Race of Champions is happening this weekend in Miami. There's no crossover bridge this year, which is weird. IndyCar's Facebook page has some videos and livestreams, which currently has Hinch on his phone interviewing and doing what Hinch does best.

The truck I'm driving at the moment doesn't have power steering. When I hop into a car with working power steering I feel like I'm going to rip the steering wheel off.

You can't possibly expect anyone to drive at the limit when the steering feel and fine control you are accustomed to in a car with working power steering fails on you. They could still drive the car fast, but they're going to lose time.

I heard something about Stadium Super Trucks today that I hadn't before today. I don't know how accurate it is because someone on Reddit mentioned it in passing, but it does make a lot of sense in retrospect.

Remember the first season of SST? When it raced in actual stadiums and did things they way that Mickey Thompson used to do them?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ocW0PE050U

Halfway through that first season, SST abruptly changed course, cancelled events in other stadiums, and stuck to smaller venues and Indycar support races. At the time I had thought the financial expenditure was just too much and Robby put the series into survival mode.

But if a Random Internet Commenter That Seems to Know What He is Talking About is to be believed, what really happened is that Feld, they of Supercross and Monster Jam, saw SST as a threat to their stadium shows and pressured stadiums that had booked SST and Feld events to pick us or them. That was a pretty easy choice, one that screwed Robby and robbed us of a proper revival of stadium truck racing.

I wonder why Feld wouldn't have seen an opportunity with this, as stadium racing pairs splendidly with monster trucks. (Robby had monster trucks in some of his first stadium SST races.) Monster Jam x SST crossover events would have made a killing.

SST as it is now is still fun as hell. But seeing that first season stadium race in San Diego, and now learning that Feld may have done something like this, really makes me sad. Oh, what could have been.

Getting back from the track today after another fun one. It was a lot less crowded for a Saturday than it was in recent years' past. Still tons of people but noticeably obviously less crowded. I'm chalking that up to losing thr Pro-Celeb race, which I imagine was a huge draw for casuals.

I really want to see the replay of the IMSA race, seeing as I slept through the middle hour and missed live most of the crazy stuff at the end.

Getting 24 hours of camera coverage is easy for Daytona, but complete overnight coverage of a place like Le Mans or the Nurburgring is asking a lot. It's not a matter of if they could do it, but whether or not it's worth it to do. They don't think it's worth it.

And if you don't like their coverage, stop watching!

I'm still amazed at the general attitude around deaths in the TT or moto road racing in general. It's tragic through and through, but it's always the same line from the family and loved ones. "He died doing what he loved." And the race goes on, almost as if it has to.

I guess it's just the general sensibility about personal responsibility in extreme sport. The TT is one of the most dangerous events in the world, with almost two deaths per year on the average. The simple thing to do would be to ban the race, but they just carry on with it under the guise that individuals in the race know the risks and must be prepared to face the ultimate consequences.

Codemasters games have long been really fun racing games. Not so good as driving games, but they always knew how to replicate the sensation of battling against/forcing your way through a field full of cars. Newer games are starting to nail the driving experience, though.

The new LMP1 regs are a double edged sword: 1. for the consumer, it's great when that trickles down, 2. the makers may not like them and pull out.

I like them, but yeah... I hope Toyota and Porsche stick around.

It's pretty risky when you have just the two P1 manufacturers in on new regulations. If the ACO solicited no input from manufacturers with a potential interest in coming on board in the next five years, then the new regs may have just as well completely deterred someone new from coming in. Plus, corporate interests may shift and a Le Mans program might all of a sudden not exist anymore. Audi was one of the big players, until suddenly it wasn't. Imagine if that had happened if it was only one of two LMP1 programs.

But yeah, there's the other side to it. I remember a lot of worries that the current P1 regulations were ridiculous, but here we are some years later and a hybrid has just crushed the outright Le Mans track record, chicanes be damned. Just goes to show the amazing things that can be achieved when you present engineers with a set of restrictions and basically dare them that they can't go fast within them.

IMSA is going to be insane next year.

I'd have to think this also would help accelerate the impending irrelevance of LMP1. Joest was a proven P1 team, and now they're not available to be picked up by a potential interested P1 manufacturer. It doesn't seem like Joest would "settle" for a DPi campaign unless to them, it's not really settling at all.

WindyMan

If Porsche is out of LMP1, that only leaves Toyota in the HY class. They're not going to stick around if there's no competition. Joest is right about that.

But this is exactly what I was saying earlier. If Joest sees the writing on the wall in LMP1, then it's only a question of when everyone else does at this point.
