not saying this is true in her case specifically, cause I dont know, but this is one major criticism I have of the DSA and yalls approach to elections. theres really no mechanism for holding "dsa candidates" to a specific platform or party line. like you can withdraw endorsements or support, but thats no different than what every union and other interest group can do. the candidates arent elected as dsa members who are accountable to the dsa membership to hold specific positions. as a result, the politics of a dsa endorsed candidate can look completely different in different places. because of this, ocasio-cortez isn't really a DSA candidate, at least in the sense that she is just as much a justice democrats candidate or a brand new congress candidate. yes shes a member, but its not like she represents the DSA as a congress person, it wasnt the DSA that decided to run her for that seat she chose to run as an individual and prolly safe to say would have run whether she was endorsed or had the support of the DSA or not.

taking an approach where the DSA ran fewer candidates and were stingier with endorsements but it meant the candidates were accountable to the orgs membership or valued the endorsements much more would I think lead to better organization and more influence for yall. I know I'm being critical right now, not trying to rain on the parade and generally its a very positive thing that she was elected, but I really do believe what I mentioned would be a better approach. I think taking that approach might mean slower growth in membership and a little less national attention in the short term, but I think would be a lot more meaningful and lead to a much stronger working class movement long term.
