i don't really have any more polite ways to explain this. you know why Dem politicians are scared of targeting campaigns to young left-wing voters? because you dumbfucks consistently gently caress them over by not showing up to vote while the old racist grandpas watching fox news do nothing but vote vote vote every election for the worst assholes imaginable, and if you can't count on some goodwill support from your base you have to move to the center. it's not a grand conspiracy, it's not "some game theory". it's basic logic. and it never loving ends bc every 8 years its another cohort of college kids who think they know better just as the last one finally learned their lesson.

in 2000, holier-than-thou "Green Party" dipshits voted a protest vote in a swing state and got us 8 years of a torturing warmonger texas oilman instead of the candidate who is now famous for his environmental advocacy

in 2010, after 2 years of unprecedented legislative accomplishments, including crucial government stimulus spending, new financial regulations and a new CFPB, and the ACA, which is the largest new government entitlement program in 70 years, the young left-wing voters that elected obama sat out the midterm elections like they always loving do, grinding all progress to a halt, handing the House to the loving tea party, for 6 goddamned years of nothing but spending cuts and debt limit bullshit. the political narrative became that Dems lost bc they pushed a left-wing agenda down Americans' throats, which is bullshit, but after sticking their neck out and getting hosed, yeah, you tend to be a bit of a pussy about pushing a bold agenda again. we were 1 loving vote in the senate away from single payer in the form of a public option. joe lieberman was the holdout, and he wasn't even a loving democrat by then, he supported mccain. one of the 60 senate votes for healthcare loving dropped dead before the final vote and the dem base once again slept through the special election and let him be replaced by a shithead GOPer, in loving massachusetts of all places. and the dems still found a way to push things through. don't talk to me about what the majority of Dems support like you know poo poo.

hillary clinton is a lovely candidate? sure, that's how the upstart obama beat her in the 2008 primaries. so what's bernie's excuse?
bernie's the most popular national politician you say? he has yet to match the 2012 favorability ratings of...hillary clinton. funny how a slogging campaign and a bunch of ratfuck dirty tricks can do that. bernie hasn't been tested like that. you think trump would've played nice with the socialist?

we want the same ends. if you prove you can consistently show up, organize, and win some national elections, i guarantee Dem politicians will fall over themselves championing single payer for your votes.

look at all of these words i wont read

You can think trump emboldening the alt right into self owning themselves out of existence is a net good for society and still think he's a bad president without exploding

He's right insofar as the right wing was getting ready for another 4 years of chud rebellion and we probably wouldve had an actually competent fascist win in 2020

dnd, I've watched it happen in the climate change thread, the energy thread, the rwm thread, &c. Something is broken in these people's brains that they are not willing to take an imperfect solution to solve a huge problem now then improve upon said solution continuously.

what you're talking about is actual incrementalism, which is good

the suck zone version of incrementalism is immediately starting at a compromise (either out of bad faith or refusing to use the bully pulpit) and compromising again and again until almost nothing happens

the second version has been used pretty consistently by the business wings of both parties to stave off any populist policy. an unintended consequence of this is the gradual erosion of belief in "the process" to the point that the entire government is the enemy to the common man, but i guess that doesn't matter too much when you're retired on your whore island (paid for by corporate donations to your campaign) at that point

I don't think its quite the same because a lot of it is big stuff. Like corporate speech restrictions, breaking up blatant monopolies, removing the anti-union bits of taft-hartley, changing the tax code, &c.

When I think incrementalism I think :smugdon: promising his supporters wages will go up while signing a bill increasing minimum wage to 15$/hour in the year 2055.

Good incrementalism would be the CRA (iirc it was initially just making it easier for PoCs to vote and then had its scope continually expanded)

Bad incrementalism would be Obamacare (your base wants single payer, but you start at the compromise of a public option, which gets cut immediately to make the insurance lobby happy)

The point I'm trying to make is incrementalism towards a goal is good, but incrementalism AS a goal is very very bad

this is a good chart to summarize why the old guard elected democrats are so reluctant to champion single payer and higher minimum wage-- it's not corruption, it's fear born of decades of republican rule. factor in all the ways young and minority voters get disenfranchised and have lower turnout in general, and it's not that hard to understand the continued hesitancy. some consistent wins by younger progressive candidates would do wonders for bringing the rest around IMO

is "they're not corrupt, they're totally spineless and put party politics over country" supposed to make me feel better?

edit: if we need to beat some of them with progressive candidates anyways, why don't we just get rid of all of them? sounds like keeping a bunch of spineless centrists around who apparently buckle at the slightest amount of resistance is bad for fights that will happen when said progressive candidates start pushing for anti-corporate policy

The headline makes them sound like dumby dumb dumbs, but if you actually read the article there aren't any jobs in the area hiring for what the federal government wants to train these ex-miners to do, so from their standpoint they are acting rationally because it actually is a waste of time. If you want to give these miners shiny new non-polluting jobs then you have to actually give them shiny new non-polluting jobs, not just put them in training while they starve waiting for someone else to eventually decide that there are enough economic incentives to open a tech company in Buttfuck County WV someday, maybe.

FDR understood this poo poo. If he wanted to employ people to build dams, he didn't sign everyone up for a dam building training class and then just hope some company would come along before they all starved and say "hey look at all these people who know how to build dams, might as well." If he wanted to employ people to electrify rural areas, he didn't just teach them how to be electricians and hope someone came along and said "oh I guess I'll invest in rural electrification" etc etc

its almost like these retraining classes are bullshit and everyone knows it :thunk:
