I'm used to shows that have bad starts before getting good, so I'm still keeping an open mind, but I kind of want to know how much more of this I'm in for... Season 2 episode 16. More accurately it shows glimpses of promise in the episodes listed, it's much improved in the first half of season 2, and the second half of season 2 is when it's really good...but a lot of people never quite gel with its tone (hi) and stick around for the ideas/great episodes.

No seriously how the hell is Patriot like The Young Pope? Like, at all? It's an extremely dark and dry comedy where everything is completely straight except for the fact that it's all loving insane. It's not even remotely going for the same thing as The Young Pope, which had flights of whimsy and caustic humor but wasn't about that at all. Also the first four episodes are just....a near-perfect farce. I'll buy it getting better but those four episodes alone would be worth watching even if the rest went to poo poo.

Surely the TVIV hivemind isn't so narrow as to only be able to come up with nerd shows?! There's not a super prominent analogue I can think of, however. Closest I can think of is Happy Valley, which is brilliant but not really the same (doesn't really get into the twisted sense of guilt for having suffered the abuse which was to my mind the core of JJ's examination).

I haven't watched it yet but I'm a massive sucker for fantastic visuals and artsy direction over fully satisfying storytelling (hello Legion and Utopia) so I'm already assuming I'm gonna be in the latter camp. Also I think you're underestimating the Kings story's interaction with the Fuller effect. Two genius showrunners whose shows never get all the traction they deserve tackling an unfilmable genre work is basically TVIV catnip. All it needs now is a woman to hate and there'll be no stopping the thread from devouring us all.
