I'm all for bolt guns, if you do go the Remington route make sure it's the modded trigger group and not the one currently under recall.

Coworker sent in his two years ago for trigger replacement, and still doesn't have it back.

Seconding Savage. I have a Model 10 FP in .308

Spend extra money on good glass though.

Glock's are great, everyone has parts/holsters for them. Honestly a G19 is probably the best pistol out there. I'm not familiar with SW semi-autos, so I'll defer to others. However their pre-lock revolvers are phenomenal.

LMT also makes a decent mid-range AR platform.

What's it like getting a C&R license? It's only $30 and the form seemed fairly straightforward, since I can skip all the stuff relevant only to an FFL.

Its relatively simple, fill out the form, make sure the sheriff or chief where you live get a copy.

When I first applied for mine, my hometown pd called asking if I was conducting business, and some security related questions related to storage.

chitoryu12 posted:

Is there a hard and fast format for records? Like do you need scanned copies of receipts, or will a spreadsheet with serial numbers do?

To be honest a simple excel file would work, I found a pdf log page online a couple of years ago. I slip those into documents protectors and keep them in a three ring binder in my safe. I have a back up excel file saved in a couple of spots as well.

Check the CR thread in TFR or hit up Cyrano4747 with other questions. I still occasionally hit him up for clarification on things.

I just found out, with the way that IL law works, the process that I'd have to go through for an SBR would allow me to travel into other states with it unrestricted (read: without waiting for permission from the ATF). Because in order to own an SBR in IL I'd need a C&R license (03 FFL).

This absolutely led to the ATF originally thinking that IL only allowed C&R rifles to be SBR'd until IL legislators were forced to clarify.

Might as well start the process, though, because my dumb rear end wants an SBR'd ARX-100.

Wait what?
