What are is the Democratic Socialists of America?

From their website.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International. DSA's members are building progressive movements for social change while establishing an openly democratic socialist presence in American communities and politics.

At the root of our socialism is a profound commitment to democracy, as means and end. As we are unlikely to see an immediate end to capitalism tomorrow, DSA fights for reforms today that will weaken the power of corporations and increase the power of working people. For example, we support reforms that:

decrease the influence of money in politics

empower ordinary people in workplaces and the economy

restructure gender and cultural relationships to be more equitable.

We are activists committed to democracy as not simply one of our political values but our means of restructuring society. Our vision is of a society in which people have a real voice in the choices and relationships that affect the entirety of our lives. We call this vision democratic socialism — a vision of a more free, democratic and humane society.

In this web site you can find out about DSA, its politics, structure and program. DSA's political perspective is called Where We Stand. It says, in part,

We are socialists because we reject an international economic order sustained by private profit, alienated labor, race and gender discrimination, environmental destruction, and brutality and violence in defense of the status quo.

We are socialists because we share a vision of a humane international social order based both on democratic planning and market mechanisms to achieve equitable distribution of resources, meaningful work, a healthy environment, sustainable growth, gender and racial equality, and non-oppressive relationships.

DSA has a youth section, Young Democratic Socialists (YDS). Made up of students from colleges and high schools, the Youth Section works on economic justice and democracy and prison justice projects. It is a member of the International Union of Socialist Youth, an affiliate of the Socialist International. The Youth Section meets several times during the year.

The DSA has chapters all over the country, chances are there's one in your state, if there isn't one near you though, starting your own chapter isn't very hard.
To find a chapter:
http://www.dsausa.org/chapters

To start a chapter:
http://www.dsausa.org/start_a_chapter

Also if you're going to start a chapter download and read this;

http://www.dsausa.org/organizing_for_justice

Also read that anyway because it's a great guide for organizing in general.

The DSA has yearly dues, which can be seen here:

As you can see, it's pretty affordable for once a year, the dues are necessary because the DSA is completely funded by membership/dues, people who can't afford the dues are still welcome to attend meetings and volunteer with the cause, they're just not dues paying members of the DSA, although from what I've personally heard usually chapter heads will work with people who can't afford the $27 low income due.

To become a member of the DSA go here;
https://dsausa.nationbuilder.com/join

So what does the DSA actually do?
DSA chapters do a lot of local stuff, like a DSA chapter in my state is working on improving the treatment of the homeless in the major city, and stopping/reversing the illegality of being homeless. The national DSA also does campaigns, for example they supported Bernie Sanders during the democratic primary, and they also have a current campaign, from their website;

DSA and YDS chapters organize around a variety of issues based on local priorities, especially labor solidarity and anti-austerity work. However, the national office provides resources and support for the main activist priorities of the organization:

Standing Up to Hate Emergency Response

In response to the anti-Mexican, anti-black, anti-Muslim, anti-refugee anti-woman and general hate-mongering coming from Donald Trump and the way he is creating space for racist extremists to mobilize, DSA local chapters are reaching out to immigrant rights organizations, mosques and others who may be targets for violence. We are mobilizing to spread the message that hate only creates more hate, and we will continue to resist him and what he represents. Longer term, DSA chapters will work to build a multi-racial democratic socialist movement that is forthrightly anti-racist and includes white poor and working class and rural folks.

Feel free to use this thread to ask questions about the DSA, talk about the DSA, post sick DSA memes, discuss organizing efforts/progress etc.
Please do not use this thread to hate on the DSA, or be a big baby with a poopy diaper.

In honor of the budding revolution I would like to remind everyone that you can only build a mass organization with an actual infrastructure

the good news is that the internet provides a basically cost free way of getting it done if literally the most minimum of effort is taken

I have taken that minimal effort to a new height and now provide you a list of tools you can use to set up virtual soviets in the heart of this rotting land ruled by an orange madman

1.) Set up your own functioning social network/website

Use this: https://developers.oxwall.com/

it's free. The hosting is dirt cheap and anyone can set it up.

You can easily merge all the social channels into it and mirror other allied channels (other DSA chapters, Robert Reich etc.)

The idea is to have a clearing house of information for organization

see the events of other chapters

2.) Instead of fighting about who is a tankie, make decisions with every DSA chapter using this collab tool

https://www.loomio.org

it integrates with slack

3.) March on something or meet somewhere using this private map GPS app

http://www.waveapplication.com/

Then talk using signal + Whatapp

if you want to create groups or customize stuff you can probably also try this advocacy progressive tool https://www.salsalabs.com or these dudes

https://actionnetwork.org/toolset but it costs more Trumpbucks

There it is: your resource to creating a virtual soviet/committee of correspondence

I hope someone takes the 30 minutes it takes to get this documented and set up.

Cheers!

What do the different membership tiers mean?

Like there's an Introductory one on the site but not in the OP, what's up with that one.

The introductory rate is for new members, the one in the OP is from my screenshotting and cropping the renewal price chart, the diff membership tiers don't mean anything, they're just different rates depending on what you can afford. Obviously the student rate is for students, low income rate for low income indv., etc. But AFAIK there's no verification process or anything.

Im an anarcho syndaclist but I know that the US will never directly transition from capitalism to anarcho syndaclist, so for me, and a lot of DSA members, the DSA is about taking direct action to counter capitalism and fight for workers and the impoverished, which unless you're accelerationist seems like the best action to take in our current govt/society.

The DSA is getting really overwhelmed from massive amounts of people joining, I talked to someone at a DSA social event who order buttons shortly after christmas and still hasn't gotten them. If you talk to your chapter chair or whoever they can call the national office and have them expedite or w.e., especially if its for a new chapter.

Is there a good way to see if there's enough membership in one's area to justify a local chapter? I imagine Chicago is really feeling the stress since the HoI is a DSA desert right now.

I think if you live near a university you have enough people to form a chapter, once you have a chapter formed you connect with other groups in your state and other activist groups in your local area. Advertise on social media, do flyering, host events, etc.

I live in an insanely red district and am trying to start a chapter, I have enough for an OC, but I'm trying to get the person who has the facebook to give me access so I can make an event, unfortunately the owner of the page hasn't responded and I msgd them like 4 days ago. Thinking about just making a second page and planning an event to kickstart growing it.
