The labour party remains bad and poo poo, surprising no-one. Well, no-one it seems, apart from the few who think that a change of captain will somehow plug the holes in the hull of a sinking ship -- that ship having hit an iceberg. Thinking "anyone but Corbyn" can save the labour party at this stage is as daft as it turned out believing in Corbyn himself was in the first place. Some things you just can't foresee. With the best will in the world, it's a weird loving time for Corbyn's labour to start worrying about what the press thinks after weathering a long and co-ordinated campaign of negative media coverage from every conceivable direction. Labour need to actually set out a concrete agenda and decide what they're all about, rather than spending all their time on the defensive, slowly withering under the onslaught of a hostile press.

At a certain point the opinion expressed reflects badly on the person holding it and has nothing to do with the MP in question.

Focus grouping is all about finding the lowest common denominator to appeal to. People are often fundamentally poo poo and advertising and PR is all about exploiting that to best effect. If you got rid of every arsehole in the room the exercise itself would be pointless.

jfc who even decided byelections were these massively significant make-or-break moments in the first place? At best, like polls they're a barometer of prevailing public opinion which could well be completely different at the next GE. The whole press narrative about labour seems to hold them to an entirely arbitrary standard and level of scrutiny that no other political party nationwide is held to.

Goldsmith losing was a big deal. The prospect of Labour losing is arguably a bigger deal because the opposition should not lose byelections

I understand the concept well enough, I just don't subscribe to the idea that they are in fact as important as they're made out. Or rather, if they are important indicators of future electoral failure or success it's much more due to the media narrative constructed around them rather than facts on the ground.

Sure. It's still mostly inside baseball though, and the much-anticipated UKIP-led upset against labour has failed to materialise in pretty much every other byelection that's been covered to date. I don't disagree that byelections play a role I just don't subscribe to the idea that they're as decisive or important as they're made out.

This isn't getting excuses in early, it's plain labour's in trouble and they're probably gonna get hosed in the next GE. If they win this next byelection or lose it, it's not gonna augur the result further down the line.

Do you see the contradiction here?

Not really, since you're putting words into my mouth. Labour is screwed by more factors than just the makeup of the PLP and my gripe wasn't about byelections taking place, just the undue emphasis placed on them as predictors of labour's future electoral success. There wasn't really even an argument couched in my complaint so much as I was expressing boredom and frustration with the endless harping about how each byelection is so pivotally important that a labour loss indicates the end of labour as an electorally viable party or whatever bullshit the commentariat's trotting out this time. They desperately want a working-class UKIP surge and a shift away from traditional labour support to be a thing and that's the narrative they're going for, no matter how many times it fails to happen.

Jeza posted:

Well, it's simple. Democracy and tyranny are natural enemies. You can't become a true despot without first dismantling the democratic structure. Unelected dictators are far, far more common than elected ones, so it's just a game of probability. If you're elected democratically, the odds of you going full dictator historically are a lot less than if you just busted into high office on the back of a military coup.

I don't entirely agree with this. The US is a democracy by most metrics and yet the power of the state is hugely centralised and controls a vast repressive apparatus (along with a bloated military) that can be directed almost at will against anybody arbitrarily considered an enemy of state. For Trump (or any of his predecessors) to be a tyrant he doesn't really have to do much in the way of dismantling and America's done a great job of terrorising the world and many of its own citizens since World War 2 while maintaining itself as the very model of a modern liberal democracy.

I guess what I'm trying to say in my typically rambling and unfocused way is that I worry that by fixating on Trump the person or the idea that unelected dictators are qualitatively different, we end up individualising a systemic problem. The problem being that liberal democracy is just a veneer of respectability, a rubber stamp of manufactured consent for a killing machine every bit as brutal and repressive and unaccountable as the worst of tinpot dictatorships.
