I had so much hope for Daigo at the end of 2, then he spent 3 in a coma, in 4 he was a bad guy somehow (aren't the yakuza supposed to steal money???), and in 5 he just ditched everyone for baseball reasons.

That's not true at all. The market in Japan has shrunk so much that they can't ignore the rest of the world. For years Japanese games were coming out on PS4 only for the West because no one in Japan owned the things until persona 5 came out.
