Mill Village posted:I just finished watching Season 1 of Hidamari Sketch. Its fitting that I watched it after Madoka Magica because they share the same character designer. I didn't realize this until I watched a couple episodes. The well-animated Principal in the first OVA was amusing. Hidamari Sketch is great and Miya is the best. I'm just sad that I can't find the manga anywhere, ever. (Ume Aoki is the character designer for Madoka, but for Hidamari she wrote and drew the whole thing, incidentally.)

Still reading YKK. It feels like I'm really deep into it but I guess I really just passed the halfway mark. Highlights so far: Chapter 60: Maruko tries to goose Kokone and she pulls a gun on her. Don't gently caress with Kokone, man. Chapter 68: A T-6 Texan! That androids can jack into, apparently. It's fascinating, though. Very contemplative. The art isn't that detailed but it's really expressive, good at suggesting motion.

Not to imply it doesn't have its own style, of course. How far in are you? It's been ages since I watched but I really enjoyed the Yuno fever dream episode, which I seem to remember being early in the first season.

Finished YKK. Or I mean, I finished it for now, because I probably ought to go back and look at some of it again later. They call it a "slice of life," and I mean technically it is, but the mood it creates is sort of singular and not what I'd associate with most other manga or anime of that description. I found myself really curious about the world Alpha lives in, but also perfectly happy with the fact that none of it ever gets explained, because that's not what the manga is trying to do. It makes you want to think, and that's good. Best art this side of Yotsuba&, too. Ashinano has an eye for naturalistic poses and sweeping, gestural linework that really sells motion. I guess I'll read his Piper Cub thing next.
