Just buy the one you want, the couple grand difference you might save in 'being frugal' or whatever isn't going to be worth the time you don't have an E9x M3, and having The One You Wanted counts for quite a bit. Like the artist formerly known as meatpimp said, $40k is probably around what you should be expecting to pay.

Also I don't know about Utah, but in California you have to pay sales tax on used cars, so don't forget there'll be a surprise $4k or so bill on top of your purchase price if it's the same there.

When I got mine, the seller and I had decided on a rather reasonable price for what was essentially a brand new car with 16k miles - and shook on it - then as he's rummaging for the paperwork in his kitchen drawers 30 seconds later, he dropped a grand off the price because why not.

I doubt EAG will do that, but - who cares. You'll have the E9x M3 you actually were looking for.

This one specifically gets my heart racing and is everything I was wanting. We do have sales tax to the tune of 6.85%. That would be about three grand, plus there will be insurance and EAG only ships in covered trailers (awesome) and is about $2200.

If the car had less than 50k miles maybe it would be a no brainer. I think that if I play the long game another can pop up and I'll be ready to buy it and spend less than $47k acquiring it.

I've driven the DCT and it truly is a fantastic transmission. Gear changes are lightning fast. I don't think it diminishes from the experience at all.

Better performance, better sound thanks to aggressive downshift rev matching every time - if you want - completely docile if you don't, better mated to the S65's ability to rev through three gears in 4 seconds and back down through five in 3, easier to live with in stop and go commuter traffic, easier to keep both hands on the wheel while doing keerazy M3 poo poo in MDM, gains launch control, and because the manual transmission on these is dull and nondescript and doesn't add as much to this car as it does in other cars with less suited alternatives. That's my guesses, but I may be biased. Driving a manual is considerably more fun in many other case, but just didn't impress me as matching the rest of this car as well as the DCT did when I was buying mine.
This is much more eloquent but basically yes. This.

Keeps the miles off and saves plane ticket/gas/lodging expense. After sleeping on it a few days after talking with him I really do want that car, but still am not ready for his price. So I was posting earlier about the shady Mercedes dealer I had been working with. They are still "fixing" the car, so something tells me the damage was more extensive than they originally said, or they are just loving with me. Haven't officially told them to gently caress off, but I think I found an alternative.

2010 e350 with 68k miles for ~$18k. A bit older and higher mileage than I was originally looking for, but its white(which is the color I really wanted) and is way cheaper than the other one I was looking at. Its not a CPO, but I figure I can pay for a lot of work on the car with the ~$15k I save on the price. Hell, I can pretty much pay for the car with just what VW is giving me for my TDI buyback, after they pay off the remainder of my loan. It also doesn't hurt that my cousin works at the dealer, so I should be able to get a decent deal on the car.

The no warranty part kinda scares me, but not having a car payment(or having a very small one) would be really nice. Any thoughts?

Cars without a car payment run better. Or at least I like to think so. After almost four years of never having a car payment I will never go back. I am not too versed in Mercedes but I will say that if you are going to be piling miles on a car then get one with the lowest mileage you can afford. If you can get one with slightly higher miles at a low price, but will not be putting too many miles on then you won't find yourself upside down in the next few years if you decide to sell. Miles destroy cars values long after initial options installed on a car will. If a higher mileage car then spend the $200 and get a good PPI done. It can give you a good bargaining point too. I was able to negotiate a little bit on this M3 because of the PPI bringing two small things to surface while not a deal breaker for either of us it was good to be completely transparent since I am two states away and buying a car I haven't seen in person.

Random question of the day: What keeps you motivated?

I have my own issues going on, but I realized a while ago I have no goals. I wake up each day wondering why I keep going when there's no point. Yet somehow at the 10% of normal I'm working at, I'm still more productive then my friends. It's just so crippling. I'm not trying to jump on the millennial "I need to do something meaningful bandwagon", but gently caress it sure feels better when I feel like I have a purpose. Right now, I'm just standing in a dimly lit field, wondering why am I here?

Good question. I have had a wildly productive and successful ~5 years or so which are pin pointed by relatively bigger goals and steps that my wife and I have corroborated together which includes:
  • Have a baby (achievement unlocked 7/12)
  • Buy a house (achievement unlocked 6/13)
  • Landscape/finish back yard (built house new) (achievement unlocked 10/14)
  • Bonus stage: second baby! (unlocked 7/14)
  • Finish basement of house! (unlocked 12/15)
  • Buy new family hauler (Unlocked 1/16)
  • Buy the E90 M3 I have been dreaming about for YEARS (Currently in process, will have car in hand later this month!)
  • Bonus stage: Third baby! (coming 6/17)

Regarding the financial aspects of these goals my wife and I have made the decision to never finance a thing outside of our primary home mortgage which is moderate compared to our income so these have been saved for prior to purchase. My motivating factor has really been to be a good provider for my family and be able to give them the kind of life I want. That trickles down into all other aspects of my life. It makes me more motivated at work to do well and to innovate. I also have not been too reserved in pointing it out but I am religiously involved and active and that does give me a greater sense of purpose for me and my family. That might not be popular to say or be but it is part of my core beliefs and values and I sincerely believe the doctrines and principles and do my best to live them out and that over arches everything.
