when I see ads for police jobs in Eugene (or any related support positions) the standards are generally VERY low, and the pay is, frnakly, pretty damned high for my area. I recall seeing an LCS position which listed pay as 100-125k/yr. I've personally applied to more than a handful of office administrative, dispatcher, and various other positions for law enforcements orgs in lane county and the starting pay for even an unskilled paper filing position is like $21-25+/hr. And there aren't many $7k/month rentals around here. I guess since I had to go to school and graduate and work for five to ten years to get up to close to 25/hr in my old career, it strikes me as inherently bad hiring practises and requirements, when the job also requires you not only dealing with angry "customers" but also requires you to pack a gun and fight with them on occasion.

You don't get to just declare them "resisting arrest" or "behaving menacingly" and summarily take away their freedom or life, and then rely on your union and upper management and co-workers to cover your fuckups and lies.

anthonypants posted:I give up, why isn't it like that in any other industry? Ther are a ton of jobs where people do all kinds of shady and illegal and immoral poo poo, and giving them more money doesn't really change the fact that some of them are gonna be fuckwads.. I mean in HVAC, it takes more training than a cop and you get paid around the same range however, you're also required to keep up certs because if you gently caress up working ona boiler you can LITERALLY destroy a building http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/killed-boiler-explosion-caught-camera-46562554 Priests and HVAC techs are in good "unions" which work to raise their wages and legal protections, and one even provides good lawyers too. But if you're a cop, then you aren't really required to have any oversight except for, basically, your own word and the word of your coworkers. My main point that nobody here seems to want to think about - is that a lot of people are always going to be greedy, or act lovely, no matter how much you give them for their wages. Give a cop 500k/yr? A certain not-insignificant portion of them will just buy an even bigger house and bigger boat and more beer and coke, and then end looming near bankruptcy and getting tempted and possibly acting on poo poo they ought not to be doing. There are a lot of laws against fraud and our president is nominally rich as gently caress, but do you hoenstly feel that giving him more money would make him less likely to overreach his own means and end up stuck in a sticky situation because he saw easy money and went for it? coyo7e fucked around with this message at 07:20 on May 17, 2017 |

Instead of paying police more, the focus on what the police do and why, needs to be dealt with. Instead of giving them better perks and pay, give their departments more funding that's not based on numbers of arrests and tickets but rather based on stuff like the community's opinion of them, actual results in the community, and how many people they help out of crises situations rather than taking out of those situations forcefully and then uprooting their life because of it. I talked with a really authoritarian conservative cop about this stuff for a good long while before and since he kept snidely asking me how I'd improve things, I'd give more funding to the departments as a whole for staffing and outreach, largely including unarmed officers whose primary responsibility is to do stuff like contact people who have warrants and offer them education about their situation, and options on how to peacefully resolve it without being immediately moved from their life. A lot of people with warrants have no idea they have them for instance, and they often have jobs or other responsibilities or difficulties which prevented them from "properly" responding. Since the police current MO for warrants is to bang on or bash in the door while armed and expecting trouble, a lot of people freak out and do stupid poo poo like jump out a window and get shot or charged with additional charges, or barricade themselves in, or attempt to dissuade the officers in a way which causes them to get injured or charged with even more things to ruin their life. If a pair of unarmed folks drove up in a not-cop-car and knocked on someone's door and communicated with the suspect civilly and made it clear that they were not there to immediately arrest them, a lot of people would have the chance to do whatever needs to be done to address their charges without being perp-walked into courtroom, or shot. There needs to be infrastructure in place to deal with non-incarceration-based solutions to a huge number of nonviolent offenses, which can and do pile up on folks and lock them into a vicious cycle which ultimately leads to death, incarceration, and acculturation of the prison/anti-police mindset. When the only time you see a cop coming toward you, you are afraid, that is problem number one. And it'd take a lot to change that for many communities and individuals, but I can't see how it would ultimately be worse than what we currently have going. coyo7e fucked around with this message at 18:11 on May 19, 2017 |
