I think the GWS ruck is the biggest woman I've ever seen in person, but she's big like Liz Cambage, low jump and not hugely mobile. Metcalfe has nearly 30cm on her after jumping, and she's got some quality palming skills, certainly the most impressive of the four rucks I've seen so far.

The Marinator is boss though, and Phillips seems to have a huge fitness advantage. She is an Olympian coming off a WNBA season, so it's expected.

Looks like at least 8k here.

I was at the game too :3: Had a great time despite the rain. Great to finally see the team play, you can really tell the difference between athletes from other sports and the rest. Phillips was brilliant in the second half and Randall is a machine. Marinof was brilliant.

I am also officially in love with Sarah Perkins :allears: :swoon:

NTRabbit - you're not wrong about Metcalfe. She literally won every ruck contest except one in the first half, and after half time they were using other rucks a bit. Most of her taps looked to go to advantage too, though it's hard to say for sure since it was pretty fumbly out there.

Hope I can get free enough to go to the Norwood game in a few weeks :)

The first tap of the game was a nice bit of wrist work that went straight into the bread basket of a sprinting Marinator, which set the tone, though she made a bit of a nervy fumble if memory serves and didn't get a clean kick away.

Also, neither ruck girl was as tall as I thought they were, a trick of perspective and standing next to a lot of really short team mates - the GWS ruck is the tallest in the comp, but still shorter than me. Given that most, if not all, of the GSs and GKs in the ANZ championship, and quite a few of the GDs and GAs, are taller than I am, I was expecting the same.

Bit different playing GS and GK in netball though, you don't have to do much movement in those positions and height is a gigantic advantage in netball where the passes are so much more accurate and it's so much more difficult to legally spoil the ball.

Still, 189cm is around 6'3" which is drat tall for a woman. I'm 190cm and I'm pretty sure that puts me at around the 95 percentile for men of my generation in Australia, for women it must be in the top fraction of a percent already.

Metcalfe for the Crows is 185cm I think.

I guess that's better than nothing. Anything that gives the umpire the ability to say "actually a 50 would be loving ridiculous in this instance" and not blow the whistle is an improvement to that abortion of a rule.

Actually it just further highlights how stupid the new rule is. Second ruckman gets there slightly late and suddenly he's not allowed to compete.

It's an idiotic rule. Pretty much any rule that requires players to specify what they're going to do in advance and then not react to what actually happens is a stupid rule.

It'd be like having forwards nominate who is going to fly for the mark.

Yeah, it's a disaster trying to use the same account on multiple devices.

The free Telstra subscription seems to be linked to the phone itself, not the account. Of course it will then offer "free registration" which of course doesn't actually involve any subscription, just the creation of a username itself. As if any service in the history of the internet has charged you money to create a username and then charged you extra to use the service.

Rance is excellent at the role he plays, no question about that. It is a little annoying that Talia has been overlooked the last few years in favour of Rance when Talia is an infinitely better stopper. I know I'm biased, but Talia is the best stopper in the comp bar none and has been for several seasons now. It would be nice if the AA side was actually picked for balance. Still, I get it. Rance is an excellent defender in the same vein as someone like Scarlett, that is, an above average stopper who also has a bunch of other extremely useful assets. Deserves his place in the AA side.

Now, what on earth he's doing as AA captain, on the other hand...

Ryder is exceptional, he was the only real contender for the ruckman spot besides Jacobs in my opinion. Jacobs is a considerably better ruckman, but Ryder has more strings to his bow. That said, I still think Jacobs is underrated as a linkman, especially given the way the Crows play, looking for turnovers and then streaming through the middle. I haven't checked but I bet Jacobs' involvements in scoring chains is huge for a big man.

I genuinely think it's reasonable to say that Ryder is the largest reason that Port went from their lackluster 2016 form to knocking on the top 4 this year.

Gray is an interesting case. He's a lot like Betts in that he will play a handful of games each year where he completely obliterates a side, and also a handful of games each year where he's practically invisible. He probably benefits being in a non-Victorian side, where his invisible games go unnoticed while the highlights packages of his BOG performances end up on every footy show.
