Weeping Wound posted:sheesh, with the outpouring support for DSA, should I just do that instead of PSL? They also seem to be more of a bottom up org with a lot of emphasis on local chapters doing their thing, while PSL and Socialist Alternative (SA/SAlt) are more top down. Everyone is welcome in the progressive left, and most of the fight over the next 4 years will probably be 1) opposing trump and 2) pushing the general dialogue left (both national discussion and individual congress people).

Its important to step beck and acknowledge that there are a lot of awful people out there, and they tend to become more awful when empowered by the anonymity of the internet. This is true of every org and movement anywhere, ever.

I was unaware but apparently we have monthly new member orientation conference calls. The link is on the DSA website - might be helpful to new members.

There is zero reason for any meeting to last more than an hour, outside of potluck/socializing time. If its more than an hour, you are not including enough things on handouts or in email. Its already asking a lot for people to spend part of their precious Saturday at a political meeting - if you don't make it worth their while, they will never come back.

Is it a bad sign that Ocasio-Cortez didn't mention NYDSA at all in her shout out tweet thread? Or am I reading too much into this? https://twitter.com/Ocasio2018/status/1012373932874362880

Tyrannosoros posted:She's got them on her bio so but yeah maybe she was a cop all along? apropos to nothing posted:not saying this is true in her case specifically, cause I dont know, but this is one major criticism I have of the DSA and yalls approach to elections. theres really no mechanism for holding "dsa candidates" to a specific platform or party line. like you can withdraw endorsements or support, but thats no different than what every union and other interest group can do. the candidates arent elected as dsa members who are accountable to the dsa membership to hold specific positions. as a result, the politics of a dsa endorsed candidate can look completely different in different places. because of this, ocasio-cortez isn't really a DSA candidate, at least in the sense that she is just as much a justice democrats candidate or a brand new congress candidate. yes shes a member, but its not like she represents the DSA as a congress person, it wasnt the DSA that decided to run her for that seat she chose to run as an individual and prolly safe to say would have run whether she was endorsed or had the support of the DSA or not.
