Cops literally infiltrated the meetings of anti-war Quakers and the SEIU within the past ten years.

There's not much you can do to stop it at open meetings, it's just something you keep in mind.

So is Haymarket books trying to affiliate itself with the DSA since the ISO dissolved? What used to be the big ISO conference is now advertising itself as a Jacobin/DSA thing. I think both endorsed last year but weren't given top billing.

I've got no stake in this, I'm just sort of confused and curious.

ok, looking in from the outside it's wild to me that different DSA caucuses have different resources and email lists separate from the org as a whole

I assume this sprung up as a consequence of the membership boom post-2016? was there ever any debate about it, or did it just develop this way haphazardly?

I'm reading about the Jakarta Method right now, and it feels like being on social media at all for leftists is a dumb idea. Social media is basically just surveillance technology that's been privatized and redirected towards advertising. A lot of the work by anti-communist forces historically has been creating and maintaining lists of suspected communists, and now communists openly declare themselves on platforms owned by US contractors.

For all the valid problems about Amber Frost she had a really good article about this

I think people in leftist organization really need to have a deep discussion about how useful social media actually is. In it's present form it is the most extreme form of social alienation possible, and Internet Leftist types probably cause much more harm than any help.

Frost is good when she's done the research and isn't using edgy statements to keep the reader's attention. I like the ending to this especially.

quote:

Any information or activity more complicated and less disposable than a hashtag will eventually require stable institutions that can grow, build, and recruit in real space and real time. These institutions do not resemble the tyrannically structureless and voluntarist cattle calls of whatever fleeting online mob has made the rounds this week. Any use of the internet for movement-building should be considered with the ultimate goal of social media’s obsolescence, and its supplantation by unions, parties, and political organizations.

Activism must return to the traditional strategies of organizing and institution-building that have demonstrated a true record of success. This work will not move quickly, and most of it won’t be cinematic or produce a flurry of media attention, online or off. Most important, it cannot rely on the very platforms over which we have the least amount of control. Some seem to think that social media will act as the proverbial capitalist that sells us its own hanging rope — and this does have some small truth in it, to the degree it can be used as a bulletin board for promoting real-life events, but such organizing is the most flimsy and minor outreach. A desperate activist tweets. An aspiring activist uses Facebook. A fledgling organizer emails. An established organizer has phone numbers. A successful organizer is offered addresses.

Not a whole lot of Chicago knows what "Treatment not Trauma" concretely is supposed to be, and no one outside of Chicago knows the slogan. Maybe explain it?

Having an alderperson who isn't a literal puppet of developers in Uptown again is nice to see at the minimum.

The district council system Chicago just implemented is the bastard child of two trends: the movement for community control of police that has been pushed by activists since the Panthers, and another attempt by technocrats to rebrand "community policing" and widen the pool of police collaborators.

It's going to be something to watch it play out.

Some of the newly elected police council members from the West side are pushing for the former chief of counterterrorism to be the new head of CPD. I saw Driver, the head of the group searching for a new CPD head, get called racist for implying that Black residents and elected officials can't advocate for CPD officers they want to see in the top job.

quote:

“This is not a political campaign, so it’s not a popularity contest,” Driver told the Sun-Times.

“We’re looking for the person to do the job, so community members’ voices are very important and their voice will be at the forefront,” he added. “But if somebody has 5,000 supporters and another person has 20 [and] the person with 20 seems way more qualified, then that’ll create an issue.”

An online petition endorsing Ernest Cato III — the Chicago Police Department’s former chief of counterterrorism and a finalist in the last superintendent search — has already drawn more than 700 signatures.

The drive was launched by Alees Edwards, who was recently elected to the new Police District Council for the Harrison District, which is charged with helping nominate members to the commission.

DSA isn't really in the drivers seat around this stuff, the Chicago left has plenty of other people to blame/praise for how this played out.

At its pre-pandemic peak there was certainly a major contingent of creepy guys who legitimately thought "it's ok, im just being sex positive" was a good excuse for hitting on every woman in the org.

One of the people I'd hang out with at DSA events was this woman who worked as a stripper. The only reason I learned she was a stripper was because I was having a conversation with her and some other guy recognized her, proceeded to identify the club she worked at, and started to ask questions about her schedule to go there and see her.

isn't that what swp stands for?

asking a SWP member if it stands for "sex worker positive" would be a great joke, but most SWP members are so old they might die from shock
