just listened to the war nerd interview with the guy who broke iran-contra and its infuriating. the extent to which the nyt, wapo etc went to destroy its own and other reporters careers and have effectively become propaganda outlets for the us government is more hosed up than i even imagined

It seems like an entire generation of journalists internalized the lesson that the media "lost Vietnam" and was a direct cause of the social chaos of the 60's-70's and decided, en mass, to never again criticize or dig too deeply into government affairs.

more like an entire generation of journalists got paid/got to have careers for toeing the party line, and if an editor or bureau stood up for them their sponsors and owners would can them

quote:

Guest: Amal Saad, author & professor

On the 11th anniversary of the pivotal 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war, the War Nerd talks to one of the great scholars on Hezbollah, Amal Saad—author of "Hizbu'llah: Politics and Religion" and professor of political science at the Lebanese University in Beirut. Hezbollah is perhaps the most powerful resistance movement in the world, and it remains a mystery to outsiders in the West. Hezbollah's victory in the 2006 war shocked Israel, the US and the world. We discuss the war, its effect on Lebanon politics, Hezbollah's role in the Syria and how it's helped or hurt them, and the history and politics of Hezbollah

This one is particularly great, but of all the War Nerd episodes this probably left me the most depressed. Parry did fantastic journalism and seemed to just get hosed over at every opportunity...

Parry seems to mark the transition point from oppositional journalism to the US taking control of major news places as propaganda outlets especially re: foreign policy. Pretty funny that the ""liberal"" new york times was taking marching orders from Reagan's government.

this really is the best podcast out there, i just wish they'd fuckin do half free/half paid eps or something to get more exposure.

hell their episodes are three hours long, so they could easily split a recorded ep and put the second half behind the paywall. someone mail dolan my brilliant idea

this was the guy they interviewed btw: http://theselongwars.blogspot.com/?m=1

he seemed pretty critical of the pak military in general but strangely supportive of their actions in tribal and pashtun areas where they comitted a shitload of atrocities, which was odd

they also mentioned the war nerd community or something on the ep where they found cael zha, whats that. a forum or facebook group?

latest war nerd was incredible. the part about the real estate bubble in the mideast in places like dubai hit home because i know people who worked construction there and worked on all these completely pointless fancy modern buildings with like no tenants

i may be wrong but i think the bubble picked up steam again in the last few years despite the 2008 crash, all the fuckin black embezzled money from third world politicians and businessmen seems to love financing construction there.

also funny to hear that the yemen war costs 300 million/day wtf how could that be true or sustainable?

yeah so what was dolan like in the early 90s under thatcher/major? i think volker linked a 2002 essay in a d&d thread that seemed a lil flippant

also i don't hear an accent, so was he just like a boston irish guy or whatever? gotta admit the last year of shows of him saying "ohhh, we have to go from turin to syracuse is haaard" is offputting

They talked about this a bit I think

being a right wing nationalist in the 70s when your hero was Richard Nixon (America's last keynesian president) and you associated liberalism with the foreign and domestic failures of the carter admin was different from being right wing post 83 when the full scale of what living under neoliberalism meant if you weren't rich sunk in. I think that's when both of them went left

Also what 2002 essay? Was he writing as himself or in character as brecher?

this article is a pro click

quote:

Vern Clark, the Navy’s top military officer during much of the Bush era, brought an MBA to the job and pitched his cuts to the force using the jargon of corporate downsizing. Smaller crews were “optimal” crews. Relying on new technologies to do the work sailors once did was described as “capital-for-labor substitutions.”

Promising a “workforce for the 21st century,” Clark’s team tried out new training and staffing ideas, including a decision that officers no longer needed to attend months of classroom training to learn the intricacies of operating billion-dollar warships. Instead, aspiring Surface Warfare Officers, charged with everything from driving ships to launching missiles, could learn mostly at sea with the help of packets of CDs. The program was widely derided by sailors as “SWOS in a Box.”

The efficiencies even included eliminating a requirement for ship captains to post lookouts on both sides of ships, a cut that would later prove crucial when the Fitzgerald’s crew failed to see a fast-closing cargo ship until it was too late.

i love that capitalism is doing to the troops what it did to everyone else

- cuba in angola
- the intelligence takeover of the uk media/guardian
- central african war literature
- whiskey rebellion
